WASHINGTON — Congress is defying President Donald Trump on removing Confederate symbolism from the military.The Senate on Thursday joined the House in approving legislation that would rename bases like Fort Bragg and Fort Benning that are named for Confederate officers.The Senate vote was an overwhelming 86-14 vote. Earlier this week, the House passed the measure with a 295-125 vote.The Senate passage opens the door for the Senate and House Armed Services Committees to open negotiations for a final version of the bill. Once that bill is passed, it would head to Trump's desk.Even if Trump were to veto the bill, Thursday's vote indicates that Congress could override it and make the bill a law.Trump has said he favors that military bases keep the names of Confederate military leaders, despite efforts from Pentagon officials to change the name. Walmart employees could soon be getting a little more wiggle room in their work attire.The discount giant is testing a new dress code that would allow workers to wear any solid colored shirt and adds blue to the mix of approved pants colors, making blue jeans work-appropriate attire, a spokesperson said."We are always testing new ideas and concepts in a small number of our stores," spokesperson Justin Rushing said in an emailed statement "Some of these tests are expanded while others are retired. We won't know next steps on this test until we've had a chance to learn what works and what could work better."The news was reported earlier by Bloomberg. The site reported about two dozen Walmart locations will test the new clothing policy.Walmart employees at stores not included in the pilot will have to continue to abide by the old dress code, which bans blue jeans and stipulates khaki or black pants with a solid white or blue top.One new dress rule, however, will be nationwide: Beginning April 14, new hires cannot have visible face tattoos, according to CBS News.With 4,900 US stores, Walmart is the country's largest employer. Walmart says they plan to pay their workers in the United States a holiday cash bonus.In a press release, the company announced an estimated 8 million in special cash bonuses on Dec. 24, which comes out to be 0 for full-time employees and 0 for part-time workers.Drivers, coaches, and assistant managers will also receive a special cash bonus, Walmart said in a press release.The company paid employees 9 million in quarterly bonuses on Nov. 25, "following a strong third-quarter business performance."According to Walmart, it has paid a total of more than .8 billion in bonuses in 2020.Walmart also announced they are extending its leave policy through July 5, 2021, amid the ongoing pandemic.The policy currently provides "associates with up to two weeks of pay should they need to stay home for COVID-related reasons, including mandated quarantines, symptoms, or illness."The company said employees unable to return to work after that time would receive additional pay replacement for up to 26 weeks. 1025

Walmart will roll out a new website next month.The nation's largest retailer announced Tuesday that its redesigned site will offer more personalization, include more vibrant colors and a cleaner design, and feature "relatable photography that showcases real-life moments."The homepage will include a new section that showcases top-selling items in a customer's location. It will also offer specialty shopping experiences, such as the Lord & Taylor flagship online store which is launching this spring. That partnership was first announced last fall.Walmart has become one of the major platforms for online sales. It's taken aim at Amazon by offering free shipping without a membership fee for most purchases of or more. Online has become the fast growing part of Walmart's business, with the company forecasting 40% growth in those sales this year. Voters in Maine are trying out a new election system this year.“It is going to be used this fall for the first time in the presidential race, and that was a focus of a series of court challenges that went back and forth up though just a few weeks ago before it was finally determined, yes it will be used in the presidential race,” said Mark Brewer, Professor of Political Science at the University of Maine.What is ranked-choice voting? And how does it differ from how you fill out the more traditional “choose one,” or plurality, ballot design?“Normally you'll have a grid of candidates, all the candidate names on the left side and all of your choice columns along the top,” said Chris Hughes with the Ranked Choice Voting Resource Center. “Once we get everybody's ballots in, you count up all the first choices. If anyone has the majority, they get 50% of all those first choices, then that person is the winner.”However, if no candidate gets 50%, “you eliminate whoever has the fewest first choices and count the second choices on those ballots instead,” Hughes said.Ranked-choice voting has already been used for some local elections in states like California.“The big surge we’ve seen in the last 20 years started in San Francisco. San Francisco adopted ranked-choice voting in 2002 to eliminate their run off elections. Now they have a single general election,” Hughes said. “The last 20 years we’ve seen this huge growth, even between 2016 and 2020 we’ve seen five more cities adopt ranked-choice voting.”Why is Maine making the change now, in the brink of a critical presidential race? It’s a decision that was made four years ago. In 2016, the Ranked Choice Voting Act was passed by Maine voters, which meant ranked-choice voting would be used in certain statewide elections going forward.However, with every type of voting -- and there are many methods -- there are pros and cons.“In simpler elections ranked choice voting is probably going to do a decent job. But in more complicated elections where there are a bunch of candidates and it’s a tight race you run more of a risk of anomalies occurring,” said Aaron Hamlin with The Center for Election Science.What does this voting method mean for Maine, and the U.S. as a whole this election?“Ranked choice is going to come into play in the United States Senate race here in Maine,” Brewer said.“It’s not inconceivable that the Maine Senate race ends up deciding control of the U.S. Senate, and we're not going to know the outcome of the Maine Senate rate on election night. I can't imagine we will.
