As a jazz musician who’s traveled the world with some of the best-known artists in the industry, your first assumption might be that Daryl Davis’ claim to fame is from being on stage. But the African American racial justice activist is better known for the work he’s done over the years helping Ku Klux Klan members leave behind a life of racism and white supremacy. It started back in the early 1990s when Davis arranged a meeting with a former wizard of the KKK. At the time, he did not know Davis was Black.Over the years, the two forged an unlikely relationship with one another. Davis would regularly be invited to Klan rallies across the country. He didn’t agree with their message, but he wasn’t there to join the Klan, he was there to help persuade members’ opinions on race.“You have ignorance and if you don’t cure that ignorance, that turns into fear because we fear things we don’t understand and if you don’t turn that fear, it escalates to hatred, because we hate the things that frighten us,” the 64-year-old explained.Having spent decades with members of the KKK, Davis doesn’t argue or even get frustrated with those he meets. Instead, Davis tries to plant a seed that he nurtures and helps grow over time. That seed, he says, is breaking down barriers that exist between KKK members and African Americans. As Davis spends time getting to known Klan members, he says that over time, many start to see him for more than the color of his skin, they see him as human.“If you have cancer in the bone, you can’t rub topical cream on top, you have to drill to the bone and put chemo or radiation to the source. And that’s what we have to do with racism. Go to the source, which is ignorance. It’s not inherited, it’s a learned behavior,” he said.To date, Davis has helped more than 200 Klan members leave the white supremacist group. Many send Davis their robes after they abandon the KKK. But Davis is quick to note that he never convinces anyone to leave.“I didn’t convert anybody, but I am the impetus for over 200 people to convert themselves. I planted the seed so they could come to the conclusion that, ‘I might need to be rethinking what I’m thinking,’” he added. As for the current state of racial unrest gripping the country, Davis sees this as a moment of reckoning where real institutional change on racism is possible.“We have never had this many white people join in our cause. This is a major change. We are turning another page in the history of this country and we have not turned a page in a long time,” said Davis. 2549

As children return to school, security experts want parents to add one more thing to their yearly checklist – safeguarding their child's identity.Monday is Child Identity Theft Awareness Day.“This is a huge problem that frankly no one is aware of if they're not paying attention to it, because it feels like an adult crime and it couldn't possibly happen to a child, but it does,” said Eva Velasquez, President and CEO of Identity Theft Resource Center.Recent studies show over 1 million children are impacted each year, with losses over .6 billion. This year, new government programs for COVID-19 relief have created new vulnerabilities.Children are prime targets because thieves can use their credentials to build credit history over time, then take out loans, open credit cards and max them out.It can take months or even years for parents to realize their kids now have bad credit.“The detection methods adults use just by engaging in the outside world, those aren't there for children and the thieves realize that and they know it can go undetected for long periods of time,” said Velasquez. The center says it's never too early to start monitoring your child's identity.Teach them cyber safety as they get older and watch for red flags. If you get something in the mail for your kid that looks like it should be for adult, don't write it off as a mistake. The biggest recommendation is to freeze your child's credit. It won't solve everything, but it will significantly lower risks. 1494

ARLINGTON, Texas — The World Series has drawn a record-low audience of television viewers for the second straight night. Tampa Bay’s 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 was seen by an average of 8,950,000 viewers on Fox. Los Angeles’ opening 8-3 victory in Game 1 was seen by an average of 9,195,000 viewers on Fox. The low for any game before this year came the only other time the Rays were in the World Series, when Game 3 against Philadelphia in 2008 was viewed by 9,836,000.The World Series ratings are consistent with a drop in ratings across all live sports in 2020, though live sports remain among the most-watched events on television. 664

Another nationwide retailer is filing for bankruptcy amidst the pandemic.Stein Mart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protections Wednesday, citing the current situation in retail during the coronavirus pandemic.“The combined effects of a challenging retail environment coupled with the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have caused significant financial distress on our business,” said Hunt Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer of Stein Mart, Inc. in a statement from the company. “The Company lacks sufficient liquidity to continue operating in the ordinary course of business. I would like to thank all of our employees for their dedication and support.”Stein Mart says they expect to close most, if not all, of their 281 stores and they have launched a “store closing and liquidation process.” The first store opened in 1908 in Mississippi. The discount department store says they are looking at possibly selling their website and intellectual property during the Chapter 11 process.Stein Mart adds to the list of several retailer who have announced bankruptcy filings or closings, including Tuesday Morning, JCPenney, Sur La Table, Mens Warehouse, Ann Taylor and Lord & Taylor. 1199

Ananya Vinay, the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, has had quite a year.It started with confetti cannons on stage after she spelled "marocain" correctly. Then she made the rounds: talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and other media appearances. She rode in a limo to the Golden State Warriors' final basketball game of last season, and got to see the trophy presentation when her team won the championship."It was really exciting," she said. She also toured the Google campus, got a rally at her school and had a day named in her honor by the governor of California. It was all a big surprise, she said. And she's picked up other hobbies, too: she made it to the National Science Bowl, the state science fair and competed in Mathcounts. She also wants to write more and join the forensics team. And she's started a website and tutors some spellers.A lot of it comes from her Bee experience."It really gives you a lot of confidence," Ananya said. "It gives you a lot of knowledge about the world."Ananya carried the trophy in to the opening ceremony Monday night and kicked off the Bee."I'm really glad to be back; I have a lot of friends here," she said. "I'm hoping for the best for every competitor." 1216
