It said, “Congratulations Amy Coney Barrett on becoming the 5th woman appointed to the Supreme Court since its inception in 1789.” The post featured an image of Barrett, who was confirmed Monday and sworn in at the court on Tuesday; along with currently serving justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor; former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor; and Barrett’s predecessor, the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.The post was quickly attacked by critics who view Barrett, a conservative, as a potential threat to civil liberties and women’s rights.“What kind of patch does one earn for uplifting a woman who is the antithesis of justice?” tweeted U.S. Rep. A new report through the Brookings Institute found that COVID-19 is the third leading cause of death for Black Americans.A former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention agrees with that.The Brookings report looks deeper at disparities. It says the mortality rate for Black Americans is more than twice that for Asian or white Americans.“So, only cancer and heart disease will kill more African Americans this year,” said Trevon Logan, a professor of economics at The Ohio State University. “So, things like stroke, diabetes, all of those are taking a back seat to the coronavirus.”Logan is one of the authors of the report, which finds the impact of the pandemic has disproportionately hit Black Americans in terms of health and money.Some of the contributing problems are a lack of access to care, more dense housing making it easier to be exposed to the virus, African Americans are more likely to be front line workers, and they’re more likely to be in low-wage jobs that have led to high levels of unemployment.“We were devasted in the last great recession and were only beginning to come out of that tunnel, that dark tunnel, in the last year,” said Logan. “So, these setbacks that are experienced by the African American community both in terms of health and economically are simply a different, or a magnitude that they are for the population overall.”Logan says the pandemic has exposed the lack of a safety net to get us through times of crisis. A massive redevelopment plan that would add a hotel and convention center to Chula Vista's bayfront cleared its last major hurdle Tuesday. The Port of San Diego board of directors unanimously approved the plan, which would add a 1,600 room hotel a 400,000 square-foot convention center along the shores of Bayside Park. The project has been in the works for more than a decade, but developer RIDA can now pull permits for the .1 billion project. "It's transformational," said port commissioner Ann Moore, noting the project would add retail, restaurants, park space and create 7,000 permanent jobs. "The revenues that this project generates will actually be used to pay for the project."Chula Vista residents at Bayside Park expressed concern Tuesday that the traffic would be overwhelming. "I think that Chula Vista is already kind of crowded so I don't know if that's the best thing to have people coming into the city," said resident Sherry Hunter. Ed Conroy, who walks in the park daily, said he expected an onslaught of traffic but that the extra crowds could benefit local businesses."It looks like they're growing," he said. "It's going to be a lot of mass transit, it's going to be a lot of traffic, it's going to be, I guess, for the good of the city."Moore said the project would make a number of infrastructure improvements, including adding shuttles and extending H Street to the water.
