Sears has won some more time to save itself. But not a lot more time.At a bankruptcy court hearing Thursday, Judge Robert Drain approved Sears' plan to auction off about 500 stores. The auction is central to the company's mission to remain in business. Sears intends to use funds from the sale for its operations, and it will pay rent to the stores' buyers so they can stay open.A committee of Sears' creditors had objected to the plan and argued that the company should immediately start the process of going out of business to limit its ongoing losses.Judge Drain said he will hold another hearing a week before Christmas to consider whether to go ahead with Sears' effort to stay in business or start the process to close all its remaining stores. Drain said it wasn't realistic to start a liquidation process immediately."You can't do a GOB [going out of business] plan for a company this big by snapping your fingers," he said. "Let's come back to court [in December] and see what the lay of the land is."Sears' attorneys conceded was a chance the company might not be able to survive."We recognize we have a tough path ahead of us to save the company," said Sears attorney Ray Schrock. "We're not blind to that fact."Schrock said the upcoming holiday shopping season is a crucial period for Sears, and the company believes it will at least be able to break even in the fourth quarter. The creditors' attorney expressed doubts that the company will be able to stay in business. But he said they could live with waiting until December for a decision on Sears' future.Sears also disclosed in a filing late Wednesday that it has arranged for an additional 0 million loan to fund operations during the bankruptcy process. That loan is a crucial component of the company's ability to stay in business, according to a filing the company made on the first day of the bankruptcy process, but it has taken a month to lock-up the funding. The loan is from Great American Capital Partners, rather than ESL, the hedge fund controlled by Sears Chairman Eddie Lampert. When Sears first filed for bankruptcy, it said that it anticipated the loan would come from ESL, but creditors have objected to a the series of insider deals between Sears and Lampert. 2303

Schools in the U.K. are removing analog clocks from exam rooms after students complained about not being able to read the time, according to The Telegraph.Malcom Trobe, deputy general secretary at the Association of School and College Leaders, says students are accustomed to using digital devices today."They are used to seeing a digital representation of time on their phone, on their computer," Trobe told The Telegraph. "Nearly everything they've got is digital so youngsters are just exposed to time being given digitally everywhere."Teachers are concerned about students stressing out during exams because they can't keep track of time. One educator said her high schoolers are only able to tell the time on devices with digital displays, which they can't use during exams, according to People. Many teachers turned to Twitter to share their experience and found that issues with analog clocks is a common trend. 935
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Starbucks is the latest company to say it will pause social media ads after a campaign led by civil rights organizations called for an ad boycott of Facebook, saying it doesn’t do enough to stop racist and violent content.Starbucks says its actions were not part of the “#StopHateforProfit” campaign, but that it is pausing its social ads while talking with civil rights organizations and its media partners about how to stop hate speech online.“We believe in bringing communities together, both in person and online, and we stand against hate speech,” the company said in a statement Sunday. “We believe more must be done to create welcoming and inclusive online communities, and we believe both business leaders and policy makers need to come together to affect real change.”The coffee chain joined a growing group of companies saying they'll pause ads on Facebook or social media more broadly, including Unilever, the European consumer-goods giant; Coca-Cola; Verizon and dozens of smaller companies. 1029
Searching for a new job is stressful, but you are not alone. On average, people change their job 12 times in their career. However, experts say as you get older, it can be harder to do.Getting back into the game late in life is rough, but companies are now offering “returnships” programs, which are basically internships for older workers who took a few years off from work. It’s a great way to get back into the action, but before you go applying for one, you should first start with making sure your resume is up to date."Resumes are incredibly important, because they are your calling card when you haven't met your employer yet,” says career expert Vicki Salemi, with Monster Jobs. “This is your first impression that you are making." Salemi, who works often with people in their 50s and 60s, says there are a few do's and don'ts you'll want to fix. "First and for most, typos can jump out at you; it's a game over before it began." If you have over 20 years under your career belt, you can skip details from the early days. "The further you go along in your career, the less college information you can have," suggests Salemi. Salemi recommends keeping your resume shorter than two pages, use Times New Roman font, don't use a photo and don’t include your address on your resume. Once you update you resume and start applying, remember, landing a new job or returnship doesn't happen overnight. "Keep the faith and keep searching,” says Salemi. “Do not give up; just because one door may close doesn't mean it's the end of your search." 1633
