SAN DIEGO — Football icon Drew Brees gave a Temecula, California teenager the gift of a lifetime this week.The New Orleans Saints QB surprised Alex Ruiz at a Del Mar flag football event with a prosthetic leg."Surprise," Brees yelled into a microphone.Ruiz suffered a severe leg injury while playing football in October 2017. The quarterback at Linfield Christian School in Temecula was rolling out of the pocket when he was tackled and injured. The injury forced an amputation of Ruiz's foot.Brees presented the teen with a walking prosthetic Friday."If there's anything above cloud nine that's where I'm at right now," Ruiz said, all smiles after Brees asked him what he planned to do first with his new prosthetic.Brees added that once Ruiz gets the hang of it, he'll receive an athletic prosthetic as well with which to begin athletic training. But that didn't stop the two quarterbacks from sharing a quick pass."It's going to allow him to walk around, get around, and then eventually get to the point where he's able to play football again," Brees said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- With the rainy season ahead, the City of San Diego is offering ways for residents to save money on their water bills by removing lawns and installing rain barrels. The City is offering .25 per square foot for lawns that are converted to turf that can capture rainfall for reuse. Homeowners that convert their lawn into drought resistant landscape can apply for financial rebates.Customers may receive  per gallon of barrel storage capacity for residential rainwater collecting up to 400 gallons or 0 per property. Rain barrels are a great way to conserve water and reuse for irrigation purposes as well as preventing pollution, according to city officials. Applications are available for Rainwater Harvest, to apply click here. For more information on the types of rebates and water conservation tips visit the City's website. 949

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- It was a battle over workers rights at a rally downtown Thursday. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez directly addressing the group against her proposed Assembly Bill. Assembly Bill 5 would affect any independent contractor including Uber and Lyft drivers, yoga teachers even hairdressers. The group at Thursday’s rally was made up mostly of adult entertainers. “I’ve been doing fine I like the freedom to educate myself and if someone’s going to stop me from that I want to do something about that and voice my opinion," one woman told 10News. The bill would make many independent contractors full time employees, forcing employers to provide overtime, health care and sick leave. Assemblywoman Gonzalez rebutted the group today. "There’s nothing in the law that says an employee has to work from 9 to 6. Any employer can tell you to work two hours, one hour, any hours you choose. There’s nothing in the law that says an employer can’t be flexible.”Some say they don’t want it because they prefer the flexibility and freedom to decide hours that comes with independent contracting. 1104

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In the latest call to re-name racially charged brands and logos, nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition urging Trader Joe's to stop labeling its international food products with ethnic-sounding names.The petition says labeling Chinese, Mexican or Italian food under the labels “Trader Ming's,” “Trader Jose,” or “Trader Giotto's” is racist because it exoticizes other cultures.Petitioners argue the names perpetuate harmful stereotypes."The Trader Joe’s branding is racist because it exoticizes other cultures - it presents 'Joe' as the default 'normal' and the other characters falling outside of it - they are 'Arabian Joe,' 'Trader José,' and 'Trader Joe San.'"In response, the grocery store chain said it decided several years ago to use only the Trader Joe’s name on its products and has been in the process of updating the ethnic-sounding labels.The company said it will soon complete the work. 941

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – When college students were forced out of dorms, some without family or a permanent home didn’t have anywhere to go.Young people who are too old for the foster care system have been some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. Researchers with the Field Center for Children’s Policy found they've been severely impacted by the unemployment, education disruption, homelessness, and food insecurity brought on by the pandemic.“Once I turned 21, because I emancipated from foster care, there weren’t any housing resources for me available. It was kind of, you’re on your own," said Jackie Robles. During the shutdown, Robles was transitioning into graduate school at UCLA.“There was a lot of confusion with dorms shutting down, sororities and fraternities pretty much dismantled. And then also on-campus jobs and part-time jobs, those were all being laid off or non-existent," said Gianna Mulkay.Mulkay is Executive Director of Together We Rise, a nonprofit dedicated to helping foster children. When COVID-19 hit, they moved quickly to support former foster youth in college, calling on volunteers to open their homes, working with hotels to secure rooms, and even purchasing RVs for students.“Before you know it, we were serving 1,200 students, with not just longer-term housing, but making sure they had meal assistance, making sure they stayed enrolled," said Mulkay. Through the rapid response effort, Robles received money for food and rent before landing in a housing program for the homeless.“We’re very nervous about the continued close-downs and what that means for housing for foster youth," said Mulkay. It’s a system that was already in crisis, Mulkay says, noting some of the dismal statistics.Among them: 80% of the prison population has experienced the foster care system, 70% of foster youth go homeless within 18 months of aging out of the system, and 70% of young women in the foster care system will become pregnant by age 21. Mulkay says there's also a huge disparity in education, only 50% of foster youth graduate high school, and just 3% graduate college.“Foster community is hit, and it’s hit hard. We don’t think it will ever be the same again," said Mulkay. But the rapid response effort is showing results; 100% of students who received help re-enrolled for college this fall. They now have funding to provide this critical lifeline to youth in 14 states.“This is definitely way more direct, way more in the trenches of discovering the real issues," said Mulkay.
