SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California corrections officials say they arrested 110 sex offender parolees during an annual Halloween sweep designed to keep the offenders from contacting children or engaging in other Halloween activities. That's about 9 percent of the 1,252 parolees contacted statewide Wednesday.Officials said Thursday that eight parolees face new charges while the rest allegedly violated conditions of their parole.Thirty offenders were found with pornography, including two with child porn. Thirty-one had narcotics, drug paraphernalia or violated other parole conditions. Thirteen were found with weapons. It's the 25th year for the Halloween sweeps dubbed "Operation Boo."Officials say hundreds of parole agents and local law enforcement officers participated in the crackdown involving searches and compliance checks on sex offender parolees. 869

RICHMOND, Va. -- Pinterest is one of the top social media platforms for swapping recipes and home ideas. It can also be another way to share information about your health."With its largely female user base, Pinterest represents an opportunity for spreading credible information and communicating about health, especially women's health issues such as breast cancer, breast cancer prevention, and screening," said Carrie A. Miller, Ph.D., M.P.H., a postdoctoral fellow at the Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine Massey Cancer Center and Department of Health Behavior and Policy.Miller led the Pinterest research study looking at how breast cancer information is communicated on the social media platform.VCU researchers analyzed a sample of 500 Pinterest posts which are referred to as pins. They were collected using Pinterest keywords such as breast cancer."We focused specifically on who posted the pin, the type of visual and textual information included in the pins as well as how users engaged with those pins. Whether those posts were repinned or saved or commented on," Miller said. The research found the posts were mostly text rather than posts of several pictures. Roughly 20 percent seem to come from everyday people."Individuals, Pinterest users just like you or me were posting. Often times, personal narratives, stories about breast cancer, their personal experience with the disease," Miller said.Dr. Miller says these posts can be used to empower the reader and encourage healthcare organizations to join the conversation. She also says if you have specific questions, always have a discussion with your doctor.Miller and her team are working on other social media studies. One study will look at genetic testing on Pinterest. A third study will examine triple-negative breast cancer on Instagram. This story was originally reported by Reba Hollingsworth at WTVR. 1902

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California judge has thrown out a 2016 state law allowing the terminally ill to end their lives, ruling it was unconstitutionally approved by the Legislature.Lawyers for advocates and opponents say Riverside County Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia did not rule on the legality of physician-assisted death. He issued an oral ruling Tuesday saying lawmakers acted illegally in passing the law during a special session devoted to other topics.Ottolia kept the law in place and gave the state attorney general five days to appeal.RELATED:  579

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Trump administration cancelled nearly billion in federal money for California's high-speed rail project Thursday, further throwing into question the future of the ambitious plan to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Federal Railroad Administration's announcement it would not give California the money came several months after sniping between President Donald Trump and Gov. Gavin Newsom over the project. The administration will still try to force California to return another .5 billion that has already been spent.Trump had seized on Newsom's remarks in February that the project as planned would cost too much and take too long. Newsom has shifted the project's immediate focus to a 171-mile line in the state's Central Valley, but he said he's still committed to building the full line.Still, federal officials said California has repeatedly failed to make "reasonable progress" and "abandoned its original vision."Newsom declared the action "illegal and a direct assault on California" and said the state would go to court to keep the money."This is California's money, appropriated by Congress, and we will vigorously defend it in court," he said in an emailed statement.Voters first approved about billion in bond funds for the project in 2008. It has faced repeated cost overruns and delays since. It's now projected to cost more than billion and be finished by 2033.The 9 million the state is losing is critical to the chronically under-funded project. 1524

Retailers and logistics experts say, like everything else in 2020, this year's holiday shopping season will be like no other. You can expect delays, out of stock items and missed deadlines.David Bolotsky is the founder and CEO of the online retailer Uncommon Goods, which connects independent artists, designers and makers with customers. The Brooklyn-based company was at the epicenter of the pandemic and had to shut down for three months. Then, when everyone started shopping again, they did well. Now, they, and many other businesses, are encouraging people to get started on their shopping. No need to wait for Black Friday. In fact, they're warning people to start before Thanksgiving. Like now.“Demand has been strong and a friend of mine calls it ‘Shipaggedon,' concern about what’s going to happen in the transportation network,” says Bolotsky, who also says the supply chain will be limited. “What I think it means for shoppers is if you see something you want, I would buy it now; stick it under the tree.”Kirsten Newbold-Knipp, chief growth office at Convey, a technology company that helps retailers with on time deliveries said, “All the delivery trucks are out and they are busy, you may not have heard of it but there’s sort of a shortage going on right now. They’re having a capacity crunch, not enough drivers, not enough trucks not enough warehouses right now, because of all the things the pandemic has done. We’ve started shopping online more and more and no one anticipated it.”Logistics and shipping are her expertise.“We help them think about what are the trucks doing what are the packages doing what’s happening with on time delivery what kind of damage is happening so they can give consumers the best delivery experience- holidays or not,” Newbold-Knipp said. This year, holiday gifts will undergo a true supply and demand issue, magnified by a pandemic and already backfilled orders. Add in staffing made difficult by things like social distancing and we've got problems.“The other thing that consumers don’t think about is that the actual warehouse space to be able to fulfill orders is limited. They might not have the inventory so fulfillment times are delaying, the pick and pack piece is taking longer and the trucking piece is taking longer,” said Newbold-Knipp.She said consumers need to think ahead, have a backup plan, look for alternatives, use multiple retailers, shop locally, and sign up for text alerts."Only 5% are signing up for SMS alerts, but by regulation the retailer can’t spam you. They’re only allowed to send you a transactional note via text,” Newbold-Knipp said. She also said things that tend to sell out are the items that don't have much variation, such as televisions, toys and specific electronics.“If we see the kind of growth at Christmas that we’ve seen the last few months, we could be looking at 50% growth over last year in terms of online demand,” BolotskyHe recommends having Santa come early, and hide those items until the big day. 3006
