ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - Six months after the West Fire ripped through Alpine, residents still have an immense amount of work to do to rebuild.Colin Campbell's parents owned the Campbell Creek Ranch for 13 years before it burned in July. Campbell spoke with 10News in August at a benefit that raised at least ,000 for the victims of the fire.Sunday, on the six month anniversary of the fire, Campbell walked through the ranch, lending a window into his memories.Surrounding him, the ranch lay much the same as the day after the fire. Ashes and bricks covering the foundation of his parent's home, the pool drained, the white fence lining the driveway, melted. As he looked around him, he saw the ghost of what had been.He looked at the pool, and spoke of an old pact he made with his two sons, "at any time, on the coldest day of the year, I would plunge into the pool, and they always took it upon me to do it, and their timing was impeccable," he said laughing. His sons and wife would jump in after him.At the house, his fondest memory was of a train set his parents built for his boys. He described the wooden track built at knee height, right in front of the vast fireplace to ensure the kids were warm while playing happily for hours, "we spoiled them with trains."Over the past six months, volunteers and family members sifted through soot, unearthing treasures."Man it absolutely has been meaningful," Campbell said poignantly, "in fact there has been a picture of my wife, our wedding 23 years ago, that somehow, someway came out of the rubble."He was also struck by the signs of hope sprouting around the grounds, "you can see now it is greening up, in the mountainsides, they are growing back, and it's just incredible that the environment, they just reinvigorate themselves." He said the boys are young teens now and learning, while cleaning up the ranch, how nature prevails.Campbell's fight to protect the property is not over. "The erosion is our main concern," he said. With help from local leaders, sand bags held the weak soil mostly in place after recent rain.Campbell said he's incredibly thankful for the continued support of the community, and hopes in the next two years to rebuild and move his parents back onto the ranch. 2256

Along with the ornaments and strands of lights, two police officers in the 4th precinct of Minneapolis' Police Department added some unusual items to their lobby's Christmas tree: A collection of street trash, including packs of Newport cigarettes, a crumpled bag of Takis chips, a cup from a Popeyes fried chicken outlet, a can of Steel Reserve malt liquor and some yellow crime scene tape. Critics say the items chosen play on negative stereotypes about African-Americans."These pieces of trash were deliberately chosen to represent how certain officers feel about the community they serve: that Black people are a stereotype to be mocked and the lives of those they serve may as well be reduced to trash in the gutter," City Councilman Phillipe Cunningham said on Facebook. The department has since placed the officers on leave and has launched an internal investigation amid an outcry that the decorations mocked the precinct's predominantly black neighborhoods. The precinct commander also was demoted, according to the Star-Tribune.Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the tree "racist" and "despicable." On Friday, he vowed the officers responsible would be fired."Shifting the culture of the police department requires swift and decisive action," he said. Airports are finding new ways to make traveling safe for passengers during the COVID-19 pandemic. From mask requirements to high-tech cleaning solutions and physical distancing campaigns, they want travelers to feel safe the next time they fly. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is testing technology that could detect the virus long before a person boards their plane. They're running a 12-week pilot program with three thermal imaging cameras aimed at detecting elevated temperatures in passengers. Justin Erbacci is the CEO of Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA), the governing body for LAX and Van Nuys Airports. He says LAX is the first airport to test this kind of technology at a terminal entrance. "Certainly, as we ramp up, we have to have a process that allows passengers just to flow in," said Erbacci. Erbacci says the aviation industry has never experienced a crisis of this magnitude."The closest that I experienced was 9/11, of course. And that was a terrible, terrible time. But it was a much shorter period, and the impacts were not as severe. Now, we are in a situation where the impacts are significantly greater and the duration is much longer," said Erbacci. Medical staff monitors the thermal imaging cameras, looking for passengers with a fever of 100.4 or higher. If an elevated temperature is detected, the passenger is asked to take a voluntary second screening with a thermometer, to validate the accuracy of the thermal cameras. If a passenger is confirmed to have a fever, they're given information about the risk but are not turned away. However, they could face another screening by their airline, which has the final say on whether they fly.Medical assistant Genevie Guillen says passengers have so far been fully cooperative."Everyone is a bit scared, so I think they'd rather take precautions than take the chance of flying," said Guillen. Only deployed for a week, the screenings have not yet detected anyone with a fever, but there have been a few false positives. The airport is hoping more time and data will provide a clearer picture of the camera's accuracy. Critics of the technology say even if it's accurate, it can't spot asymptomatic passengers. And some people who show other symptoms never get a fever at all. From February 24 to April 21, the CDC screened approximately 268,000 returning travelers, discovering only 14 COVID-19 cases."These temperature checks are not meant to be the single solution that it is going to make everybody safe. It's just one layer of protection, in addition to many others," said Erbacci.The cameras being tested at LAX are on loan at no charge, but outfitting the entire airport with them would cost in the millions; it's an investment LAX hopes the government will help fund.Apart from giving every passenger a COVID test, Erbacci says it's the best way to detect the virus. But to be truly effective, he says it must be done nationwide to ensure arriving passengers have also been screened."If we can remove, even if it's only one-third or two-thirds of the people that actually have the virus, you're still stopping those people from coming in," said Erbacci. 3153

A Milledgeville, Georgia boy was arrested on Friday when a gun discharged from the boy's backpack inside an elementary school, WMAZ-TV reported. The boy attends Lakeview Academy, a school for students in grades 3 through 5. The boy told investigators that he was unaware that there was a gun in his backpack, and that he had never seen the firearm before. The gun reportedly went off as he was going through his backpack in the back of the classroom. After authorities arrived at the school, he was placed under arrest. The boy is facing four charges, according to WMAZ: Carrying a weapon in a school zone; reckless conduct; disrupting or interfering with public school; and possession of a pistol by a person under 18. Baldwin County Sheriff's Maj. Scott Deason told WMAZ that the firearm was a stolen Smith & Wesson 9-millimeter. Deason told the Union Reporter that that student could not explain to investigators how he ended up with the gun.“They questioned the juvenile in the presence of his mother,” Deason told the Union Reporter. “The mother also stated she didn’t know how the gun got into her son’s book bag.”The Union Reporter added that the boy is not allowed back in school until after he goes through the court system. 1320
