The Trump administration identified 471 parents who were removed from the United States without their children and "without being given the opportunity to elect or waive reunification," according to the latest court filing in an ongoing lawsuit,The revelation came in a filing in the family separation lawsuit Ms. L et al. vs. Immigration and Customs Enforcement et al. The administration has previously acknowledged that parents were removed without their children, but the latest report provides an updated count -- which had been requested by the American Civil Liberties Union to serve as a baseline to better track reunifications. The ACLU filed the case against the Trump administration last year on behalf of a Congolese woman, referred to as "Ms. L," who was seeking asylum in the US and was separated from her 7-year-old daughter. The case was later expanded to a class-action lawsuit.District Judge Dana Sabraw issued a preliminary injunction last June blocking most family separations at the US-Mexico border and ordering that those already separated be reunited.Wednesday's court filing notes that since the preliminary injunction was issued, the government has worked with a steering committee regarding the status of deported parents who have children remaining in federal care. The ACLU helped lead the committee, which reached out to all the parents who had been deported. The filing also includes the latest numbers on reunifications. As of Monday, 2,741 of 2,816 children have been discharged from government care, up six since the Feb. 20 status report. Four children are "proceeding towards reunification or other appropriate discharge," according to the filing. 1691
The Senate is expected to pass a bill Tuesday to fund the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund through 2090, permanently compensating individuals who were injured during the 2001 terrorist attacks and its aftermath rescuing people and removing debris under hazardous conditions. The House passed the bill earlier this month and President Donald Trump is expected to sign it.Comedian Jon Stewart and surviving first responders including John Feal pushed Congress to pass the extension before rewards diminished and the fund expired in 2020.In the face of dwindling resources and a surge in claims, the fund's administrator announced in February that it would need to significantly reduce its awards. Special Master Rupa Bhattacharyya said the fund received over 19,000 compensation forms from 2011 to 2016 and almost 20,000 more from 2016 to 2018 in part due to an increased rate of serious illnesses. The original fund from 2001 to 2004 distributed over billion to compensate the families of over 2,880 people who died on 9/11 and 2,680 individuals who were injured, according to the Justice Department. In 2011, Congress reactivated the fund and in 2015 reauthorized it for another five years, appropriating .4 billion to aid thousands more people. The fund was set to stop taking new claims in December 2020.The new bill would extend the expiration date for decades and cost what is deemed necessary. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it will cost about billion over the next decade. Last week, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, delayed the bill's passage, criticizing Congress for not offsetting its cost by not cutting government spending elsewhere. The bill is named after James Zadroga, Luis Alvarez and Ray Pfeifer, two New York police detectives and a firefighter who responded to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and died due to health complications attributed to their work at Ground Zero. 1921

Tom Hanks says he has the “blahs" but no fever as he and his wife Rita Wilson remain in isolation after contracting the coronavirus. A representative for the Oscar-winner confirms the pair have been released from a hospital and are in self-quarantine in Australia. The couple arrived in Australia in late January on the Gold Coast where an untitled Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann was to be shot. Hanks plays Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film has suspended production. 509
TUCSON, Ariz. — While the fight over border wall funding will apparently lead to a partial shut down of the federal government, political supporters of President Donald Trump are taking matters into their own hands.A viral crowdfunding effort on for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border has raised millionBy Friday morning at around 11:30 a.m. ET, a GoFundMe page titled "We The People Will Fund The Wall" passed million from nearly 200,000 donors. The funds were raised in just five days — but the campaign is just at just 1 percent of its billion goal. If the current pace of donations continue, the campaign would hit its goal in May of 2020.The campaign was started by Brian Kolfage, a triple amputee veteran and outspoken supporter of President Trump. While his GoFundMe page states that he has reached out to the Trump Administration in order to "secure a point of contact where all the funds will go upon completion," the White House has not yet publicly commented on the GoFundMe Campaign.Kolfage is able to keep every donation he receives, regardless if he reaches his goal. Donations are currently being sent to his GoFundMe account, though he asks that check be made payable to "WeFund The Wall"While it is true that some federal agencies will accept donations earmarked for specific projects, it 1326
