SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former Camp Pendleton Marine was sentenced Monday to more than 17 years in prison for owning and distributing child pornography.William Walsh IV, 55, was arrested in May 2017. Escondido Police officers searched his home and seized hundreds of files Walsh had downloaded through peer-to-peer file sharing software.A jury found Walsh guilty of all charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A fire erupted in the yard of a Skyline-area home and spread to nearby brush before crews successfully put it out.The fire was reported shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 7000 block of Tuther Way, near Skyline Drive.The fire is believed to have started in the shed or another location in the home's backyard before it spread to a fence and brush directly behind it.The fire also made its way to the house, damaging parts of the home's roof. Firefighters said later Wednesday afternoon that the home was a hoarder house. No one was home when the fire erupted. Smoke from the blaze was visible for several miles. 661

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three San Diego County sheriff's deputies were justified in fatally shooting an Alpine man who charged at them with a knife in his hand last fall, according to a report released Wednesday by the District Attorney's Office.Daniel Ayala, 31, was shot 10 times outside his apartment in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard last Nov. 12.Sgt. Chris Katra, Cpl. Sean McGillicuddy and Deputy Kevin Nulton responded to that address around 2:50 p.m. following reports that a man was screaming, talking about killing himself and others, and throwing items, according to a letter prepared by District Attorney Summer Stephan and addressed to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.Body camera footage from two of the lawmen was also released by the D.A.'s office.RELATED: Man who was fatally shot by deputies in Alpine identifiedAs the deputies approached the front door of Ayala's unit and knocked, announcing ``Sheriff's Department'' three times, Ayala opened the door, said ``What's up!'' and jabbed a knife twice through his metal screen door, the body-worn camera footage shows.The deputies backed up from the door as Nulton alerted the others by saying ``Knife, knife, knife.''Ayala then opened the screen door and advanced towards the lawmen, who opened fire, striking him mostly in the upper body, according to Stephan's letter.Ayala died at the scene. His 5-year-old son was inside the apartment during the entire encounter, but was physically unharmed, according to the district attorney.Toxicology results showed Ayala had methamphetamine, heroin, cannabis and alcohol in his system.Stephan's letter concludes that the deputies ``were in a confined space when Ayala advanced on them quickly with a knife in his hand.'' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A colony of 300,000 bees lives on the roof of the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego, and the hotel says that's perfectly fine with them.In fact, they planned it that way.The bees are part of Bee Leaf USA's Urban Bee Keeping program, which is an effort to help the struggling American Honey Bee population."This is the absolute most fantastic thing we can do for beekeeping at this point," says Travis Wolfe, from Bee Leaf USA."For a corporate entity to onboard something as outlandish as honey bees to offset their carbon footprint is one of the most moving and engaging things that one of these businesses can do," he says.The bees have been on the roof for about five years. They gather pollen in a three-mile radius around the hotel.They also make honey -- lots of it."They make about 7 gallons a year," says Wolfe. "That really is an enormous amount to consume."Fortunately, the hotel's Marina Kitchen and Bar helps use the honey."The ethos of the restaurant is to be as local as possible," says Executive Chef Aron Schwartz. "What could be more local than our roof?"Schwartz has put the honey in seasonal offerings for the last few years. Recently, it's been part of the salad dressing in their tomato and cucumber salad. It's also been featured on the charcuterie board and in a honey almond cake."It's about being restrained," says Schwartz. We're not going to put honey into 16 dishes. We're going to put it in one or two."This month, the bar is adding a honey-infused whiskey to several of its cocktails. They've partnered with Malahat Distillery in Miramar, which is aging their whiskey for six months in barrels coated with honey from the roof of the Marriott."We get a more naturally infused honey flavor out of that than some of the bigger producers who just stir honey into the whiskey," says Bar Operations Supervisor Michael Girard."It tastes amazing. You can smell the honey, you can taste the honey, but it's not a sweet sugar bomb," Girard says.The drinks will be available throughout the summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Security is tight at San Diego's mosques following an arson attack at a mosque in Escondido early Sunday morning. Someone set fire to the Islamic Center of Escondido on West Sixth Avenue around 3 a.m, but a handful of worshippers was inside, and the group put out the fire before it caused any significant damage. When police arrived, they found a message in graffiti referencing the recent shootings at mosques in New Zealand. Monday afternoon, two San Diego Police Department patrol cars sat in the parking lot of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Directors say worshipers are nervous. "They accept the faith of what happened, others are very, you know, worried as well. It's a mixed mood," said Khelil Ouznali, vice chair of the board of directors. The center already has surveillance cameras all over the property and guards on duty, but now the directors are considering hiring armed guards. "We are looking into improving security, you know, we are looking into different options based on the feedback from our community," said Ouznali. On the campus of San Diego State University Monday, dozens of students rallied against hate. They marched through the student union chanting, "No hate at state, Muslims are here to stay, no hate at state, Muslims are here to stay!" Faduma Mohamed is a member of the Muslim Student Association. "It just goes to show there's a lot of hate against us, but although some people can attempt to destroy Muslims, Islam itself the religion, cannot be destroyed," said Mohamed.
