CHENGDU, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called the past 110 days since the May 12 quake "shocking and touching" when speaking to journalists in southwest China's quake-hit Sichuan Province on Tuesday.     "The past 110 days were days that shocked our minds, and also days that touched our hearts," said Wen. "It's not a long time, but what we did, as witnessed by people all over the world, will go down in history." We made the utmost efforts to save people's lives even if there was a slightest hope, and we never gave up," Wen recalled at an improvisatori press conference in Yingxiu Town, the epicenter of the May 12 quake.     About 84,000 people were rescued out of debris after the quake, according to Wen.     The 8.0-magnitude earthquake killed more than 69,000 people in Sichuan and neighboring provinces and left nearly 18,000 missing.     According to the quake relief headquarters under the State Council, now people in the quake zone had no problem in eating, drinking among other life necessities. No major epidemics were reported and industry and agriculture basically resumed.     The nation also demonstrated a kind of great spirit in the quake rescue and relief efforts and gained plenty of precious experiences in coping with emergencies, Wen said. "These will be more everlasting in the quake zone and in our hearts."     Citing soldiers rescuing life around the clock, volunteers taking care of survivors and local people helping each other, Wen expressed his appreciation for all the merits demonstrated on the rescuers and survivors.     Wen said the rebuilding of houses and infrastructures remained the most urgent and difficult task for relief work, citing that it took more than 100 days to fully repair the trunk road linking quake-hit Dujiangyan and Wenchuan and it required no less to keep it open as aftershocks continued to trouble the areas.     According to Wen, in October a nationwide campaign will be launched on donating clothes and quilts to the quake zone to help people there spend winter "safe and sound".     He vowed the central government would continue the relief work as best as it can along with local governments and residents.

LHASA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake followed by some 1,000 aftershocks has affected more than 60,000 people in the Tibet Autonomous Region this week, the local government said in a news conference Saturday.     Since Monday's 6.6-magnitude quake struck Damxung County in Lhasa, more than 1,000 aftershocks have been monitored, including one that measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, said Gong Puguang, vice president of the regional government.     61,231 people in the region's capital have been affected and 989 houses collapsed, said Gong.     More than 4,800 people have been relocated out of the quake zone.     The quake-hit areas include Lhasa, Xigaze and Shannan regions, where 28 km of road and 11 bridges were damaged.     So far, ten people have been confirmed dead. 54 others sustained injuries, one third of those injuries are serious.     The central government allocated 10 million yuan (1.46 million U.S. dollars), 11,000 tents, quilts, and other quake relief materials to the affected area.     The items were being distributed as traffic and telecommunication resumed in the area.     The local government is evaluating economic losses from the disaster.     Seismologists predict more aftershocks will hit the county but the force is unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale. BEIJING, July 7 -- Chinese state-owned banks, including Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, intend to boost the contribution of the credit card business to their profits as they tap the rising demand to use plastic to pay for purchases.     ICBC, the country's biggest lender, expects to boost its credit cards in circulation to 50 million at the end of 2009 from 33 million now, Li Weiping, president of the Beijing-based bank's card center, told Shanghai Daily on Saturday in Shanghai. The credit card business accounts for about 10 percent of the bank's intermediary business, or fee-based income, and is one of the main contributors.     Chinese banks are shifting from its traditional deposit-lending business as they expand their profit avenues.     ''We expect the contribution (of credit cards to profit) to grow by 2 to 3 percentage points annually,'' Li said.     ICBC is among the country's "big four" state-owned banks to speed up the credit card business while their smaller joint stock rivals have already an edge in the market.     China Merchants Bank, the sixth biggest lender on the Chinese mainland, has one-third share of the credit card market. Other state-owned banks, including Agricultural Bank of China, said they are seeking growth as they pursue prudent risk control.     China Construction Bank expects to break even on its credit card business next year, said Wu Huitao, deputy general manager of the bank's credit card center. CCB targets card numbers at 20 million at the end of this year, from 16 million now, Wu said.     Credit cards will be the most important consumer credit product after mortgages, with profit forecast to reach US.6 billion by 2013, accounting for 22 percent of total consumer credit profits, said New York-based McKinsey & Co.

BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here on Thursday with ex-French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and urged the French government to work with China to put bilateral relations on a healthy and stable track.     Wen said France was the first Western power to forge diplomatic relations with China, and also the first European Union (EU) member state to set up a comprehensive strategic partnership with China.     China valued its friendship with France, which was fostered by leaders of several generations from both nations and by the two peoples, Wen said. He hoped France would work with China to push forward the healthy and stable growth of bilateral ties in line with the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits.     He clarified the truth behind violent crimes in Lhasa and other places, and stated China's stance on this issue. BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.     The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m.. The Level I emergency plan covers the most serious class of natural disasters.     A disaster relief work group of the State Council, China's Cabinet, rushed to the quake-hit county of Wenchuan on Monday evening to coordinate the rescue and relief work.     Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.     In central China's Hubei Province, the hailstorms attacked 10 counties, affecting 515,000 people, collapsing 85 rooms of 33 households and damaging another 4,761 rooms as of 11 a.m. Monday. The direct economic loss was estimated at 385 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars).     Hailstorms also lashed three counties of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday, affecting 92,100 locals and resulting in a direct economic loss of 7.65 million yuan.     In east China's Jiangsu Province, 24,000 people also suffered from strong winds and hails Sunday evening.
