SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) — Hundreds gathered in Santee on Saturday to call for justice for women of color.A flyer for the march advertised "promoting black and brown unity" and justice for Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillén.Breonna Taylor was an EMT who was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant against her boyfriend at her home in March. No drugs were found in her apartment.Vanessa Guillén was a 20-year-old Army specialist who disappeared in April from Fort Hood in Texas. Remains believed to be hers were found near the Army post in July, sparking protests over the military's handling of sexual harassment allegations.A section of Mission Gorge Rd. was blocked off by police for the planned protest. Counter-demonstrators also assembled in the area.One of the demonstration's organizers told ABC 10News that they hope their calls for racial justice are heard by Santee's City Council leaders."Santee has its things, it's known as being racist, and I'm here to change that. That's the goal," said Alana, one of the organizers with East County BIPOC, who adds that she is born and raised in Santee. "We tried to work with City Council and we tried to be a part of a diversity committee, and it was kind of just brushed under the rug. Nothing ever happened."The group is also calling for City Council to create a diversity committee led by people of color, for Santee Mayor John Minto to denounce the Defend East County Facebook group, and to meet with San Diego Sheriff's Department Captain Christina Bavencoff.One demonstrator told ABC 10News, "our message is that minorities can be safe here. I grew up here and there is racism but there's also perks to living in Santee. The community, when they accept you, can be good. But also for minorities, to feel comfortable and to expand all of our minds and to open up about Black Lives Matter as well."In regards to counter-protesters, the demonstrator added, "We're not here for them. SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. – A section of the Three Mile Bridge in Pensacola is missing after Hurricane Sally battered the Gulf Coast Wednesday morning.The structure, also known as the Pensacola Bay Bridge, runs between Pensacola and Gulf Breeze, Florida.WEAR reports that state Sen. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested over the weekend after a sideshow on the San Francisco Bay Bridge created miles of traffic.In video posted on social media, three cars are seen doing donuts in the middle of the bridge around 10:45 a.m. Sunday.One of the drivers, Gabriel Mora, 21, crashed his white mustang convertible, giving California Highway Patrol to make the arrest.Hours later, several other cars were caught on video burning rubber in the parking lot of pier 30 just south of the bridge.Residents who live in the area say they often call police about the car shows, but say they usually happen late at night. Police said the incident on the bridge caused traffic to back up for miles. 718

SAN YSIDRO (KGTV)-- Activists for deported veterans are concerned as US Customs and Border Patrol agents call artists, asking them to paint over their work.On the Mexico side of Friendship Park, inside Friendship Circle, an upside-down American flag with white crosses for stars, stands as a reminder, bringing awareness to deported veterans and the difficulty they face."It's like an SOS in the military if you're being overrun by the enemy, and part of that was you know, we need help," Advocate Hector Barajas said."I think veterans should do their time, or should receive some kind of treatment instead of getting deported, you know if you get in trouble," he said. Barajas said the veterans who were deported were convicted of a crime and not citizens of the U.S. Back in the days of the Vietnam War, Barajas said the U.S. took anyone who was willing to fight.In Tijuana, Barajas not only co-founded the mural in 2013, he's helped 375 deported veterans in Mexico, from 40 different countries. His shelter and resource center, Deported Veterans Support House, provides food, clothing and shelter, as they transition to life in Mexico.Barajas?was a deported veteran himself, and seeing that flag gave him hope.On the other side of the flag are names of deported veterans, some have "RIP" painted next to their names.Instead of stars, the flag has white crosses. "The crosses of people who made the sacrifice for others to seek the American dream but we've also had others who have died on this side of the border," Barajas said.That part of the mural is what US Customs and Border Patrol is focusing on, according to Barajas, "they asked me if I could paint it to paint away the stars so it didn't look like an American flag."US Customs and Border Patrol released this statement:Barajas told the agent he doesn't maintain the mural and washed his hands of the issue. Though he was upset that so much attention has been pointed at this particular mural, "it should be free speech I should you know be able to do anything with that flag," he said.The federal government owns the border wall, as well as the immediate area in front of the wall. 2202

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (KGTV) - A serial killer and former Camp Pendleton Marine who was sentenced to the death penalty may have killed himself at San Quentin State Prison Friday, prison officials said.Andrew Urdiales, 54, was found unresponsive during a security check of his cell late Friday night, according to staff members. Correctional officers performed CPR but Urdiales was pronounced dead less than an hour later.An autopsy will be performed but his death is being investigated as a suicide, officials said.RELATED: Serial killer convicted of Southern California murdersAn Orange County jury sentenced Urdiales to death one month ago for the murders of five women in San Diego, Mission Viejo, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City in the 1980s and 90s. Urdiales had been previously convicted of killing three Illinois women in the 1990s.Urdiales’ victim in San Diego, 31-year-old Maryann Wells, was shot in the head in a deserted industrial complex on Second Ave. in downtown San Diego in 1988. Investigators said Urdiales had sex with Wells then took back the he had paid her. Urdiales left behind a condom that eventually provided a DNA link, implicating him in the case.Another death row inmate was found dead Sunday night at San Quentin. Virendra Govin was convicted of killing four people by setting their home on fire in 2004. Govin's death is also being investigated as a suicide. Prison officials do not believe it was related to the death of Urdiales. 1483
