As hundreds of students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School prepare to board buses to lobby lawmakers to demand gun control, a measure was struck down on Tuesday by the Republican-held Florida House that would ban assault weapons. The motion was denied by a whopping 71-36 tally. Tuesday's vote came six days after a confessed gunman killed 17 lives at the Parkland, Florida high school. Many of the 3,000 students of the high school have since been vocal in their opposition to status quo gun laws, with the hope of increasing restrictions to posses firearms. The accused gunman, Nikolas Cruz, used an AR-15 type weapon during his massacre, which only lasted several minutes before he tried to blend in with students escaping the school. According to the Associated Press, the bill will likely no longer be considered during this session of the legislature. 898
Among the many casualties of social-distancing directives is the child’s birthday party. So when coronavirus lockdowns came to Truckee in the California mountains, Craig Fierro wanted to do his part. Fierro runs a shop specializing in motorized vehicles, parts and maintenance northwest of Lake Tahoe. He also carries brightly colored toy replicas of the motorbikes that are a favorite of kids who come to the shop. So he started dropping them off as wrapped birthday presents for tots and teens in the community in mid-April. According to the Sierra Sun, Fierro posted on Facebook asking if there were kids celebrating during the pandemic. After he handed out what he had in his story, Fierro got a surprise when he went to re-order. When the distribution center learned what he was doing, they reportedly sent him double his order. As of last count, he'd delivered about 50 after extending the gift-giving through June. 929
Another reason to wash those hands, Thursday is Global Handwashing Day.October 15 has been designated as a day to remember that “soap and water is one of the best steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Global Handwashing Day was established in 2008 by the Global Handwashing Partnership, an international organization dedicated to awareness about the health and economic benefits of handwashing hygiene and making clean water and soap available to all. This year’s Global Handwashing Day is also a reminder that proper handwashing with soap is a recognized way to stop the spread of the coronavirus. This year’s theme is “hand hygiene for all” and “calls for institutions and individuals to improve hand hygiene efforts in the COVID-19 response that can outlast the pandemic and ensure continued access to clean water and soap,” the CDC says. The CDC estimates that the number of colds and respiratory illnesses in a community could be reduced between 16-21 percent with handwashing education. The CDC has some recommendations for proper handwashing:There are 5 easy steps to washing hands: wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry.Wash for 20 seconds with soap and water.Make it part of the routine:Before you eatAfter using the restroomComing inside from spending time outside or in publicAdults can be a good role model and wash hands often. With younger children, make it a family activity and wash hands together.Choose a song or music verse to sing while washing.
