SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In the wake of the Florida tragedy, the weapon used by the shooter - the AR-15 - is once again in the spotlight.RELATED: Florida shooting suspect to plead guiltyRolando resident Wendy Hauffen bought her first AR-15 five years ago."The magazine holds 10 rounds just like a standard handgun because in California, we're limited to 10 rounds," said Hauffen.Hauffen, a member of San Diego County Gun Owners, says state requirements actually make an AR-15 slower to load than a handgun. With the required so-called bullet button feature, gun owners need a tool like an allen wrench to release the magazine. But anti-gun violence advocates say the rifle is still more dangerous than a handgun."It's designed to be more accurate. It's designed to project a bullet faster and more lethally," said Ron Marcus, Director of Public Outreach for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention.Starting last year, state law extended the assault weapons ban to include the sales of the AR-15 with the bullet buttons. Owners can still keep their AR-15s, but they have to register the gun with the state by June."If a gun is used in a crime, we need to be able to know how it got into the possession of the person who has it," said Marcus."I don't think it's going to be effective at all...the law-abiding citizens are following the law," said Hauffen. "The bad guys won't be registering their guns."Hauffen says registering the gun at the initial purchase is sufficient, but Marcus points out some transactions, like sales between private sellers and family, are hard to trace.State officials haven't released numbers, but it's estimated there are thousands - if not tens of thousands - of legally owned AR-15s in California. 1738

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- If you are experiencing mental fatigue like never before, you are not alone. Many people who are used to forging ahead in times of crisis, like this coronavirus pandemic, say the feeling is unfamiliar. Emily Chandler of Vista says she never could have imagined her kids would still be distance learning in the fall. "This has been going on so long, and I'm just exhausted," Chandler says. Her three sons are in three different schools and her oldest, Timmy, has autism. Helping them all with school means studying up on things herself. Marriage and family therapist Serene Carruthers, of Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, says what Chandler is feeling is tied to the seemingly endless nature of the pandemic."It really is because our body is built to respond to stressful events typically that last for a duration of a short period of time," says Carruthers. "Some experts call it surge capacity. Like a battery our adaptive system can provide us with the mental, physical and emotional power to survive a short-term emergency. Then it needs to be recharged which is easier said than done during a pandemic because for many people, their self-care rituals have been upended or canceled.""It is a very lonely time and I'm not getting that energy, that recharge," says Chandler. Carruthers says not to underestimate the power of play, which is free and can be done anywhere. She also recommends shifting expectations, maintaining connections with loved ones, keeping a gratitude journal about the good in your life, and exercising even if it's just walking in your home. Chandler says the reopening of her gym helped her feel like herself again, and she and Carruthers both say it's all right to ask for help, which Chandler says she's glad she did."I got on an anti-anxiety medication and I'm not embarrassed about that. It's really, really helped me," Chandler says. What has also helped is her boys have been troopers, making it clear that sometimes the biggest challenge can also bring the greatest joy. 2031

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Monday activist groups rallied at events throughout the day with the same message, more needs to be done to stop police brutality."My son was not killed he was murdered," Richard Abuka's son, Alfred Olango, was shot and killed by police in El Cajon back in 2016.Monday morning he stood on the steps of the Hall of Justice with other activists dredging up tragedy, compelling people to hear their message that new policies to hold police accountable need to be put in place. They held a banner with the names of those lost at the hands of law enforcement throughout the county."I've been pulled over numerous times, ripped out of my car, my car searched just because I'm driving with tattoos," a former convict by the nickname "Flaco" said at the Teach-In event held at San Diego City College. The events all supporting the National Day of Actions to Stop Police Brutality."We don't need cops," panelists spoke on ways to find a solution."I do work with the police and the DAs department in training their officers, and I help run a restorative justice program that's city wide and I'm expanding it to county wide," Aeiramique Blake said.
