SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Supporters of labor unions rallied across the country on Saturday ahead of a Supreme Court case that could effect how unions collect agency fees. One was held in downtown San Diego outside the California Democratic Convention, where hundreds of union supporters gathered for the “Working People’s Day of Action” event. Demonstrators were supporting the union AFSCME, which is engaged in a court battle that has made its way to the Supreme Court. In Janus v. AFSCME, the Supreme Court will decide whether it is legal for unions, which often donate to political causes, to compel members to agency fees. Those fees are collected by unions from employees who have opted not to join the union but still benefit from collective bargaining. The plaintiff, Mark Janus, has argued it violates his first amendment rights to pay fees to an organization that he disagrees with politically. A ruling in his favor could have wide-reaching effects on public sector labor unions around the country, argues famed labor organizer, Dolores Huerta. “That is going to be very devastating to our unions here in California,” said Huerta, if the court sides with Janus. 1213

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Anti-Defamation League in San Diego announced a reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who reportedly shot at the Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro. According to the ADL, the temple became aware that the building had been struck by bullets in “recent days.” When exactly the building was targeted is unclear. The league says the bullet holes were discovered in a portion of the building not in use. San Diego Police are also investigating the incident, but the ADL says they don’t believe there is a “known continuing threat to Temple Emanu-El or other Jewish institutions in the area.”“ADL takes any report of violence against a religious institution extremely seriously, and will always commit our utmost effort and resources to securing justice for victims,” said Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director. “We hope that by offering this reward, someone with critical information for investigators will be motivated to speak out.“According to the ADL, 2018 saw a 27 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents throughout California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The all-clear was given after a suspicious device forced the evacuation of a building at San Diego City College Monday. The device was reported Monday afternoon in or near Building A, according to the school. The building serves as administrative offices. The college says no classes were affected by the evacuation. The building, as well as a cafeteria will remain closed for the remainder of the day. 431

The downtown office (at 1600 Pacific Highway, Suite 273) will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for marriage licenses and ceremony appointments. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas.The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594
