WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two conservative Supreme Court justices are taking aim at the landmark case that legalized same-sex marriage across the U.S. in 2015.Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito released a four-page opinion Monday about the religious liberty implications from the Obergefell v. The unusual machinations at Thursday's hearing in the Senate could derail the nomination and push Issa to run for Congress, instead.The scheduled hearing came one year to the day after President Donald Trump nominated Issa, a former nine-term congressman serving parts of San Diego and Orange County, to run the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. But as the hearing began, ranking Democrat Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) moved that the hearing be held in private. "There's information in his FBI background investigation that concerns me greatly, and that I believe members may find problematic, and potentially disqualifying for Senate confirmation," Menendez said. "I firmly believe that every member of this committee should have the opportunity to review that information." He went on to suggest that holding the hearing in public could bring embarrassment or harm to Issa.Chairman James Risch (R-Idaho) initially suggested continuing in public, but then left the room for a brief conference with Menendez and Issa. When the senators returned, Issa was not with them. Risch revealed his decision to postpone the confirmation hearing indefinitely. Risch later told reporters he had seen nothing in Issa's FBI file that he found disqualifying.Afterward, in an interview with CNN, Issa suggested that Menendez was simply trying to defeat his nomination out of politics and that there is nothing in the background check that hasn't been previously reported in the media. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Trump administration has rescinded a rule that would have required international students to transfer schools or leave the country if their colleges hold classes entirely online this fall because of the coronavirus pandemic.The administration’s decision was announced at the start of a hearing in a federal lawsuit in Boston brought by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.The announcement brings relief to thousands of foreign students who had been at risk of being deported from the country, along with hundreds of universities that were scrambling to reassess their plans for the fall in light of the policy.The rule was facing opposition from state governments across the country. WAUKESHA -- A train struck and killed a pedestrian and their dog Monday morning in Waukesha, Wisconsin.Waukesha Police Captain Dan Baumann told Scripps station WTMJ in Milwaukee that the train hit a pedestrian and a dog around 6:40 a.m. near Barstow and Carroll.The train ended up stopping at Broadway Street in Waukesha for roughly two hours -- which blocked eight streets in the downtown Waukesha area during the morning commute.Police are still at the scene investigating and have not released any other information. 558
