(KGTV) - Dozens of people lined up for hours, as Play it Again Sports reopened in La Mesa on Thursday morning.Alfredo Lopez was the first in line, hoping to buy new weights."It says they're really resilient. So I think that's definitely part of what La Mesa has," Lopez says.The store had been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it had to stay closed longer than expected after looters destroyed the store following protests in La Mesa on May 30.The protests were over police violence, but the angry mob that attacked the Play it Again Sports came long after the protests ended."I was not happy. I was upset that night, for sure," says owner Dan Buxton. "So much had been put into the store and for all it to be taken away at that moment, it hurt."Buxton says he had to replace the ceiling, the light fixtures, the flooring, windows, displays, and much of his inventory.But he says the community helped rebuild and showed its true colors."Clearly, the real La Mesa is what we saw after May 30 and we're proud to be part of it," says Buxton.As for the line that greeted him when he opened the store Thursday, Buxton simply said, "Thank you.""Just like the support we've been receiving for the past 7 weeks, it's the same thing," he says. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — More changes could be coming to the "free drink" system in Las Vegas casinos.There is special technology on table-top machines, such as video poker, that monitors when you earn a comped drink. Now, gamblers may see it on slot machines, too.Ardent Progressive Systems and Games has already installed its technology on about 90 slot machines at The Riverside Resort in Laughlin.It's considered a trial run for a couple months to see how it goes."The hope now is, the trial down in Laughlin will be successful and then we've got several properties that are waiting to see the results of that and possibly implementing it in the near future up here in Las Vegas," said Albert Tabola with Ardent Progressive Systems and Games.The technology is a strip of LED lights that faces you while you play. Red means you're not ready for a drink. Green means you are ready for a drink. Yellow means you're getting close to qualifying for a drink. Orange means you're playing too slowly and falling off track."You will know as you play whether you qualify for a complimentary drink or not, as will the cocktail waitress," Tabola said.Players do not have to play max bet to qualify for a drink. (KGTV) - "Dozens" of cats were found Thursday in an East County apartment in unlivable conditions.San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) responded to a welfare check for elderly neglect just before 2 p.m. in the 9700 block of Channel Road. Deputies arrived and located "dozens of cats" in a 1000-square-foot apartment, according to a release.Deputies said the apartment was not in a liveable condition.Officials at the scene originally told 10News more than 100 cats were found, but later clarified it was difficult to count because the cats kept running away. Officials said that number is closer to 70 cats.An elderly female was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation, but she is expected to be fine. No criminal conduct is suspected and no arrests have been made. 803

(WFTS) -- This week, Amazon kicked thousands of sellers off its site for price gouging and Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced she’s investigating dozens of sellers amid the growing coronavirus pandemic.But KGTV sister station WFTS in Florida learned that while those sellers were making big profits off customers’ fear and misery, Amazon substantially raised its own prices on products like hand sanitizer, protective masks and toilet paper.Wayne Farmer sells groceries on Amazon, shipping them in boxes to customers out of his Lithia, FL home.“When this pandemic hit in the past month, our business has really just doubled, tripled,” Farmer said.Farmer knows his items are expensive because he has to pay a shopper to buy them at retail price at local stores, then he pays to ship them to Amazon or directly to customers and he pays Amazon fees of up to 30 percent.“When you see a price out there of on six cans of something, just realize at the end, the person who originated that, me, may have made ,” he said.But other Amazon sellers may have been price gouging, which is defined as when a seller increases the prices of goods, services of commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair.Earlier this week, Amazon announced it removed 500,000 listings and 3,900 third-party sellers from its site for suspected price gouging.More than half of Amazon’s total annual sales come from those sellers.According to Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, those sellers on Amazon the site raised prices by up to 1,600 percent for things like hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies and protective masks.But the I-Team has learned those third-party sellers weren’t alone in substantially raising prices.“When we looked at the data, we saw price increases from both Amazon and third-party sellers,” said Greg Mercer, founder and CEO of Jungle Scout.That company tracks Amazon sales data and sells it to third-party vendors.Mercer says Amazon not only earned commissions from those sellers accused of price gouging, it also more than doubled its own prices on essential goods as the COVID-19 pandemic grew between early January and mid-March.At one point earlier this month, Amazon listed a four-pack of its own brand of toilet paper for .We contacted Amazon about Jungle Scout’s findings, but a spokesperson wouldn’t directly answer our question about whether Amazon engaged in price gouging.She said in an emailed statement:· Amazon is working with state Attorneys General and sharing information to help them hold price gougers accountable· Amazon has instituted additional manual audits of products in its stores due to the increase risk of price gouging from unscrupulous sellers seeking to evade their automated systems and take advantage of consumers· Amazon leverages a number of automated and manual methods to detect potential price gouging in our store.
