SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans fighting for rent control is bringing their battle to city leaders this week.The group San Diego Tenants United is calling for city leaders to pass a rent control ordinance to curb the skyrocketing cost of living in San Diego.In a letter to San Diego's Smart Growth & Land Use Committee Chair Georgette Gomez, the group requested a new rent control ordinance and amendment to San Diego's Just Cause Eviction ordinance to prohibit landlords from increasing rents or displacing families.RELATED: San Diego group calling for rent controlThe group believes a permanent ordinance and amendment will slow the rate of increase in local rents and stifle the local housing crises."This can make real, effective changes that can truly fight displacement and gentrification," the letter to Gomez reads. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 16-year-old boy with a remote-controlled car tried to send 50 packages of methamphetamine across the border, U.S. Border Patrol agents said Tuesday. Agents were guarding the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday at 12:30 a.m. when they saw a person with two duffel bags walking along the secondary border wall. One of the agents who responded to the scene saw the boy hiding in thick brush. He had a remote-controlled car and 55 pounds of meth, agents said. The boy was arrested and will face smuggling charges. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A group of local doctors slammed San Diego's Board of Supervisors for not denouncing reported intimidation of the county's public health officer.The San Diego County Medical Society issued a statement, saying they are, "extremely disappointed by the failure of the Members of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to stand up against the personal abuse, attempted intimidation and doxing of our County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten."SDCMS pointed specifically to public testimony at the BOS' hearing on Tuesday, during which a caller revealed Wooten's address. She said sports have a huge impact on young women, "they have a greater chance of success professionally but also their self confidence is higher."A 2014 Ernst & Young and espnW study found 52% of female executives played sports in college. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A cruise ship passenger and three crew members who arrived in San Diego on Monday have since tested positive for the novel coronavirus.County spokesperson José álvarez confirmed a passenger on the Celebrity Eclipse, which arrived in San Diego Monday, has tested positive for COVID-19. Tuesday afternoon, county health officials revealed that 3 crew members, who had been self-isolating, also tested positive. County health officials said they were notified before the ship came in that one passenger had a heart ailment and "possible" pneumonia. The passenger was taken to a hospital Monday and later tested positive for COVID-19.RELATED: San Diego issues health orders on cruise ships amid COVID-19Deborah Filgate and her husband were among the 2,500 passengers on board that cruise. "We've been told all the way through that we were absolutely fine, no one sick at all, so it's a bit strange," said Filgate. "We were very relieved to leave the ship, but thinking about what that might have represented to the people you came in contat with, it's not such a great feeling now," said Filgate.A letter from Celebrity Cruises was sent to passengers reading, "because you were a passenger on this same voyage, it is possible you were exposed to someone who was sick with COVID-19."The letter goes on to direct passengers to complete a 14-day isolation. The passenger is not a San Diego County resident. The passenger is in the hospital in serious condition."There is no change in the plan of disembarking the remaining passengers today," álvarez said regarding the ship. "They will be screened prior to departure and only those who are asymptomatic and without fever are allowed to leave and proceed to transportation out of the county."A statement from the cruise line to 10News read:"We received clearance from port authorities and public health officials to disembark our guests and return them safely to their homes. No guests or crewmembers reported with symptoms throughout the sailing, and guests are going through exit health screenings when they leave the ship.
