FULTON COUNTY — A jury has found a woman guilty on all counts for hitting and killing three children and seriously injuring a fourth as they attempted to get on a school bus last year.Sentencing for Alyssa Shepherd will be held Dec. 18.Closing arguments wrapped up this afternoon in the case against Shepherd who is accused of striking and killing 6-year-old twins Mason and Xzavier Ingle and their 9-year-old sister Alivia Stahl in October 2018. Police and prosecutors have alleged Shepherd drove past a school bus stop arm near Rochester. A fourth child, Maverik Lowe, 11 at the time, was also struck and seriously injured. Lowe survived.Shepherd was charged with three counts of reckless homicide, one count of passing a school bus causing injury and one count of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury."The biggest thing with it is the total lack of braking the amount of distance that was covered and seeing something in the roadway on a Tuesday morning when it's school time and just barreling into it not slowing down. We felt like was just unacceptable," Fulton County Prosecutor Mike Marrs said.The childrens' mother, Brittany Ingle, spoke to reporters afterward and said she did not believe Shepherd showed any remorse at the trial."What I want to tell you as a mother, from one mother to another, when I was sitting up there giving my testimony, I looked at her straight in the eyes because you just want some feeling you just want something. and she gave nothing," Ingle said. Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, when it made landfall as a Category 5 storm this week. Sarah Ann Showell, whose family owns a resort on the island, has now seen the catastrophic damage for herself. “They don’t look anything [like] they’re supposed to,” she says. “Entire buildings are flattened, trees are all snapped like toothpicks, there’s no greenery left.”She flew over Green Turtle Cay, a Bahamian island hit by hurricane Dorian, to see what the storm had done. "It’s actually hard to figure out what you’re looking at, and these are places that you know very well," Showell says.Showell needed to see what the storm did to her family's resort, Green Turtle Club, the largest employer on the island with about 50 employees. While the storm left its mark, she says everyone she knows who stayed on this island for Dorian is safe. IDAHO — If you've ever been to Wallowa Lake in eastern Oregon, you may have seen some seemingly tame deer. That has a lot to do with the fact that people are feeding them. But biologists in Idaho say feeding wild animals is a bad idea.Normally wild animals like deer are wary of humans, so why was a mule deer in the middle of McCall, Idaho, and why did it approach a KIVI reporter when he was pointing a camera at it? Darrel Meints, Idaho Fish and Game's deer and elk coordinator, thinks he knows."I'm guessing that deer has been fed based on its behavior,” Meints said. “I think she's going to see if you're going to throw her a handout."Deer that have been fed become habituated to humans, and what may begin as a seemingly compassionate act — feeding a hungry deer or two — can become a major nuisance for landowners."People will call us and the call will start out 'well, last week there was one or two deer in my yard and I felt a little sorry for them and I threw them a little hay and now there's 10 or 20 or 30 in my backyard, and they're eating all my shrubs and trees,' " said Meints. Getting that close to a deer is an interesting encounter to say the least, but feeding deer can actually increase their odds of dying, especially during winter."Mule deer don't do well eating alfalfa. They're browsers. They eat woody shrubs and trees and things of that nature. So, you can make them sick and they don't do well," Meints said.People who feed wildlife in high traffic areas like McCall, Idaho, greatly increase their likelihood of being hit by a car, which could kill the animal and cause thousands of dollars in damage. But that's not the only hazard habituated animals bring to humans and their pets. "When you have large numbers of animals like that, you will draw in predators like mountain lions or coyotes of that nature," said Meints.As tempting as it may be, these are just some of the many reasons biologists say, with the possible exception of song birds, feeding wild animals is a bad idea."Oftentimes people think they're doing the right thing and helping wildlife, but over the long run they're not.
