SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police sought public help Tuesday to identify a pair of suspects who robbed two San Diego State University Students at gunpoint just blocks from campus.The students were walking about 1:35 a.m. Monday at Campanile Drive and Dorothy Drive when two men approached and demanded their belongings, according to the SDSU Police Department. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.The victims complied with the demands and were not injured, according to police, who said the suspects fled in a white, four-door car heading north on Campanile Drive toward Montezuma Road.Both suspects were described as roughly 170-pound black men, one about 5- foot-7 and the other about 5-foot-10. They both wore dark hooded sweatshirts, saggy pants and sneakers.The San Diego Police Department is investigating the robbery, but university police released information as part of a community safety notification.Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call the SDPD at (619) 531-2000. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The driver of a minivan was sought this morning for leaving the scene of a Middletown hit-and-run that left a 66-year-old bicyclist hospitalized with a life-threatening head injury, police said.The victim was riding near the intersection of India and West Washington streets at 1:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a blue or gray 2005 Dodge Caravan, Georgia license number RRJ7004. The vehicle may have a shattered windshield or front-end damage, according to San Diego police.Following the collision, the driver of the minivan fled, possibly back toward Interstate 5, police said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council will take a look at the Riverwalk San Diego project Tuesday, a proposed transit-oriented neighborhood development along the San Diego River in Mission Valley.International real estate firm Hines has proposed the 200-acre project, which is intended to transform the existing Riverwalk golf course into a neighborhood as well as restore the stretch of the San Diego River that runs through it.According to Hines, if the plan is approved Tuesday, the company plans to break ground during the second half of 2021.The San Diego Planning Commission recommended approval of Riverwalk San Diego project on Oct. 22 with five in favor, one abstention and one commissioner absent.The Hines plan includes 4,300 homes -- 10% of which are planned to be affordable housing -- a Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley stop, 152,000-square-feet of retail space, 1 million square feet of office space, 100 acres of parks and new bike and pedestrian paths, including an extension of the San Diego River Trail."I think it could be something to set the standard for what transit- oriented development can look like," said San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz.The Riverwalk plan, established through a partnership between Hines and the Levi-Cushman family landowners, incorporates community input gathered over several years by the Hines team in nearly 100 stakeholder and community planning group meetings."We appreciate that the planning commissioners recognized the extensive community outreach and collaboration that helped form our plan and the care we're taking to create an environmentally responsible, transit- oriented legacy project for San Diego," said Eric Hepfer, managing director at Hines. 1754

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Nature Index research database announced today that UC San Diego ranks in the top 10 worldwide among institutions researching biomedical science topics.UCSD ranked sixth among the top-200 academic institutions and ninth among healthcare institutions worldwide in biomedical sciences. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country.The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - On Tuesday park rangers recovered the body of a San Diego man who fell from a cliff at Sequoia National Park last weekend.Anton Dokov, 29, slipped on a hiking trail in the Watchtower area above Tokopah Valley and slid over a sheer precipice on Sunday, according to Sintia Kawasaki-Yee, spokeswoman for the Central California nature preserve."Rangers responded that same day, but dangerous ice and snow conditions with a very steep slope meant they had to turn around,'' Kawasaki- Yee said.
