WUHAN, March 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday started building a canal from the middle section of the Yangtze River to a tributary that connects with China's South-North Water Diversion project.Costing more than six billion yuan (880 million U.S. dollars), the 67.23 km project will divert 3.1 billion cubic meters of water every year from Yangtze's Jingjiang section to the Hanjiang River, one of the major sources of water for north China once the diversion project is complete.China's South-North Water Diversion project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south to the dry north. The central part of the project will divert water from Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Hanjiang River to north China cities like Beijing and Tianjin.According to research by Hubei provincial environmental protection bureau, without water from the canal the Hanjiang River would only have one third of its average runoff once water is diverted, and the water level of middle and lower reaches of Hanjiang would drop by 0.5 meter. The canal, which will be completed in 2014, will prevent problems arising such as algae pollution if water levels were decreased dramatically, said Shen Xiaoli, an engineer with the Hubei Environmental Sciences Institute. The canal is expected to benefit about 8.9 million people and 43,000 hectares of farmland in the lower reaches of Hanjiang.Once completed the five to six meters deep canal could be used by ships weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, facilitating transportation of coal from the north to the south, said Xu Shaojun, head of the Hubei Provincial Investigation and Design Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower.

TAIYUAN, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of people trapped underground after a coal mine flooding in north China's Shanxi Province was revised -- for a second time -- to 153 from 123, rescuers said late Sunday night.Investigations showed that 261 workers were in the pit of Wangjialing Coal Mine under construction when underground water gushed in at about 1:40 p.m.. Of them, 108 were lifted safely to the ground while 153 others trapped in the shaft, according to the rescue headquarters."Most of the trapped are migrant workers from Shanxi, Hebei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces," a rescuer said.Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang (1st R, front) oversees the search and rescue operation at the site of a flooding accident of Wangjialing Coal Mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, in north China's Shanxi Province, on March 29, 2010. The number of people trapped underground after the flooding accident at Wangjialing Coal Mine was revised -- for a second time -- to 153 from 123, rescuers said late Sunday nightThe exact number of people trapped is still being checked.Soon after the accident happened, the Shanxi Provincial Work Safety Administration and the Shanxi Provincial Emergency Affairs Office said 152 people were trapped underground, but officials later changed the figure to 123.Rescuers are struggling to save the trapped people, and local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ordered local authorities to spare no effort to save the trapped while guarding against secondary accidents.Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang rushed to the site late Sunday to oversee the search and rescue operation. The mine, sitting astride Xiangning County of Linfen City and Hejin City of Yuncheng City, covers about 180 square kilometers. The mining zone boasts more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal reserves, including nearly 1.04 billion tonnes of proved reserves, according to the company's official website. It is now under infrastructure construction and is expected to produce 6 million tonnes of coal annually once put into operation. The mine, affiliated to the state-owned Huajin Coking Coal Co. LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S.-China relations are improving on the back of their need for mutual support after undergoing a rocky period earlier this year, U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff said here Friday. The bilateral relationship came under pressure due to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the ** Lama's U.S. visit and tensions in the Korean Peninsula, but the overall situation was good and the bilateral cooperation was at a very high level, the Democratic congressman from California told a Chinese press club luncheon.Schiff said he didn't think the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula would have a serious impact on U.S. relations with China. He said both countries needed each other's support in forums such as the six-party talks to resolve the issue of nuclear proliferation on the peninsular. The United States also needed China's cooperation in developing alternative and green energy. The two nations could not simply compete with each other on this front, but needed to learn from each other, he said.Schiff sponsored the Nuclear Forensics and Attribution Act to strengthen the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's efforts in developing techniques for "fingerprinting" nuclear material and encouraged U.S. President Barack Obama to negotiate international agreements to govern international nuclear forensics activities.Schiff is also leading the effort to combat intellectual property theft. He is a co-chair of the Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus, a bipartisan group of House and Senate lawmakers dedicated to working with America's international trading partners to secure the enactment of strong copyright laws as well as their vigilant enforcement.Schiff said Hollywood movies are popular in China and the movie industry is one of the few sectors enjoying a trade surplus. He said it was important for the U.S. to strengthen its efforts to fight piracy, admitting that in this field, the United States and China had many concerns.
