SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County has been battered by storms this winter, showering the county for a bright and beautiful spring. But with that comes the possibility of more little creatures living off all that glorious foliage. So can San Diegans expect more mosquitoes buzzing around this season? Simple answer: Maybe. While it's possible the county could see more mosquitoes in the spring, more rain doesn't guarantee it, Jessica Northrup, from the county's Land Use and Environment Group, says.RELATED: Swarms of Painted Lady butterflies spotted in North County"... When it comes to mosquitoes, you have to wait and see if more rain equals more bugs. That is because increased rainfall can create more—or fewer—places for mosquitoes to lay eggs and breed. Places where water may have been stagnant could be flowing and mosquitoes don’t breed in flowing water," Northrup said. That's why the county urges residents to dump out standing water that may have collected due to recent rains. That message was amplified Friday, as the county reported the first sign of summer as a dead hawk in Lakeside tested positive for West Nile virus. While officials said the infection appeared to be an old one, it served as a reminder that the virus is established in the county.RELATED: Sunshine and warmth return to San Diego this weekendBringing the message back to the start: While more water doesn't equal more mosquitoes, residents are cautioned to take action where they can."On the other hand, places that otherwise would not be holding water in dry years could be holding water now," Northrup said. "It is important that residents dump out standing water that has collected during the rain to prevent mosquito breeding."Chris Conlan, supervising vector ecologist with the County of San Diego, says the same rains that have led to a recent boom in butterflies around the county could not only mean more mosquitoes, but also gnats, ticks, beetles, and "mosquito hawks," which are not mosquitoes but look strikingly similar.RELATED: California drought free for the first time since 2011" ...You have have to shift your strategy and adapt to where the mosquitoes are growing," Conlan said in a release. "Things are going to get a bit more buggy as we get into the spring."Residents can learn more about how to prevent mosquito breeding, report issues, and how to protect themselves on the county's "Fight the Bite!" website. 2425

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear. The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid. It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. Its steep face makes it difficult for anyone brave enough to try and scale it.BACK IN 2006: San Diegans finding peace atop Ross Rock at Sunset CliffsPhotos from 10News Weather Watcher Jim Grant show the mermaid now in place, looking into Point Loma under the gray sky.10News reporter Travis Rice is looking into this story and will have more on 10News at 5 p.m.The mysteriously installed mermaid is just the latest object to grace "The Rock" at Sunset Cliffs. Placing objects on the Ross Rock has almost become a ritual. In 2006, a large pterodactyl had sat atop the rock before being washed away. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below. It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ring video captured a man leaping into action, after an incident at a neighbor's Mira Mesa home.Just off Parkdale Avenue, Rod Hutty ran to the front yard in his sandals and saw some frantic neighbors last Wednesday afternoon."I heard a scream and two women came out. One had a stick and shouted, 'Stop,'" said Hutty. Video shows what happened next. Hutty says he spotted a man in his early 20s, who started running."My adrenaline kicked in. I knew something was wrong. I shouted at him," said Hutty.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHutty gave chase. He saw another man running in a different direction, causing Hutty to go after him. What isn't seen on camera is Hutty catching up to him."I went like this and he went like this, and grabbed him and almost took him to the ground. Then he got away," said Hutty.Hutty chased them for a bit, before heading back to get his bike. He never saw them again. Witnesses spotted a blue minivan picking up the two men. Hutty later got a visit from the Eggum family, receiving a big "thank you." Hutty's cousin placed the video on the Neighbors by Ring app."Did the best he could ... appreciate neighbors helping out," said Gordon Eggum.Eggum says his wife saw the two men lurking in the backyard after hopping the fence. He believes it's the same men who broke into their home a week prior, stealing cash and jewelry.Hutty's aunt told 10News it was "kind of a stupid act," because they may have been armed, but it shows Hutty has a big heart. If you have any information on the case, call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1615

Refrigerator and freezer doors should also be kept closed and all unnecessary lighting should be turned off, health and safety permitting. The company suggested customers also reduce their water use due to the need for electricity to pump and process water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans across the county witnessing a row of fluttering lights in the night sky were left pondering possibilities, including the existence of aliens and, well, Santa.SpaceX launched 60 new Starlink satellites into orbit Monday night. The Starlink satellites are part of Elon Musk's mission to create a space-based broadband internet system. "With performance that far surpasses that of traditional satellite internet, and a global network unbounded by ground infrastructure limitations, Starlink will deliver high speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable," Starlink said on its website.RELATED NEWS: Mysterious lights in San Diego sky: Navy says lights were flares from training exerciseThe sky was clear enough for people to catch the lights streaming into space. "Wtf is in the sky rn," wrote Angel Clark on Twitter. "I saw it. My whole family did. From San Diego. Heading south. It was about 9 or so lights. All on a line," wrote Bill the Butcher. The glow from the satellites were visible across San Diego ... all the way to infinity and beyond.RELATED NEWS: Cornfields or not, UFO sightings aren't as common in Indiana as you might think - but they do happen"Moon directly behind me, lights moving right to left. In Thousand Oaks, CA on a night hike. Many witnesses. #ufosighting #lineoflights huge through the entire night sky. Took minutes to pass through," wrote filmmaker Megan Lee Joy along with a photo she posted on her verified Twitter account. This station received calls and emails from several viewers that witnessed the spectacle in the sky. 1658
