Researchers at University of Michigan have developed a fake news detector to help fight against misinformation. The technology is "an algorithm-based system that identifies telltale linguistic cues in fake news stories." The team says the system is "comparable to and sometimes better than humans at correctly identifying fake news stories."According to their study, linguistic analysis tracks things like grammatical structure, word choice, punctuation and complexity. But there are challenges to making sure the system properly deciphers stories. Researchers say the difficulty in building a fake news detectors is not in developing the algorithm itself, "but in finding the right data with which to train that algorithm."The system is still in its beta stage. (KGTV) — A 53-year-old cyclist remains on life support after a hit-and-run crash in Ramona.Michelle Scott was biking to work Wednesday morning on State Route 67 when California Highway Patrol says a driver swerved onto the shoulder and hit her. Scott was wearing a helmet and had lights and reflective gear on her bicycle, her husband said."It was impossible not to have seen her," Don Scott said.RELATED: Bicyclist airlifted after being hurt in hit-and-run crash in RamonaThe crash happened on SR-67 north of Dye Road around 6:30 a.m.Investigators say the driver was in a black 2019 Ford Edge. They've since learned the vehicle had stolen license plates.CHP says the driver sped off from the crash site with Michelle's bicycle still lodged in the front grill, but Don isn't letting anger seep in."Anger is not going to help the recovery process," he said. "I'm actually most focused on the recovery of my wife."Both he and Michelle are Community Emergency Response Team volunteers through FEMA and the Ramona Fire Department, with training to respond to disasters."It's hard to accept the different stages of grieving when you already know them but you're the one that's going through the grieving," he said.Michelle was sent flying into the roadway after the crash. Record high ocean temperatures are bringing large crowds to San Diego beaches. The warm water also has the potential to attract more stingrays and jellyfish to the area.The Scripps Institute of Oceanography reports that surface ocean temperatures reached a record 79.5 degrees Sunday, which is more than ten degrees above normal. That, combined with unseasonably hot and humid weather, brought 333,680 people to City of San Diego beaches over the weekend, city lifeguards estimate. Clarissa Anderson, executive director of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, said it's unclear what has led to the higher temperatures. "The last several years we really have seen these anomalous temperatures every summer," she said, adding that the hot and humid water could be playing a role.The warm waters could also attract more stingrays to plant themselves along the shallow sand and jelly fish in the water just off shore. People who don't shuffle their feet risk a sting from the ray, while jelly fish sting on contact."More people are going to the beach, warmer temperatures, nice water and so you've just got more people and more animals, higher probability of encounter," Anderson said.
