SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A grieving mother says the flu was the main cause in the death of her healthy teenage son.Cellphone video captured a smiling Brian Finete, 19, surprising his mother with flowers for her birthday last Tuesday night at their home in Clairemont."The moment was special. He was always a happy boy with a big heart. He loved life and always wanted to make people happy," said Maria Finete.Later that night, Finete played Xbox all night with his friend at his home. Just past 4 a.m., he went to the bathroom. About two hours later, the friend woke up and went looking for him. Finete was found collapsed in the bathroom."I started screaming, said to call 911. I start CPR," said Maria.Finete was rushed to a hospital, but was declared brain dead a few days later. He was taken off life support on Saturday."We have no words to describe this. We don't understand why," said Maria.Finete, who had no known underlying conditions, tested positive for influenza B. Doctors told her the flu had spiked his blood sugar levels, and the combination of the flu and the high blood sugar levels caused him to collapse and stop breathing. "I never thought in my mind my kid would die from that," said a tearful Maria.She says her son had few symptoms. He had a lingering cough from a cold from last month. The night before he collapsed, he woke up in a sweat next to his girlfriend."When he sleeps he always sweats a little bit. He did tell her, 'I'm not feeling that good,'" said Maria.She says he didn't have a fever, took ibuprofen for a headache and seemed fine that Tuesday night. He was discovered hours later."Just so hard to see my baby gone. Don't know what to do without him," said Maria.Amid the grief: the pain of 'what ifs.' Her son decided not to get a flu shot this season, despite almost always getting it in the past."Take it. Take the flu shot if you can," said Maria. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 59-year-old woman is the sixth person to die from the flu in San Diego County this flu season.The East County woman died on Nov. 23 from influenza B and there was no indication she received a flu shot this season, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver was killed and several teens were injured Tuesday night in a high-speed solo vehicle crash along State Route 905 in south San Diego.The crash happened on the westbound lanes near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp about 9:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver lost control of the dark-colored Chrysler 300, struck the center divide, and was ejected from the car. The victim was declared dead at the scene. It was initially reported that the driver, a 21-year-old male, was a teenager. Firefighters worked to extricate two passengers trapped in the rear passenger seats, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The injured victims, three males and two females ranging in age between 15- to 21-years-old, were transported to UCSD and Scripps Mercy for their injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.CHP officers are investigating if drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving contributed to the crash.Investigators are asking anyone that witnessed the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol.The Beyer Boulevard on-ramp to the westbound state Route 905 was shut down until at least midnight, according to the CHP. 1191

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 40-year-old San Diego cold case was solved with the help of a genealogical database, the San Diego Police Department said Thursday. 37-year-old Barbara Becker was murdered in her La Jolla home on March 21, 1979, police said. According to the department, Becker’s two young boys came home from school to discover their mother’s body. RELATED: Genetic genealogy results solve new cold case as privacy concerns continueBecker died from “numerous sharp force injuries” but, based on evidence, police say she put up a fight, injuring the suspect in the process and causing him to leave behind a trail of blood. Detectives worked to solve the crime, but police say eventually all leads were exhausted and the case went cold. In October of 2018, the San Diego Police Cold Case Unit and San Diego County’s District Attorney’s Office reached out to the FBI’s genealogy team for help solving the case. Police say the team was able to identify a possible suspect using the public-access genealogical database as well as several family members of the suspect. Members of Chartrand’s family told investigators that he lived in the San Diego area at the time of Becker’s murder. Investigators also learned that Chartrand died in Arizona in 1995. “The entire investigative team is grateful the case has been solved however, it is tempered by the fact it took forty years to give Barbara Becker’s family the answers they deserved and that Chartrand was able to avoid justice for 16 years after Barbara Becker’s murder,” the San Diego Police Department said in a statement. 1777

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With coronavirus cases surging statewide and hospital beds expected to fill rapidly, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday a more sweeping stay-at-home order could soon be imposed in the vast majority of California in hopes of preventing the health care system from being overrun.Newsom said nine more of the state's 58 counties have been moved into the most restrictive "purple" tier of the state's COVID-19 monitoring system, meaning 51 counties are now in that tier. And those counties would be the ones likely subjected to a stay-at-home order reminiscent of the restrictions that were imposed at the onset of the pandemic, he said. All of Southern California is in the "purple" tier."The red flags are flying in terms of the trajectory in our projections of (case and hospitalization) growth," Newsom said. "... If these trends continue we're going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic action, including taking a look at those purple tier counties."He said those actions include "the potential for a stay-at-home order for those regions in purple."The action follows what Newsom called an 89% increase in hospitalizations statewide over the past 14 days, and projections that the number of hospitalizations could double or triple within a month, based on the surging case numbers over the past two weeks. The state projects that 78% of hospital beds will be filled by Christmas Eve, and all currently available intensive care unit beds will be occupied by mid-December."We're now looking in real time at hospitalization numbers and ICU capacity in those regions," he said. "We are assessing this in real time over the next day or two to make determinations of deep purple moves in those purple tier status (counties) that is more equivalent, more in line with the stay-at- home order that folks were familiar with at the beginning of this year, with modifications in terms of the work that we are currently doing."Newsom noted that all hospitals have the ability to increase bed capacity, and the state has 11 surge facilities planned statewide that can add nearly 1,900 beds. But providing staffing for all of those beds could be an issue, he said.Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's Health and Human Services Secretary, noted that since hospital numbers tend to rise about two weeks later than cases are confirmed, the impact of the infection surge over the past two weeks has not even begun to impact the already elevated hospitalization numbers.Ghaly said everything is on the table in terms of confronting the surge, including the possible stay-at-home order."Everything is on the table in considering how we effectively guide the state through this, and working with our local partners to make sure what we do is both impactful and as time-limited as possible," Ghaly said. "We know this is hard for all Californians, and (we are) making sure that we choose something that will make a difference but that we can track that difference and give people some confidence that we will only do it as long as we need to to bring the hospitals into a situation that they can handle the incoming patient numbers and provide high-quality care in a way that protects our health care workforce as well." 3227
