Locals call Atlanta, Georgia, the city too busy to hate.During early voting, however, it’s filled with people who would rather not wait.“We’re trying to make sure that our voices are heard during a really critical moment in our nation’s history,” said local voter Everette Long. “And avoid really long lines.”A record number of voters turned out during the first day of early voting in Georgia this year, including first-time voter Tim Crane.“I stood there for about four hours, but I wasn’t mad,” Crane said. “I was kind of excited to go on and see what voting was like.”Long lines at the polls and broken voting machines were issues for thousands of Georgia voters on primary day back in June, which raised questions about what it would be like when it came time for this year’s presidential election. In an effort to avoid long lines, thousands of voters flocked to the Atlanta Hawks’ State Farm Arena, which was transformed into the state’s largest early polling precinct. Some showed up ready to time any potential delays.“We got here early and it took 17 minutes and 40 seconds to vote,” said Torri Griffin who took her mother, Lena Joiner, to fill out their ballots at the pro basketball arena.Atlanta Hawks basketball head coach Lloyd Pierce moved from the sidelines on the court to the front lines of this early voting site.“Just doing my duty,” Pierce said. “Trying to help making voting easy for everybody.”According to the United States Elections Projects, more than 10 million Americans cast their ballots within the first day-and-a-half of 2020 early voting, a number that shatters the 2016 turnout. While many people tout the benefits of early voting, experts warn there could be some challenges. Political science expert Robert Preuhs, Ph.D. of MSU Denver explains.“If something happens between now and Election Day, that could fundamentally change people’s minds, they’re already going to have their ballot in,” he said.Preuhs says early voting could change the dynamics of this election and alter the timeframe for when ballots are counted.“The big issue is going to be on Election Day, because most states don’t allow for county clerks to count until Election Day and so you have all these ballots that still need to be counted at once,” he said.Despite any perceived challenges, many voters are still showing up early with the hopes of avoiding any kind of voter suppression“However, suppressed people feel, knowing that there are opportunities like this, people feel validated about their decisions,” said local voter Aaron Burkes. They're decisions that will impact the future of our country as Americans in Atlanta can’t wait to make their votes matter, even with Election Day just few weeks away. 2725

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A China Airlines flight crew spotted what appeared to be a person flying a jet pack 6,000 feet above the ground near LAX Wednesday, less than two months after two separate airline crews reported seeing a jet pack in the Cudahy and South Gate areas.China Airlines flight 006 was approaching LAX about 1:45 p.m. when the crew "reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jet pack at an approximate altitude of 6,000 feet, about seven miles northwest of Los Angeles International Airport," the Federal Aviation Administration said. The FAA is also investigating an Aug. 30 sighting of what appeared to be a person in a jet pack about 3,000 feet above the ground in the Cudahy and South Gate areas, but investigators have not been able to verify those reports, the FAA's Ian Gregor said Wednesday.RELATED: FBI releases map of Sunday's 'guy in a jet pack' in Los AngelesAt the time of the August sightings, the pilot of American Airlines flight 1997 radioed the LAX tower to make the unusual report of somebody apparently flying at about 3,000 feet with a jet pack. The plane was flying northwest of the junction of the 710 and the Century (105) freeways, according to a map released by the FBI. More specifically, it appears the plane was in the area west of the 710, east of San Juan Avenue, north of Firestone Boulevard and south of Cudahy Park."Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack," the pilot said on the August radio transmission. An air-traffic controller -- noticeably taken aback by the report -- responded, "American 1997, OK, thank you for the update. Left side or right side?""Off the left side," the pilot replied, "at maybe, uh, 300 yards or so, at our altitude."At least one other pilot, aboard a Southwest Airlines flight that August, also spotted the unusual aviator: "Tower, we just saw the guy pass by us," the pilot reported. The LAX tower alerted an inbound JetBlue pilot to beware of "a person with a jet pack reported 300 yards south of the L.A. final at about 3,000 feet." The pilot responded, "We heard and are definitely looking."The bewildered air-traffic controller responded, "Only in L.A."Further information about Wednesday's sighting was not immediately available from the FAA. 2255

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel will host the first major Hollywood awards ceremony of the coronavirus pandemic — but just how the Emmy Awards will be held remains cloudy. Kimmel acknowledged that in Tuesday's announcement, saying it was unclear how or where the Sept. 20 ceremony will be held. ABC said details on the show's production will be announced soon. Choosing Kimmel to emcee the ceremony reverses course from last year's no-host Emmys. The entertainment industry is just beginning to restart production following a months-long shutdown aimed at curtailing the spread of COVID-19. Nominations for the 72nd prime-time Emmys will be announced by the TV academy on July 28. 688

Live music might feel like a thing of the past, but venues and event organizers are working on ideas to bring it back sooner rather than later in the age of COVID-19.Ticketmaster says it has been working with event organizers and venues to navigate how they plan to admit fans to live sporting events and concerts once a vaccine is released. On Wednesday, Pfizer updated its vaccine efficacy, saying it is 95 percent effective and is seeking clearance soon. Earlier in the week, Moderna announced its vaccine also was 95 percent effective.Ticketmaster says it has discussed the idea of using a person’s vaccine status as a possible barometer of protection for admittance into events. In an email, the company said, “In short, we are not forcing anyone to do anything. Just exploring the ability to enhance our existing digital ticket capabilities to offer solutions for event organizers that could include testing and vaccine information with 3rd party health providers. Just a tool in the box for those that may want to use.”Here is how Ticketmaster says it might work: People who wanted to attend an event would upload their vaccine status through an app that connects to a third-party health care provider. That company would store the information and keep all other details private, abiding by HIPAA laws, according to Ticketmaster. That provider would then mark that person’s status so they could present their digital ticket along with their vaccine status at the event.Ticketmaster says this would not be mandatory, noting “Ticketmaster does not have the power to set policies around safety/entry requirements, which would include vaccines and/or testing protocols. That is up to the discretion of the event organizer. Ticketmaster continues to work with event organizers on all COVID safety measures and it will be up to each event organizer to set future requirements, based on their preferences and local health guidelines.” 1941
