SHANGHAI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- An official of one of China's top government think tanks called on Saturday for the readjustment of the nation's breakneck expansion of the auto industry as an explosion of new cars on China's roads aggravates problems with pollution and congestion.Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, told a forum that the government should shift its guidance to automakers from mere pursuit of output capacity to environment-friendly and energy-saving targets.Also, auto manufacturers should strengthen their safety and quality control standards, he said.Sales of domestically-manufactured autos rose 36 percent year on year to reach 13.14 million units in the months through September, as lower-priced automobiles have become more affordable for better-off Chinese people, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on Oct. 12.In fact, annual sales and production could exceed 17 million, CAAM said.Although the expansion has brought an industrial boom to the country and boosted domestic demand, it has also triggered widespread concerns over the country's energy capacity, pollution levels and notorious traffic jams.In Beijing, the increasing number of private cars, along with heavy rainfall and a spurt in holiday travel, caused a record 140 traffic jams on a single Friday evening last month. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

NAIROBI, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki met here Friday with chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature with both promising to make efforts to enhance bilateral ties.During the meeting, Chen expressed appreciation to President Kibaki and the Kenya government for the pivotal role they played in brokering peace in Sudan and the horn of Africa.Chen assured President Kibaki that China would provide the necessary support for peace and stability in the horn of Africa."Kenya, as a neighbor and the guarantor to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on Sudan, requires the support and not condemnation from the international community in her efforts to broker peace in Sudan," Chen said.The Chinese official also congratulated President Kibaki and other coalition government partners for the passage and promulgation of the country's new constitution.She thanked Kenya's support for the One-China policy.The two also exchanged views on enhancing Kenya-China cooperation under the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC).President Kibaki hailed the cordial bilateral and trade relations between the two countries which have continued to flourish through exchange visits at all levels.The Kenyan president particularly expressed gratitude to China for its immense contribution to the African country's infrastructure development over the past years.Kibaki noted with appreciation that China is today one of the leading bilateral donors to Kenya's infrastructure development with a cumulative official development assistance reaching 36.7 billion Shillings.China and Kenya have signed agreements and MOUs in various fields including technical and cultural cooperation, trade, education, health, energy, agriculture and cooperative development.
