The Food and Drug Administration is investigating an outbreak of Listeria that has killed at least one person.The FDA, CDC and public health officials are looking into ten cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections reported in Florida, Massachusetts and New York. One person has died, the only available information is that the person lived in Florida.Genome sequencing of the Listeria bacteria isolated from those infected shows the ten people in this outbreak are more likely to share a common source of infection, according to the FDA. Samples were taken from patients between August 6 and October 3.In interviews with nine of the infected people, they all reported eating Italian-style meats recently, like salami, mortadella, or prosciutto, according to the FDA.Public health investigators have not found a common type of deli meat or common supplier among the patients at this time.The patients in this outbreak range in age from 40-to-89 years old, and all of them needed to be hospitalized.Listeria can cause different symptoms, depending on the person and part of the body affected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The current spike in COVID-19 cases is stressing the testing system across the country.As the virus spreads at unprecedented rates, more Americans are seeking COVID-19 tests. But in recent days, companies that make the tests and the supplies needed for them are struggling to keep up with demand."Those companies were operating on an allocation basis, and that just means that basically everything they make is going out the door," said Kelly Wroblewski, the Director of Infectious Disease Programs at the Association of Public Health Laboratories. "There is no reserve, so there's an increased demand in a lab for testing. There's no more reagent to be had, so to meet that demand, that lab has to use a different manufacturer's test."Wroblewski adds that along with issues in getting supplies, officials are also short on human resources — there is only so much lab capacity and only so many trained people to conduct the tests.The American Clinical Laboratory Association says the surge in demand for testing means some labs could reach or exceed their current testing capacities soon — meaning it could take longer for patients to get PCR test results back.Wroblewski says that it can take currently take anywhere from 24 hours to a week to get PCR test results back.With antigen tests, patients can get results back in less than 30 minutes. There is currently enough of a supply for antigen tests, but not all facilities offer them.Both lab groups stress that COVID-19 testing is important, but patients should be strategic."There's been a lot of emphasis put on testing, but testing is only one piece of the puzzle," Wroblewski said. "It gives you some information, and if you're not going to do anything with that information — whether it be targeted closures. whether it be staying home and isolating — we're not going to stop the spread of disease."As far as getting more tests, it's going to take a while. The family of an Iowa teen killed in a fiery bus crash in western Iowa has filed a lawsuit against the Riverside Community School District.Court documents show the family of 16-year-old Megan Klindt allege the district knew there was a problem with the bus driver but did not adequately address it.The documents claim Klindt had complained to her school principal that she felt unsafe with Donald Hendricks, 74, driving the bus.Klindt and the 74-year-old driver both died when the bus caught fire in Oakland, Iowa, in December. 545

The FBI and Toledo, Ohio police are searching for a suspect in an armed bank robbery who was mistakenly released from jail earlier this week.According to the FBI, Don Woodson Ellis Jr. allegedly robbed a bank in Toledo on Monday and was arrested and held at the Lucas County Corrections Center. He was mistakenly released on Wednesday night around 10:30 p.m.At the time, he was wearing a black t-shirt, light blue shorts/jeans to the knee and white tennis shoes with dark laces.He was using the name Antwon Moore at the time of the departure from the jail. He is also considered armed and dangerous.The Lucas County Sheriff's Office said Ellis "used deception" to be released back into the community.According to the FBI, he could be in Michigan given his previous criminal record which includes pleading guilty to bank robbery and fleeing/eluding police in Monroe County.Ellis is described as a black male, 28 years old, 6-feet tall weighing 150 pounds.  983
