Thursday to talk about food insecurity among our nation’s military and veterans.San Diego County has the largest concentration of military and veterans in the world. The CEO of the company shared the group’s mission with lawmakers and how they can feed military families who don’t have enough to eat. Feeding San Diego works to serve thousands of people through food rescue. The organization gathers quality food that would typically go to waste. “Last year we rescued 24 million pounds of food that was going to leave the food system, and go to the waste system, from stores, farms, manufacturers and other sources,” says CEO Vince Hall. The hearing examined the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs programs that provide nutrition assistance to nearly 20 million veterans across the country. According to the San Diego County Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, 1.2 million residents are associated with the military. That’s 37 percent of the population. Feeding San Diego serves local veterans and military members through an initiative called “Feeding Heroes.” It reaches local families and veterans on or near base, in military housing, and public schools serving students of military families. Dana Henderson, with Feeding San Diego, says the high cost of living in the county is a big reason for food insecurity. “What they are receiving is just not enough to make ends meet.” She goes on to say, “People on a daily basis are having to make those tough decisions between a nutritious meal or paying other types of expenses.”Over 2.3 million meals were distributed to veteran and military families through Feeding San Diego last year. 1818

Next to a traffic sign, he says, "the weed was literally growing this high all around this."While some may be used to the weeds sprouting from Mission Blvd. medians, Huntington said he can't ignore the eyesore anymore. "I don't think anyone wants to see their beach look like this when the come to visit it," Huntington said.So the mortgage loan officer has been cleaning up the medians in his spare time. He first uses a weed wacker to cut down the brush, then rakes out the weeds, and finally sweeps and cleans them up. He's been posting his progress on social media. And it's not just Mission Beach.Clairemont Lutheran Church is doing similar work, organizing volunteers to clean up overgrown medians.Huntington has complained to the city and is frustrated with their response. But officials tell us they are trying to make this issue a priority.The mayor's allocated over a million dollars for vegetation and brush abatement in the current fiscal year. With that money the city has cleaned up weeds on 42 miles of median, completing more than 200 requests since July 1. The city blames excessive weed and vegetation growth to the wet winter and spring. Huntington plans to tackle other areas of the city, and says he'd be pleasantly surprised if the city beats him to it. 1646

The businessman decided to collect and donate hundreds of thousands of airline miles in hopes of reuniting families."Just wanted to get to my brother for the holidays. I haven't seen him in a year or so," said Trey Ramsay.In his entry, Trey called his brother "the closest person in my life," adding the family hasn't been able to visit Joe since he arrived in San Diego. San Diegan Rhys Ford, a mystery writer who travels for her job, donated 45,000 miles and two tickets."It's seeing people reuniting. It's the fact that somebody's so excited to get on a plane. For me, it's able being able to give that to somebody," said Ford.All entries were put to a public vote on the website, Imgur. Trey's entry was among the handful to win plane tickets."Surprise and very thankful," said Trey."Just ecstatic, joy and shock," added Ramsay. He's already mapped out the holiday itinerary, which includes hiking, Hodad's, disc golf and some sightseeing."It means the world, especially this time of year ... not being alone. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report is looking into why there is a shortage of homes for sale around the country. According to the report by NerdWallet, in October of 2017, the US had a 3.9-month supply of existing homes for resale, meaning at that pace, it would have taken 3.9 months to sell all the homes on the market. According to NerdWallet, a supply under six months places home buyers at a disadvantage. The report identifies six reasons why the housing supply is so low. 1. Boomers aren’t movingOver three-fourths of baby boomers own their own homes, according to the report, meaning millennials don’t have enough homes available to buy. The report also found that rising home prices force baby boomers to stay put because they don’t have the cash to downsize. RELATED: California gas tax set to increase July 12. Landlords won’t sellNerdWallet says millions of single-family homes were converted to rentals after the foreclosure crisis. In 2017, renters made up 36 percent of households. A greater demand for homes coupled with less supply means values rise while rents are rising faster than home prices. 3. Low mortgage rates The report points out that interest rates on outstanding mortgages averaged about 3.8 percent over the last three years. As mortgage rates rise, fewer people are interested in selling and getting into new mortgages. 4. Entry-level homes ignored by buildersIn the first nine months of 2017, nearly 500,000 newly-built homes were sold of which 55 percent sold for 0,000 or more. Regulations add costThe report points out the homebuilders say environmental protection, infrastructure fees and rules that specify lot sizes all add tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of building every single home. Owners want a restricted supplyFinally, the report found that local zoning and land-use regulations are enacted by officials elected by the people. The report says those officials are only responding to constituents who want a limit on the number of homes that can be built in a neighborhood. Elected officials can also set a minimum square footage for homes, further limiting supply. “There are regulations that are more about the neighbors’ sensibilities than they are about the safety of the people living in the houses,” says Miriam Axel-Lute, associate director of the National Housing Institute. “It’s neighbors who want their property values to go up, in most cases, who are insistent upon some excess safety design standards or minimum lot sizes or other things,” Lute says. “They either want their property values to go up or they don’t want, quote, ‘the wrong sort of people’ in their neighborhoods. This is the pressure behind a lot of the most damaging regulations out there.” 3097

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing number of young San Diegans are still having symptoms several weeks or months after getting COVID-19. At UC San Diego, doctors are tracking and treating these so called long-haulers. Some health experts are now saying that the long-haul patient population may become a public health crisis of its own.When Jennica Harris in San Marcos got the coronavirus in March, she expected to bounce right back. Yet, weeks turned into months. “I'm 33 and healthy and young. [I work] out. [I] worked out while I was pregnant [with] lifting weights. High intensity workouts and here I am [with] this slew of doctors that I have to go see and try to figure out why my [heart rate] is so high. I can’t move from the couch and I can’t breathe two months after, three months, and four months after [getting COVID-19],” she told ABC10 News on Tuesday.Nine months after testing positive, the mother of two still battles severe shortness of breath. She's considered a long-hauler, one of the growing number of post-COVID-19 patients who suffer long after testing positive. “I was so angry for so long because I would see people outside partying when I could barely walk two feet to my window,” she added.“We already have several dozen patients and we're starting to get in outside referrals,” said UC San Diego’s Dr. Lucy Horton on Tuesday. She’s working with a team of specialists to treat local long-haulers. Many are in their 20s, 30s and 40s with no underlying conditions and many were never sick enough to be hospitalized when they first got the virus.Dr. Horton told ABC10 News that the cause of ongoing symptoms remains unclear. She said that it could be an auto-immune or overactive inflammatory response but there’s no one treatment available. She added that many of her patients have been ill for months. “What's really challenging as a physician in this situation is that we honestly don't know so when patients ask me, ‘Am I going to be sick for the rest of my life?’ I don't know if they’re going to be sick for the rest of their life,” she told ABC10 News.Dr. Horton and Harris encourage young people to continue taking virus safety measures seriously. “I just say that the decisions you make, make sure that you can live with those decisions,” added Harris. 2288
