The House on Thursday passed a health care package that included several bipartisan bills to lower drug costs, but without the support of most Republicans because it also included legislation to strengthen Obamacare.The vote was 234-183. For instance, it would ban brand name drug makers from paying generic rivals to delay bringing their lower-cost products to market and would make it easier for generic drug makers to get the samples they need to make their versions.But the legislation would also reverse President Donald Trump's extension of short-term insurance plans, which don't have to adhere to all of Obamacare's rules, so they can reject people with preexisting conditions or charge them higher premiums. The administration last year made these policies more attractive by extending their terms to just under a year, instead of three months. Also included is a measure to restore funding for outreach and assistance during Obamacare's open enrollment period that the President has slashed since taking office.The drug reform bills passed the committee with unanimous bipartisan votes, but the Obamacare provisions were approved on strict party-line votes, according to a senior Republican House aide.The White House also took issue with the combined bills, noting in a statement of administration policy that it contains "positive steps called for by the President to lower drug prices" but also measures that would limit Americans' health insurance choices and coverage. The Bombacinos and their son, AJ, have learned a lot the past eight years."We were thrown into this world of special needs feeding that we never really expected," mother Julie Bombacino says. When AJ was only 6 months old, he had a 45-minute seizure. It was then that doctors placed a feeding tube in his stomach and prescribed him formula. But his reaction to the formula created a new kind of problem. "Those first five, six months of him being on a feeding tube, it was constant nausea and vomiting and constipation for him, and he was just miserable," Julie says. "He also wasn't growing like he was supposed to be, and we were miserable, and we were scared."So the Bombacinos started researching and found a community that was blending whole food instead of formula.Brian Liebenow is one of those people using whole food. "Probably 2012 up [until] now, I've been blending my food," he says.Liebenow is an Air Force veteran, who travels the world. But back in 2003, doctors found lymphoma in his tonsils, leading to rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. Now, he's cancer-free, but the radiation severely damaged his jawbone. "The last jaw surgery I had in 2009 cut a nerve, and I wasn't able to swallow again after that," Liebenow says. As someone who had been able to eat whatever he wanted for a majority of his life, he wasn't ready to trade in steak and vegetables for formula. So, he started taking a blender to restaurants and feeding himself pureed food through his tube. He became an advocate for what's known as a "blenderized" diet, and another inspiration for the Bombacinos to make a difference in the feeding-tube world. "We're both from big Italian families; we love to eat," Tony Bombacino says. The Association of American Universities has released results of a survey they conducted looking into the sexual assault and sexual misconduct climate on college campuses.The survey is a follow-up to the organization's campus climate survey in 2015 and campus activities survey in 2017, and on a much larger scale. According to the AAU, 181,752 students participated in the survey from 33 colleges and 32 AAU member schools. In 2015, they had 150,072 respondents.Of the students surveyed in the 2019 study, nearly 60 percent were undergraduate students while 40 percent were graduate and professional students. Of those surveyed, 53 percent were from private institutions while 47 percent were from public. The survey also states that is has "one of the largest sample sizes of self-identified transgender, non-binary, and other TGQN students ever studied."Key findings from the study include:– The overall rate of non-consensual sexual contact by physical force or inability to consent since a student enrolled was 13 percent, with rates higher for women and transgender, genderqueer and non-binary people, than men.– In the case of the 21 schools who participated in 2015 and 2019, the rate of non-consensual sexual contact by physical force or inability to consent increased to 26.4 percent for undergrad women, 10.8 percent for graduate or processional women and 6.9 percent for undergraduate men"The survey found significant levels of sexual misconduct on campus, disparities in the prevalence of sexual misconduct among different categories of students, and changes from the 2015 results in student knowledge about sexual misconduct," the survey says.According to the report, women and people who identity as TGQN see sexual assault and other misconduct at the school as more problematic than men do.In addition, 77 percent of undergraduate women say that it is at least "somewhat" problematic at their school, while 72 percent of graduate women say the same.
