SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Fire crews continued mopping up what was left of the Willow Fire in Rancho San Diego Thursday, as they remain on high alert during this Red Flag Warning.One home was destroyed in the brush fire, while six others were damaged when the flames, pushed by wind quickly moved up a hillside to Willow Glen Drive Wednesday.The fire prompted evacuations. Neighbors told ABC 10News they were scrambling to get out in the middle of the night, unsure of what to grab."I happened to be on scene first with our fire chief and it was about five acres when I first got here and quickly grew, and was in the backyards of some of these homes in 5 to 10 minutes," said Andy Lawler, San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief.Crews were able to quickly gain control of the flames, making airdrops when safe, and saving homes — despite the wind working against them.Over in San Marcos, the Sycamore Fire grew to three acres Thursday afternoon but firefighters were ready to attack it from all angles.Fire departments across San Diego County have upped their staffing and remain on high alert for the next few days."We have dedicated crews on these brush rigs so they have a quicker response throughout the city of San Diego," San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief R.J. Hartman said. "We have an additional helicopter that's available."Fire crews are asking the public to have an evacuation plan prepared and belongings ready to go, including any medications, important documents, pictures, or anything important to evacuees. 1533

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Demonstrators gathered Friday outside San Diego Police Department's headquarters and marched through the streets downtown in protest of the Wisconsin shooting of Jacob Blake.Sky10 was live overhead as protesters marched through the streets, some carrying flags, to demonstrate. The gathering occurred on the same day as the March on Washington in the nation's capital, where thousands rallied on the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.SDPD shut down Broadway and E Street between 14th and 15th streets, on the north and south sides of downtown SDPD headquarters in preparation for the protest. A flyer for the demonstration advertised the event as being in solidarity with protesters in Kenosha, Wisc., where Blake, a 29-year-old unarmed Black man, was shot seven times in the back by a police officer on Aug. 23.Officers have not said what led up to the shooting, but video shot by a neighbor shows Blake walking to an SUV and attempting to enter it moments before an officer grabs him by the shirt and shoots him.Blake is reportedly paralyzed from his wounds and recovering in a hospital.Sky10 video showed one individual being detained by police during the gathering. Police say they stopped a vehicle following the crowd after it ran at least one red light. During the stop, SDPD said the crowd also stopped and a suspect from the crowd "sprayed a chemical irritant spray at a line of officers."Four people were arrested, according to police: one for battery on an officer and resisting arrest with violence, and the remaining three for resisting/obstructing officers. SDPD later added that two people were arrested for shining a laser at officers and a police helicopter. Three more people were arrested later in the night, according to police. They said someone punched an officer and when police were in the process of arresting that person, two other people tried to interfere. All were arrested. 1967

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Detainees inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center can reportedly no longer make phone calls to certain immigrants' rights activists. “Quite frankly, I'm outraged that a U.S. federal agency (ICE) would cut off communication,” said Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Mensing told ABC10 News on Tuesday that his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants’ rights activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance.“Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people,” he added.The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire in recent months for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside, as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.In May, Salvadoran Carlos Escobar-Mejia became the first detainee in U.S. custody to die after testing positive for the virus. His funeral was held last week.ICE contractor CoreCivic operates the facility.When asked Tuesday about blocking calls, CoreCivic replied, “We took this action at the direction of our government partner. We encourage you to reach out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more information on their rationale for this decision.”On Tuesday, a spokesperson for ICE sent ABC10 News the following statement:“Due to safety concerns for all detainees in custody, ICE has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility. ICE takes very seriously the safety and well-being of those in our care and will take all necessary steps in order to ensure the continued safety of both detainees and staff.
