A study released on Wednesday claims that a small number of people are taking antibiotics designed for fish leading to dangerous unintended consequences. Co-author Brandon Bookstaver, Pharm.D., director of residency and fellowship training at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, released a statement expressing concern over the trend. “While human consumption of fish antibiotics is likely low, any consumption by humans of antibiotics intended for animals is alarming,” Bookstaver said. “Self-medication and the availability of antibiotics without healthcare oversight might contribute to increasing antimicrobial resistance and delayed appropriate treatment. We were particularly concerned that the high volume of positive feedback on the comments about human use might encourage others to attempt to use these drugs.”What makes fish antibiotics unique is that its available over the counter. A bottle of 30 tablets sell for as low as .99 online, the study found. The study found that 55 out of 2,288 interviewed admitted to taking fish antibiotics. But what concerned Michael Ganio, ASHP Director of Pharmacy Practice and Quality, is that the fish pills have the same look as human antibiotics. “What might seem like a less expensive, easier way to treat an assumed infection can ultimately have very serious negative consequences,” said Ganio. “Unlike antibiotics for humans or other animals, these medications are completely unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Even if the pills look the same, it’s impossible to know that medications purchased in this manner contain what the label says and are safe for humans. Antibiotics, like all medications, should be dispensed from a licensed pharmacy after a diagnosis and prescription from a medical professional.” 1807

A proposed bill introduced by Missouri Rep. Andrew McDaniel would require all Missouri state residents to own an AR-15 rifle. House Bill 1108, or the McDaniel Militia Act, proposes that every resident of the state of Missouri "shall own at least one AR-15 rifle."A resident, the language in the proposed bill states, is someone who is "18 years of age or older and under 35 years of age" who is not prohibited by law from possessing a fire arm. "Any person who qualifies as a resident on August 28, 2019, and who does not own an AR-15 shall have one year to purchase an AR-15. Any resident qualifies as a resident after August 28, 2019, and does not own an AR-15 shall purchase an AR-15 no later than one year after qualifying as a resident," language in the bill states. After spending 602 days in the shelter before finally being adopted, Patches, an American bulldog, was returned to the Ashtabula County (Ohio) Animal Protective League Thursday. The American bulldog spent more than a year and a half at the shelter and required a very specific household. Ashtabula County APL thought that Patches had found the perfect fit when he was adopted in September, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. Due to his extended time in a shelter, Patches does not do well with other animals. The shelter previously thought he would do well in a home with no male dogs or children, but have learned now that he doesn’t do well with any other animals or children. Ashtabula County APL said that Patches needs an owner with patience that is willing to work with him as he adjusts to life in a home after spending such a long time in a shelter. With the holiday season upon us, the shelter said there is no better time for a miracle and they hope it comes in the form of finding the perfect home for Patches. A mother and son have taken to social media in a fight against hate.Rose Gandarilla and her son, Ruben, started the #ElPasoChallenge on Twitter with a simple idea in mind: spread kindness during a time of hate and violence.Gandarilla, a school administrator, wrote on Twitter that her son came to her with an idea. A team of St. Lucie County firefighters went above and beyond to help an elderly man in need.According to the St. Lucie County Fire District, Lt. John King, Justin Harnage, and Jeremy Rouse responded to a home on in Fort Pierce, Florida, on Tuesday after an 86-year-old man fell and was unable to get up.Officials said the elderly man has trouble walking and needed help getting into his wheelchair, which was located outside on the patio.Noticing that the home didn't have a proper wheelchair ramp, the three firefighters went back to their fire station, built a wheelchair ramp out of plywood, then took it back to the elderly man's home and installed it at his front door."Acts like these, which are above and beyond the call of duty, reinforce the Fire District motto: 'Our Family Serving Yours.'" said Division Chief Aaron Shaw. 845
