SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police responded Monday after a vehicle crashed into a Chick-fil-A in Mira Mesa.The crash happened on the 10700 block of Camino Ruiz near Mira Mesa Community Park. Authorities say no one was injured.Due to the crash, the inside of the restaurant was closed for the day as a structural engineer inspected the damage. Authorities haven't said what caused the crash. 407
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New numbers show San Diego housing costs are taking up more than a third of people’s income. 57 percent of renters spend more than a third on housing and so do 40 percent of homeowners. That's the result of the annual Equinox Project released Thursday by the Center for Sustainable Energy in San Diego.Mikaella Bolling, the project’s manager says it boils down to supply and demand.“A lot of people say well we don't want development in my neighborhood or we don't want infill development in our neighborhood, but this is actually the solution that's going to allow us to have more affordable units,” she said.She points to the need for more partnerships to bridge the gaps and educate the public. “We need to have a better conversation between our residents, between our policymakers, and between our developers,” she said.The cost of a median single-family home in the county jumped 6.5 percent from 2016 to 2017. It’s now upwards of 5,000.“We're seeing that increase every year. Great for homeowners...but not great for buyers,” Bolling added. Krysta Cordill is a certified financial planner with D’Arcy Capital in Carmel Valley.“There's really no magic to it,” she said. “You have to make saving for a home a priority.” Cordill is a past president of the San Diego Financial Planners Association and has seen more clients worry about whether they can afford the high cost of living. “If you have a Roth Ira or traditional IRA, they allow you to take ,000 of that penalty-free for first-time home-buyers," Cordill said. She says people should consider starting in a condo or townhouse. “Just know that that's part of the process of home ownership,” Cordill said. As for saving, she offered up some simple tricks. “I've never talked to anyone who cannot pair down their expenses,” she said. First, she suggests cutting out easy online spending. Instead, say to yourself, ‘If I really need it, I'm going to go to the store.’”Cordill also suggests that you make your morning cup of coffee at home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Navy Region Southwest has a brand new, state of the art headquarters on land that was recently a barren lot, and they didn’t have to pay for it.The 15-acre plot sits on Pacific Highway near the USS Midway and has been owned by the Navy for about a hundred years. Navy Region Southwest Executive Director Joe Stuyvesant said it was once a hub for ships.“Ships would come in and refuel, replenish, resupply so it was mostly supply warehousing and things that were here,” he said.RELATED: Massive biotech hub planned for San Diego's waterfrontEventually, ships stopped coming to the area and instead stopped at other nearby bases. The warehouses that were built remained, and the Navy turned those into office buildings. Now, just one warehouse stands. This is the old building for Navy offices and will soon be torn down now that the new headquarters opened in October.Stuyvesant estimated the cost of their new building at around 5,000,000, explaining the deal they made so the Navy did not have to pay for the facility.“In return for leasing that land to the developer, they would build the Navy a new headquarters building,” he said.Manchester Financial Group signed a lease on the land in 2006, agreeing to fund the 17-story, 373,000-square-foot building. The inside of the building features historic Navy photos, offices, conference space, a gym for employees, and the oceanfront view. A restaurant for the public will also be added to the first floor.Construction on the new Navy facility started in 2018 and ended in 2020. Now, the last remaining warehouse that once housed the Navy offices is set to be torn down.“It really as underutilized and frankly not an attractive parcel to be really on the front doorstep of San Diego,” said Stuyvesant.Earlier in 2020, Manchester sold part of the lot to IQHQ, which is currently building a science hub. Manchester still holds part of the property and plans to build a hotel and plaza on that space.Stuyvesant said this deal is a win-win because the Navy got a new facility that they would not otherwise be able to fund, and the city will benefit from a nicer view and the taxes that come from the property.“The money that we have for facilities really needs to be focused on building piers, building electrical infrastructure, building hangars for the aircrafts, repairing runways,” said Stuyvesant. 2377
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parents aren’t the only ones trying to figure out the new school year. Teachers are in the same boat, also dealing with the emotions of not being able to go back to the classroom right away.ABC 10News is following four teachers throughout the new school year, as they navigate the ups and downs this strange time brings.Dawn Harrison is a first grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Teaching is her passion."One of my favorite things is the lightbulb moment when they’re in the process of learning something and it clicks for them and you’re there to witness that click,” Harrison said. “I love their hugs. I love hearing about their day.”That personal interaction is gone for now with teachers preparing to go virtual for the new school year. For Harrison, with no biological children of her own, she views her students as her own children.“It’s devastating, not to get their hugs, their wanting to hold your hand, even the tugging on your shirt,” Harrison said.On top of the emotional connection, there are other questions when it comes to teaching first grade. “How am I going to teach six-year-olds to read via a computer? How am I going to teach them to think mathematically through a computer?” she asked.Harrison’s challenges are different than what her husband faces. Rick Meads is a teacher at Eastlake High School. With the older students, they are much more technologically savvy. “They’re going to be a lot more easily adapted,” he said.He teaches digital media, drama, and theater. He, along with so many other teachers and students, felt the sadness of having to cancel big school events. “The worst part was we were supposed to mount a major production at the school with the theater class and we had to cancel that. That was very disappointing for a lot of the kids,” Meads said.With the Sweetwater Union High School District starting Monday, Meads is preparing to adapt all of his lesson plans. For his classes, like drama and theater, he is going to focus on writing for the beginning of the school year. “In the past, we have written full-scale musicals [and] we’ve done plays,” he said.Kelly Martin is a sixth grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She also faced unique challenges going online with her students.“With adolescents, it’s a little different. Nobody wants to turn their camera on. No one wants to talk in front of anyone, everyone has their hoods on, so getting them engaged is a different challenge,” Martin said.All the teachers are struggling on when it is safe to go back. “I think there is a misconception that teachers don’t want to go back to school. We all want to go back to school,” Martin said.With roughly 3,000 students at Eastlake High School, Meads sees the challenge of how to keep students social distant.For Gina Chavez, a fourth and fifth grade teacher in the South Bay Union School District, she wants to know that students and teachers will be protected.“I want to know that we’re provided with PPE (sic). I want to know that we are going to have our classrooms sanitized,” Chavez said.She wants parents to know that there is a lot going on behind the scenes that many people don’t realize. “I’m in the middle of an eight-week course helping me to get better at teaching online,” Chavez said.“Somebody recently told me they’re calling it a ‘Coronacoaster’, and I think it’s really a good expression of how we’re feeling,” Martin added. 3463

We’re having so much fun watching them. It’s nice to be able to brag for once," said fellow fan Mike Hernandez.In 2020, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado each were among the top contenders for the MVP award and pitcher Dinelson Lamet was in the running for the CY Young Award as the best pitcher in the National League.
