"Forest health experts help identify areas where Christmas trees can be cut, opening up forage for wildlife and allowing the remaining trees to grow larger."According to the Forest Service, there are specific guidelines to follow, including having your permit on you at all times. Built decades ago, it’s a main thoroughfare that connects the eastern and western parts of the Arkansas city.It also separates the northern parts of the city from the southern.“It’s a very self-consciously created segregated city,” said Dr. John Kirk, distinguished professor of history at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. "The white population is mainly concentrated to the north and the west, and the black population is very much concentrated to the east and the south.”Even though Jim Crow segregation ended in the 1960s, Little Rock still finds itself battling separation. The demographics are nearly equal parts black and white, yet the disparity can be seen in the affluent northern neighborhoods and dilapidated southern ones.“In some ways Little Rock is not just a southern story and a local story, but a national story, too, about how racial discrimination and racial disparities function,” said Kirk.But for all the unspoken division, there is a unifying vision manifesting itself under the city’s 7th Street corridor only a few blocks away from I-630. On any given day, you might be able to find 5-10 artists painting murals of prominent Black historical figures on the drab walls that line the frequently traveled road.“[We’re] trying to brighten up the city, man,” said Jermaine Gibson, one of the many artists. “It’s been all love and positivity. People honking. They love the idea of putting color in the city.”Jermaine was putting the finishing touches on a painting that says, “Make Art Not War.” It’s one of more than 30 paintings that have gone up on the walls since George Floy’s death in Minneapolis on May 25.“We decided to create something that we knew how to do,” said Jose Hernandez, who first came up with the idea. There’s been a significant bounce back in the U.S. job market, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest monthly unemployment report. In June, 4.8 million people were able to go back to work.Businesses in hospitality and leisure added 2.1 million jobs. Food services and drinking establishments added 1.5 million jobs, while retail saw 740,000 workers return to work.“The job market bounced back pretty strongly in June, but we have to keep everything into perspective,” said Ryan Sweet, an economist and Head of Monetary Policy and Research for Moody’s Analytics.Sweet says compared to where the U.S. was prior to the pandemic, jobs are still down by roughly 15 million.Economists, like Sweet, believe the job rebound seen in June is likely over, and the U.S. job market will likely reflect a lull in July.“The lull, it is unclear how long that will last,” Sweet said. “We are hoping until the end of this year.”As coronavirus cases continue to surge in the U.S., the hope for just a lull dwindles and worry about another decline in employment grows.Companies like United and American airlines are already signaling major job loss could come in the near future. Both companies recently reported they may have to each layoff 25,000 workers. Analysts predict if other airlines have to do the same, the industry could lose up to 250,000 jobs.That’s hundreds of thousands of potential jobs lost in just one industry, and many others are signaling a similar situation.“The ones that I am most nervous about are state and local governments because it seems that there is less urgency for lawmakers to pass fiscal stimulus,” said Sweet. “If we don’t get another round of fiscal stimulus, this lull is going to turn into a contraction.”Congress has been talking for two months about another stimulus package, but there is no clear signal that one will come in time. 1881
