SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Saturday marks the end to the San Diego Zoo's longest closure in its 103-year history. For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shutdown in mid-March, the zoo is back open. Visitors were happy to return to one of our city's jewels, even with some changes.For the last three months, visitors have been anxious to come to the grand reopening on Saturday."The turtles are kind of big and funny," laughed little Kitara. The grade-schooler celebrated her birthday two days ago, and Saturday was her first big outing since.The zoo has made some modifications to operations and guest rules:Face coverings are required for all guests over two years of agePeople must practice social distancingThere are limited dining and shopping, overall reduced park hoursOperating at 50% guest capacityLimited guest parkingMembers and guests will not be allowed to leave the parks and re-enter on the same dayOne-way path adjustments, plexi-glass, and barriers to help guests navigate safelyIncreased number of hand-washing and sanitizing locationsRobust cleaning routineThroughout the park, staff members will guide people to move along to discourage crowding."I think they help people maintain social distancing really well," pass holder, Valerie Warren said. "They're very informative, and have all sorts of information for everybody on where to go and what to do, so I think they're doing an amazing job."The most significant change guests may see is at the primates exhibit."It can affect some of our animals," Sofia Springer, the zoo's Operations Manager said.Scientists say primates have been known to catch some human respiratory illnesses. Their immunity to COVID-19 is not certain. But the zoo isn't taking any chances."We've provided barriers and one-way pathways to keep the guests from getting too close to those areas."But there are many other exhibits where you can get up close to the animals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Residents in a South San Diego Apartment complex worked together to fight a fire that started in the patio.At around 10:45 Sunday morning, San Diego City Fire Rescue teams responded to the 1700 block of Oro Vista Road. Heavy smoke was billowing from the patio of a downstairs apartment. "I called 911 automatically, and that's when the person who lives upstairs came running out,” Alexa Delgado said.Delgado had just arrived at the Oro Vista Villas to visit her mother when she saw the flames. "It started popping, and the fire started coming out,” she said. It was in that moment of chaos that she found herself and several neighbors step up to help. One neighbor pulled the smoke alarm, others smashed fire extinguisher boxes and started spraying down the patio, and she protected the neighbor's pet birds, all before the fire department arrived. Engine 30’s Fire Captain, John Wilson said what the residents did in the first minutes of the fire helped suppress the flames. "There was an alarm that was going off upon our arrival, so the smoke detectors did their jobs and got everyone out safely,” Captain Wilson said. Delgado says what happened today was a true testament to the word “community.”“A bunch of neighbors helping and asking if anyone living there, went upstairs to see if anyone was in there and helping out."Fire investigators are still looking into what exactly caused the patio fire.  No one was inside the home when the flames ignited. Fishermen on the “Prowler” were on their way back from Mexican Waters when their boat collided with a mega-yacht, the "Attessa IV" Friday night. One of the survivors on the Prowler spoke exclusively with 10News about his experience. It was supposed to be a fun overnight fishing trip for father-son duo Hung and Ken Ngo. On and off rain Saturday morning had event organizers making tough decisions to cancel, while others decided to keep their events going, rain or shine. The Street Medicine Clinic for the Homeless at Balboa Park was canceled due to heavy rain Saturday morning. But the Northpark Arts Festival went on despite some sprinkles. By the afternoon, the clouds moved to the south, and thousands enjoyed the festival. 479

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A wall at the intersection of Ocean View and 30th in the Logan Heights neighborhood of San Diego has been turned from a place with frequent unwanted graffiti, to a work of art that embraces the community.David Mena said he and about seven artists have been painting the wall for about a month and it’s finally completed. It’s a celebration of the different types of people who live in the area, plus a look at the different cultures and ethnicities. From a depiction of the “tortilla lady” to the mascots from local schools, the art captures the spirit of a wide variety of types of people and brings a message of unity.“This is our peaceful protest and letting the community and everyone in San Diego county know that in these destructive times, we can build and we can move forward as a unit,” said Meno.He said he recruited youth in the area to help with the art as a way to inspire them and show them a positive influence.Mena said close to ,000 was donated by the community to help pay for supplies and food during the project. They put a coat over the paint that will help prevent graffiti. He said they’re not asking for money, but if anyone donated, he would give the money to the young artists. 1240
