NEW YORK — Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the passage of legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from possessing handguns and long guns as part of his 2018 Women's Agenda.Previously, there was a loophole in which domestic abusers only had to surrender handguns, they must now surrender all firearms."The recent wave of mass shootings is horrifying, and the federal government's failure to act on any form of meaningful gun safety laws is unconscionable," Governor Cuomo said. "New York is once again leading the way to prevent gun violence, and with this common sense reform, break the inextricable link between gun violence and domestic violence.This legislation builds on our gun laws -- already the strongest in the nation-- to make New York safer and stronger." New York law previously prohibited the possession of firearms for those convicted of a felony or a limited number of misdemeanor "serious" offenses. This legislation expands the list of "serious" crimes, which will lead to the loss of a gun license and the surrender of all firearms for those who are convicted.This legislation will also restrict any individual with an arrest warrant from obtaining or renewing a firearm license which was previously not the case.Governor Cuomo cites the fact that in nine of the last 10 mass shootings, the shooter had an existing record of committing or threatening violence against women or harassing them. 1447

NEW YORK (AP) — Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens, and Barry Bonds are the leading candidates returning to baseball's Hall of Fame ballot in a year without any favorites among the new names. Schilling was third behind Derek Jeter and Larry Walker with 278 of 397 votes last year, finishing at 70% and 20 votes shy in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Clemens had 242 votes for 61% and Bonds 241 for 60.7%. Pitchers Barry Zito, Tim Hudson, Mark Buehrle, and A.J. Burnett, and outfielder Torii Hunter are among the top newcomers on the ballot.To get into the Hall of Fame, you must receive 75% of the votes.According to the Associated Press, Bonds and Clemens were favorites to get into the Cooperstown, but since they have been suspected of steroid use, the likelihood of getting in is diminishing. NEW YORK -- A time of year with so much light and happiness feels a bit different this year.“Oh I thought Christmas was canceled... Are you saying it’s still on?” New York sculptor Jim Rennert said.Rennert says humor is what gets him through difficult times, like when he had a bike accident.“I broke my collarbone, separated my shoulder, took me 45 minutes to get up," Rennert said. "I was chuckling on the ground about it; that’s how I deal with stress.”He hopes to bring that humor to others this holiday season through his work.“Bringing a little bit of light, a little bit of levity, having something that people can smile about, even if it’s for a moment as they’re walking down the street and they see one of my sculptures goes a long way right now,' Rennert said.The weekend before Christmas, quite a few of Rennert’s sculptures were installed across New York City.“You can’t go to museums, you can’t go to art galleries freely like you could before – they’re limited on their hours and their attendance – so why not put the work out and allow people to enjoy it on the street,” Rennert said.Each sculpture resonates with people in the business world. He was part of that world as a stockbroker before he found his calling as an artist at the age of 34.“I just went back to what I had been thinking about all those experiences in business that were challenging, and I found out there was an audience for that. NEW YORK CITY — A New York City mom allegedly threw her newborn son out of a bathroom window, District Attorney Melinda Katz said Tuesday. Sabina Dookram, 23, was charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment.“This is a heartbreaking situation," Katz said. "A newborn baby has suffered greatly because of the alleged actions of his mother, who now faces serious charges and a lengthy prison sentence."A neighbor heard crying sounds on Sunday morning, officials said. When she went outside, she found a naked newborn boy on the ground next to the building's garbage. Responding officers found blood on the ground, on the side wall leading up to the bathroom window and on the window sill. The baby was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Katz said. He was placed on a ventilator. Doctors determined he suffered a traumatic brain injury with bleeding and swelling about the brain and scalp and an abdominal injury with internal bleeding.Dookram gave birth on Saturday afternoon, prosecutors said she told officers."I cut the cord with a scissor from the bathroom," Dookram said according to court documents. "I panicked and threw it out of the bathroom window. I did not check on the baby, I put my clothes in the laundry hamper in the bathroom, I showered and went to sleep.”Dookram faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
