(KGTV)- UC San Diego Health has had a goal to increase testing since the start of this pandemic, according to Dr. David Pride, the Associate Director of Microbiology. Now, UCSD Health has started using a new testing strategy; pool testing.“We’ve really been thinking about what is it that we can do to sort of extend testing in the San Diego region,” said Pride. “Pooling is absolutely a strategy, for example, that employers can use on their employees that universities can use, for example, on their students.”As the nation faces another COVID-19 testing supply shortage, Pride said this could be one solution to conserving the current supply.“Pool testing works by taking a group of individuals and placing all of their specimens together,” he said.Instead of using one test per person, samples from several people are collected and tested together. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends pool testing to be used only when the positive rate is low enough to justify pooling.“If that pool tests negative, then you can call each individual that was in that pool negative,” said Pride. If the pool tests positive, then each person is retested individually.“We test a lot of different patient populations, so we know what the prevalence of disease is in those patient populations, and we’ve chosen to use those with the lowest prevalence of disease for our pool testing,” Pride explained. He said they are currently using a five to one strategy, meaning five people per one test.“We’ve done probably somewhere around 500 to 600 so far. The majority of the batches have been negative, we’ve had less than 10 percent of the pools test positive,” Pride said, which is what his team expected.Pride said he heard positive feedback about pool testing from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).“Just a few weeks ago, we submitted our emergency use authorization to the FDA, and we think we’re probably getting fairly close to that getting approved,” he said.Soon, pride expects to start doing more pool testing, while also speeding up the process.“Right now, we’re really working on it in a very manual fashion,” he said. “That takes a lot of time to do, so we’re in the process of automating it by bringing in machinery to do that work that people are doing right now.” 2287

(KGTV) -- The Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station said Thursday they’ve had to ask people to stop donating after receiving an overwhelming amount of donations for the Holy Fire.According to a post on the station’s Facebook page, the donations have taken up so much space, deputies are running out of room to store the items.A photo shows boxes of snacks piled atop cases of water and Gatorade. Though the department appreciates the donations, they said they plan and prepare for events such as the Holy Fire, “so we are good!”The post went on to thank the community for their support. (KGTV) -- Many Bay Area residents woke up Wednesday to a smoky, dark orange sky as fires continue to burn in Northern California.Bay Area TV station KGO reported strong winds have blown smoke and ash from fires in the Chico area and Mendocino National Forest into San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area. The combination of weather conditions and fire has created an apocalyptic-like view across the region and poor air quality for the area.In a tweet, the National Weather Service Bay Area said: “As the winds weaken aloft, gravity will take over as the primary vertical transport of the smoke. Suspended smoke will descend closer to the surface and could lead to darker skies and worsening air quality today …” As the winds weaken aloft, gravity will take over as the primary vertical transport of the smoke.Suspended smoke will descend closer to the surface and could lead to darker skies and worsening air quality today. This is beyond the scope of our models so we rely on your reports!— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) September 9, 2020 Unprecedented amount of smoke in the atmosphere as a record number of acres burn across California & the West. A 47-year-old former model involved in a custody dispute plunged to her death from a Manhattan hotel Friday, according to three law enforcement sources.New York police found the bodies of Stephanie Nicolai and her 7-year-old son, Vincent, on a second-floor balcony of the Gotham Hotel, where the two were guests, police said. The bodies were discovered about 8:15 a.m. Friday after a 911 call about an unconscious woman and child at the 25-story boutique hotel on East 46th Street, according to police.Police believe Nicolai's death was a suicide, the law enforcement sources said. Detectives are examining video from the area and speaking with people who knew her in their quest for a motive. The pair were staying in the hotel's penthouse, according to CNN affiliate WABC.The order in which they fell to their deaths is unclear, according to one source with knowledge of the ongoing investigation.A leading theory of investigators is the possibility of a murder-suicide but the medical examiner will make a final determination, the source said.Detectives are also looking into the custody dispute between Nicolai and her estranged husband, according to the source.New York divorce lawyer Raoul Felder said he represented Nicolai in the custody dispute until about four months ago and that he had grown concerned about her."I've known her 20 years," he told CNN. "I was not only her lawyer but her friend. I could tell something was wrong. ... I just didn't know what."Felder, who said he hadn't heard from Nicolai in two or three months, said she wanted to travel to Spain with her son."I said in the middle of a divorce case, you just can't do that," he said. But the lawyer who'd represented her for about a month said he'd talked with her extensively, even on the night before she died, and "there was no indication whatsoever" that she might take her own life."We were talking about the broad strategies for her divorce," attorney Daniel Kron told CNN Saturday.Kron, who referred to his client as Stephanie Adams, said "there's a certain amount of stress" in divorce proceedings but "she seemed to be dealing with them quite well.""She was in my office almost every day," he said. "She was a very professional, high-class, thoughtful and considerate individual.""It is inexplicable to me that this happened. I cannot think of how the Stephanie I knew got to this point."William Beslow, the attorney representing the child's father, Charles Nicolai, told CNN his client believed his estranged wife was going to remove the boy from the country. He said a court this week ordered the mother to turn over Vincent's passport to a lawyer appointed to represent him."He's in mourning," Beslow said of his client. "He's distraught. The centerpiece of his life was his son. ... This guy is sweet, decent and caring."Nicolai, who used her maiden name -- Stephanie Adams -- on her website, described herself as a former model who attended Fairleigh Dickinson University. She was a fashion model, Playboy magazine's Miss November 1992, an LGBT activist and wrote "a series of astrology, new age, spiritual and metaphysical books," according to the website."She was cheerful any time I saw her -- polite, dignified," Felder said. "The boy was beautiful. Her whole life revolved around that child. She would bring him to the office. He was just a lovely little child. He used to love Spider-Man and the girls would fawn over him in the office and color with him." 3458

(KGTV) — Three of the country's biggest ticket sellers told Congressional members they would support a mandate to include all ticket fees up front for consumers, ESPN reports. The current industry standard is to reveal those "all-in" fees to consumers only after they input their personal information, including name, address, and email address, ESPN says. The practice has been called anti-consumer and deceptive by Congressional members.Amy Howe, Ticketmaster's chief operating officer, told the House Committee on Energy and Commerce that the total ticket price "should be disclosed from the outset, not at the end of the purchase process."Representatives from Stubhub and AXS also said the companies would support "all-in" pricing. Stubhub's general counsel Stephanie Burns told the committee that the company tried the pricing strategy in 2014 and 2015, but moved away from it because consumers found it confusing when competitors' prices appeared lower in search engines online.Committee chairman Frank Pallone, D-N.J., said he was particularly concerned about higher fees sneaking up on consumers."Millions of Americans shop on the internet for tickets," Pallone said. "In some ways, the internet has made this experience more convenient, but it has also led to consumers being ripped off as they try to navigate a ticketing industry that for too long has operated in the dark."Representatives from the three companies also touched on deceptive websites and venues holding back tickets to increase scarcity. The companies, however, argued over the ease for consumers to digitally transfer tickets regardless of the original site used to purchase tickets.Currently, a bill in Congress known as the Better Oversight of Secondary Sales and Accountability in Concert Ticketing Act is trying to push for new standards in the ticketing industry. 1853
