The ratings for Anderson Cooper's exclusive interview with Stormy Daniels won't be available until Monday afternoon.But the outpouring of reactions suggest that her account of an alleged affair with Donald Trump in 2006 captivated viewers across the country.Several hours after the interview was broadcast, Daniels' name was still the No. 1 trending topic in the U.S. on Twitter. The adult film star was also a trending topic on Facebook.The sexual encounter allegedly happened a decade before Trump was elected president. But the apparent cover-up is much more recent."For us, it wasn't so much 'there was an affair.' That's not as much the headline. For us, it's everything that has happened since and how we've gotten to this point," Cooper said in an interview for CBSNews.com about his sit-down with Daniels."I think there's more to come on this story. I'm not saying necessarily on Stormy Daniels' aspect of the story, but on the methods that were used to keep her silent," Cooper told CBSNews.com. "If Stormy Daniels' story is true that a thug came up to her in a parking lot in Las Vegas in 2011 -- this is long before Donald Trump was a presidential candidate -- I mean, if somebody is using intimidation tactics, physical intimidation tactics, it's probably not the first time they've done it. So that's a potential story I would imagine people would look at: Has this kind of thing happened before? And I don't know the answer to that."The porn star's media-savvy attorney, Michael Avenatti, bluntly told Cooper, "This is about the cover-up."Sunday's "60 Minutes" broadcast marked the first time that Daniels described an alleged threat made in 2011, a few weeks after she agreed to tell a tabloid magazine about the alleged affair. (The magazine story wound up being nixed.)On the East Coast, the "60 Minutes" broadcast was delayed by an NCAA basketball game. But once the broadcast began, there was a mixture of shock, revulsion, and snark on social media -- as well as sex jokes.Some critics reacted by saying "there was no news" in the interview. But the interview itself was news -- representing Daniels' first time speaking on camera about the alleged affair, the hush money, and more. And there were new details about the alleged threat, plus her motivations for breaking her silence.Avenatti tweeted afterward: "Any claim that 'There was nothing new other than the details of the threat' is not only false but is also similar to asking 'Other than the short interruption Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?'"Daniels told Cooper that Avenatti advised her not to share any texts, photos, or other evidence of the affair for now.It "would be foolish" to share the evidence now, Avenatti tweeted. The US Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Black Lives Matter protest organizer Deray Mckesson.A Louisiana police officer had sued to hold Mckesson accountable for injuries the officer sustained in 2016 when he was hit by a heavy object.Mckesson didn't throw the object.The person who did is still unidentified.A lower court ruling had allowed the suit to move forward.Critics said the decision would dismantle the Civil Rights era precedent safeguarding the first amendment right to protest.The Supreme Court's decision wiped away the earlier ruling, sending the case back to the lower courts to further review Louisiana law.The justices ruled the case needed more guidance from state courts before important constitutional questions are considered. 758

The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation now projects that 67,000 American lives would be saved between now and December 1 by near universal wearing of masks.The IHME released the updated model on Thursday. As part of the update, the IHME said that four states, Arizona, Florida, Mississippi, and South Carolina, have hit an important metric of a daily death rate of eight per one million residents, and that those states should re-impose statewide closures of non-essential businesses.The IHME’s coronavirus projections have been frequently cited in the past by the White House’s coronavirus task force. The group uses state data along with other metrics to create projections on the number of coronavirus-related deaths throughout the US.The model projects with inconsistent use of masks, the US death toll for the coronavirus will be up to 295,000 by December 1, an increase from the current figure of 158,000, per Johns Hopkins University data. The IHME’s projections drops considerably to 228,000 if masks are worn universally outside of the home.IHME director Dr. Christopher Murray said at a news conference on Thursday that mask wearing mandates work, but communities also respond when they see cases are spreading.“People do respond to the circumstances in their community,” Murray said. “Mandates have an important effect.”One thing the model does not take into account is the use of therapeutics of a possible vaccine. Murray said that the IHME is closely monitoring the effectiveness of two potential therapeutics – remdesivir and dexamethasone – and may adjust future models as more is learned about those drugs.The model expects the number of coronavirus-related deaths to ebb and flow into the fall, but begin to increase by November. "November is a month we expect the spread to increase due to seasonality," Murray said. We are expecting considerable daily deaths. That pushes up our projections."“We expect it rise later in the fall,” Murray added.One cause for concern comes at the end of November when families begin to travel for holidays such as Thanksgiving.Murray said that while mask-wearing is not necessary when around family members of the same household, he said mask-wearing may be necessary for holiday gatherings. Murray said his family is taking the recommendation one step further, and is simply not gathering with extended relatives this fall.What’s built into the IHME’s projection is that a number of states will need to implement stricter closures in order to slow the spread. As part of the IHME’s recommendation, states implement closures of non-essential businesses when there is a threshold of eight deaths a day per million. Also part of the modeling is based on 50% of schools being closed in each state for the upcoming year. Murray said with many schools opening or implementing hybrid models, more will be learned in the coming weeks on how easily the virus spreads within schools.Recent measures in Arizona, California, Florida, and Texas has allowed a small decline in cases, but deaths in those states have not dropped off, according to Murray.“We have been seeing cases peaking and hospitalizations peaking and deaths not quite yet peaking, but we expect them to peak in the near future but we don’t expect a sharp decline," Murray said.To see a state-by-state breakdown of the IHME’s projections, click here. 3403

The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington is welcoming its newest member — a baby Lowland gorilla.On Sunday, 15-year-old Calaya gave birth to a son, Moke — "junior" or "little one" in Lingala, a language spoken in Central Africa.“The birth of this western lowland gorilla is very special and significant, not only to our Zoo family but also to this critically endangered species as a whole,” said Meredith Bastian, the National Zoo's curator of primates, according to the Smithsonian. “The primate team’s goal was to set Calaya up for success as best we could, given that she is a first-time mother. Doing so required great patience and dedication on the part of my team, and I am very proud of them and Calaya.”According to the zoo, Cayala has been adjusting well to motherhood and has learned how to care for Moke by watching other gorillas and through the help of staff. Zookeepers helped trained Cayala, in part, by showing her pictures of mother gorillas and presenting her with toys to cuddle and kiss.“This infant’s arrival triggers many emotions—joy, excitement, relief—and pride that all of our perseverance in preparing Calaya for motherhood has paid off,” said animal keeper Melba Brown. “We will provide support to her if need be, but I have every confidence that Calaya will be a great mom to Moke.
