COLUMBUS, Ohio — Border Patrol agents detained an Ohio woman for eight hours and falsely accused her of human smuggling. The woman said she and her husband were leaving a funeral in California when agents stopped them at a checkpoint.For nearly 40 hours, Reina and her husband made the 2,000-mile drive from their home in Columbus, Ohio to Calexico, California. The couple was taking in the scenic views state-by-state, "Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma until we got to California," recalled Reina.The two were attending a funeral in the border city for a family friend. However, the quick trip would turn into a frightful and long ordeal, Reina said. She would eventually be left stranded in the California desert."I said 'I'm in trouble, I have to find my way home,' " said Reina.Her troubles all began on their way home. Reina and her husband were driving up Highway 86 when they came across a toll-like booth under a white canopy. It was a Border Patrol checkpoint near the Salton Sea."I don't know if it's because we have out-of-state tags or because of what we look like, but he asked us what is our citizenship," Reina recounted. "I answered, then they asked my husband."Reina, an American of Puerto Rican descent, handed agents her passport, but it wasn't so simple for her husband. He is an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, and without the proper papers, agents detained Reina's husband and then shifted their attention to her."And he said 'Take off your jewelry.' I said 'Why?' He said, 'Cause you are being arrested.' I said, 'For what?' he said 'For smuggling,' " said Reina.Agents were accusing her of traveling to the border to smuggle her husband into the United States."He said 'You came here and picked up your husband, didn't you?' " recalled Reina.Reina said she insisted she had proof the two traveled together. She had hotel and gas receipts detailing their journey. But agents booked and fingerprinted Reina and placed her in a locked holding cell."It is freezing like an icebox in there," she said. "The benches are aluminum. The toilet is stainless steel, and there is a camera in the corner watching you."Minutes turned to hours before Reina said she was taken in for another round of questioning."He said, 'Oh I didn't know you were still here; they forgot about you,' " said Reina. The U.S. Attorney's office decided against charging Reina with smuggling. Only then was she free to go, after sitting in that cell for eight hours."I felt violated. I felt betrayed because I was an American and I have my own rights," said Reina.She was then left to find her own way home since Border Patrol agents confiscated the couple's rental car. Reina said agents dropped her off at a truck stop a few minutes up the road close to midnight.She said a manager there drove her an hour to the nearest airport. That is where she booked a 9 plane ticket home.WEWS reached out to the United States Border Patrol. They said agents followed the protocol for when someone is suspected of "alien smuggling." They also say when a person is released, it is up to them to get a ride or agents will take them to a nearby public place. 3227

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Three Coronado restaurants were closed for cleaning on Tuesday after employees tested positive for the coronavirus. One of the restaurants, The Henry, is facing backlash over accusations that it was not transparent with its patrons.On Facebook, The Henry posted the following message on Monday night.“Coronado neighbors,We apologize for not being more transparent with you about our first COVID positive case last week. Even though we messed up our communication, please know that we took all the right actions to make sure our guests, our employees and our restaurant space were as safe as possible before we re-opened.We went through our entire protocol for a COVID exposure the night after we became aware one of our employees was COVID positive. This includes third-party sanitation of the restaurant, contacting all employees before they returned to work to make sure we knew who had CDC defined exposure to the COVID employee and making sure all employees had access to testing at our cost, regardless of exposure. We got lucky that we were able to get this done so quickly. That has not always been the case. In another restaurant out-of-state, we had to close a restaurant for nearly a week as we waited for the sanitation company and sufficient staff to safely reopen. No one in our industry is happy about the fact we are all getting more experienced and better at responding to COVID exposures.Some of you have asked us why we did not notify the San Diego Health Department about the COVID positive employee. We know the employee's health care provider has notified the Health Department and that we, as employers, are not required to do so. But because of your question today and after calling the San Diego Health Department who encouraged voluntary notification, the Henry is committing to do so. With all of this in mind, this evening we notified the Health Department that we received information about a second COVID positive employee.The employee in this second case was last in the restaurant on Thursday, July 2. We are closing the restaurant early this evening and will be proceeding with sanitation and employee contacts. This time, we do not expect to be able to complete all of these procedures before our regular opening tomorrow. The Henry will be closed until we can go through our protocols, all of which mirror the San Diego Health Department's and CDC guidance.These are challenging times. Many of the comments express concern that The Henry waited until after the 4th of July holiday weekend to make notification.Nearby McP’s Irish Pub and Hide Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen were also temporarily closed for cleaning because of virus cases.On Tuesday, McP’s Irish Pub posted the following.“Good morning, For the health, safety and well-being of our valued customers, staff and community, McP’s Irish Pub will be closed beginning today to conduct a deep sanitization cleaning. This is being done per San Diego Co. Health Dept guidelines as one of our team members has tested positive for Covid19.PLEASE!PLEASE!PLEASE! be safe out there and follow what is recommended, let's all be part of the solution!See you all soon!!!”On Monday, Hide Tide Bottle Shop and Kitchen posted the following.“We will be closing today at 4:30 pm. Unfortunately, one of our staff tested positive for COVID-19. We are following the health department protocol and will be closed for a minimum of 48 hours for deep cleaning and time for all our staff to be tested. We will keep you posted. Please follow the rules! It's important! We care about you!”On Tuesday, ABC10 News asked San Diego County about whether restaurants are required to notify the public about employee cases. A spokesperson for the County wrote, "We leave it to the business, ANY business, to notify their customers. If we believe there is a risk to the public beyond that which would require further notification, we would notify the public."The County reports that medical providers are required to notify County health officials about employees who’ve tested positive. When ABC10News asked about whether restaurant employers are required to do the same, the County referred us to the state’s website which reports in part that employers should prepare to notify their local health department if there’s an outbreak or lab confirmed cases in the workplace.On Tuesday, ABC10 News asked The Henry for an interview. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Coronado residents heard a plan from the Port of San Diego Monday night that would allow for 350 new hotel rooms to be built on the island.Those who showed up were not happy.“Most of the residents don’t want this development to happen,” said resident Kelly Sarber. “The city can’t really handle what we're dealing with right now,” she added, referring to the island’s notorious traffic.The new proposal is part of an update to the Port’s master plan, which includes 2,403 acres of land across 34 miles of waterfront around San Diego Bay.In Coronado, the new master plan would allow for 350 hotel rooms to be built in the north Coronado subdistrict, which includes the Ferry Landing and the area occupied by the existing Marriot Hotel.“What this plan sets out is potential growth for next 30 years,” said Lesley Nishihira, planning director for the Port.She said currently they have not received a plan from a developer to actually build a hotel on the Ferry Landing property. However, if approved, the updated master plan would allow for one to be built eventually. Though, any project proposal would also have to go through a public review period.The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Coronavirus has been on everyone's mind this year, and it can be difficult to avoid the topic. However, there is also shame associated with a positive test result. KOAA spoke with Jessica Rodriguez when she was with her children at a local park on Tuesday. She explained how she would feel if diagnosed with coronavirus. "I think it's a little bit of a shame thing... I'd hope I didn't get anybody sick. It'd almost be embarrassing," said Rodriguez, who has lived in Colorado Springs for almost two decades. Another person at the park, Sheila Martin, told KOAA she would not feel ashamed if she got the virus, and encouraged people to tell their close contacts if they experience symptoms. "Try to stop the spread, and then eventually, we'll get there," said Martin.Jonathan Baer was also at the park on Tuesday, and said he would not be afraid to talk about test results, and told people to stop their irrational fear of the virus. "I understand that it's real, it has the potential to be very serious, but that doesn't change my thoughts on it... There's been a tremendous fear campaign for the American public," said Baer, who said the media has helped spread that fear. The Clinical Program Manager of Child and Family Services for AspenPointe, Heather Lea, said fear related to the virus and confusion on best practices for safety protocols both contribute to increased anxiety about a positive test. "If I tell somebody that I had COVID, or that I have COVID, automatically, you know, the judgment pieces can come into play. There are embarrassment factors that can come into play for people too, about feeling like maybe there was something I could have done that I didn't, although that's often not really the case for most people," said Lea. Lea discussed how the virus has different layers of guilt associated with it, and said telling close contacts can help relieve some of it. "Regardless of how anxiety-provoking this is, how nervous you are, you are doing the right thing... I would rather get it over and done with, almost like ripping off the band-aid, instead of carrying that around with me forever," said Lea. Lea described it like walking a tightrope when trying to decide who to tell when symptoms first surface, but before a positive test result has actually been received. "It's hard to say. I personally carry that responsibility and would want people to know, as quickly as possible, if I'm waiting days to receive a test," said Lea. She also said any feelings the person who is learning of potential exposure is experiencing are valid, but it's important to move through stages of anger and decide upon the next steps. "This is how stigmas get attached to things, and when we stigmatize things, people don't get help. And they only spend time suffering and hurting when they don't need to be... This is not something you should have to do alone," said Lea. KOAA also reached out to El Paso County Public Health, which provided us with these responses to certain questions:What should I do if I am notified that I tested positive for COVID-19?Public Health is here as a resource to help guide you through this process. As soon as Public Health receives the notification of a positive case (typically these are received through lab reports), we will reach out to let the individual know, and answer any questions. Public Health can work with you to talk about the next steps and to help identify who you might have been in contact with. You can also call (719) 578-3220 to speak to a communicable disease epidemiologist. It’s important to follow the guidance of Public Health. If you test positive, you should isolate at home for at least 10 days since symptoms first appeared AND until no fever for at least 24 hours without medication AND symptoms are improving.Should I notify my friends and family?With COVID-19, we are looking for anyone who may have had prolonged exposure to you – anyone who may have been within six feet or less, for a period of 10-15 minutes or longer. Any household contacts should quarantine for a period of 14 days, and seek testing if they begin experiencing symptoms. Again, when Public Health reaches out, our trained experts will talk through this process with you and help identify who you may have been in prolonged contact with.Here are examples of some of the things we may talk through: Did you go to work while you were ill? Did you attend a social gathering recently? Were you in your prolonged contact with anyone? Did you have long conversations with anyone while standing less than six feet apart? Were you and other people wearing masks? If you may have had prolonged contact with other friends or social contacts, you may want to let them know out of an abundance of caution. Public Health can also work with you throughout this process to identify whether or not additional contacts need to be notified.What if I get a test and am awaiting my results – should I notify the people I’ve been in contact with?One of the things you can do while you’re awaiting test results is to make sure you’re staying home, to prevent spreading illness. Again, it can be helpful to think through who you may have had prolonged contact with; you may want to let close contacts know that you are experiencing symptoms and awaiting test results.
