LAKEWOOD, Ohio - Lizzie Ackerman loves to read."We found that it's really valuable and rewarding to learn about people that are different than us,” said Ackerman.When Ackerman thought about how she would get involved with the Black Lives Matter Movement, she knew just what to do."Sharing books about people who are different than we felt like a really good way to educate ourselves and our community just about the world around us,” she said.This Lakewood resident is starting her very own little free diverse library.It will work similarly to all the little free libraries we’ve seen across Northeast Ohio, except this one will only carry books from Black authors, feature Black people or educate folks on how to be anti-racist. It will also feature topics specific to the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, and cultural, religious, and ethnic minorities."Reading about people and experiences and lifestyles and cultures that are different than your own just helps cultivate empathy and respect and compassion and understanding,” said Ackerman.Ackerman is joining a national movement started by a New York City school counselor."In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, I really thought it would be important to use libraries as an outlet and as a vessel to get important stories heard and read by others within the community,” said Sarah Kamya.Kamya started what she calls the 'Little Free Diverse Libraries Project.’She's collected thousands of books and shipped them to people in all 50 states wanting to start little diverse libraries of their own."Once you put a book in, you don’t know where it goes so I just imagine the little Black or brown child picking up a book and seeing themselves represented or the white parent who is educating themselves, learning more about cultures and learning more how to walk alongside others and people that don’t look like them,” said Kamya.Ackerman plans to launch her library in the middle of the month but she needs some help, so she’s started a Go Fund Me page."Normally little free libraries are stocked by people in the community and just whatever book they’re done with, but because we have a specific topic, we’d like to make sure that we always have books on hand that are relevant,” said Ackerman.Ackerman says this is an opportunity to amplify all Black people through the pages of these books.“It's really important that everyone see themselves reflected and celebrated in literature,” she said.This story was first reported by Amanda VanAllen at WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio. 2541

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A body was recovered in the ocean off a Southern California beach in the same area where a person was found dead in the water a week earlier. A search was launched Friday following reports of a missing swimmer in the Table Rock area of Laguna Beach. It wasn’t immediately known if the person found dead on Saturday is the swimmer reported missing the previous day. It’s the third death along Orange County’s coastline in the past week. A 25-year-old man was found dead in the surf off Huntington Beach on Aug. 25. 549

LeBron James already runs the NBA from a player's perspective, but now people want him to run the country's education system as well. An online petition is asking for signatures to get James considered to take over the Secretary of Education position from Betsy DeVos.The petition says they want James to step in as he has shown his desire to help at-risk children after opening his "I Promise" school in Akron, Ohio late last month which will give education to those children who would not otherwise be able to receive it. It also gives all those who graduate from the school free tuition to Akron University. James recently spoke to CNN's Don Lemon to discuss the new school as well as President Trump to elected DeVos to her position. Trump then went on to tweet about the interview, calling into question James' intelligence. The tweet led to a firestorm of responses calling into question Trump's intelligence as well as the Secretary of Education's. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded to the president's tweet by saying he, and many other athletes across different sports, support James and what he has done in the community, not just the NBA. The petition is looking for 12,000 signatures and currently has over 11,750.  1289

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KGTV) - The beautiful wildflower super bloom in Southern California is being met with some ugly behavior. A sea of bright orange poppies carpets the hills along Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore. Word spread when the bloom erupted; now the area is a huge draw for visitors. "Came out here to see the beauty in nature, the poppies, they only come every few years, so you have to enjoy it,” said Lake Elsinore resident Jessica Rodriguez. She said she’s never seen so many people visit. To see the poppies, visitors must find a spot in a mile-long stretch of parked cars. Others opt to take photos from the freeway, which is illegal. "They want that perfect picture, they can get pretty ones but it’s at the expense of the habitat,” said Josh Reinig, MSHCP Reserve Manager.The parks department posted signs telling people not to step on flowers, and they created barriers to protect certain areas. "You're kind of seeing them a lot more trampled stepped on, people just sitting on them,” Reining said. Picking just one flower could mean 30 fewer flowers grow in the future. "Main thing; stay on trail, I understand people want to get the beautiful selfie in the flowers but if everyone did that, we wouldn't have these poppies." 1253

Lawmakers emerged from a classified administration briefing expressing concern about administration policy on Syria and the legal justification for last week's military strikes against the regime of Bashar al-Assad."I am very unnerved by what I'm hearing and seeing," said Sen. Lindsay Graham, a South Carolina Republican, who said the briefing on the strikes made him more worried, not less. The administration is "going down a dangerous path" with regards to Syria, he said, without offering details.Washington, along with London and Paris, launched airstrikes in the wee hours of Syria's Saturday morning in response for an April 7 attack on the rebel stronghold of Douma that killed about 75 people, including children, and left another 500 in need of treatment for symptoms consistent with chemical weapons exposure.The strike came just 10 days after President Donald Trump had said he wanted to get out of Syria, raising confusion about administration policy."I want to get out," Trump said during an April 3 news conference. "I want to bring our troops back home. It's time."But on April 13, when he announced the strikes, Trump said the US would be undertaking a sustained diplomatic, military and economic response to stop the use of chemical weapons, and officials said the US would remain focused on defeating ISIS.Senators leaving Tuesday's briefing seemed to indicate that Trump's isolationist impulses are going to win out, regardless of the consequences for US global influence, American national security interests or the fate of the region, where Iran is vying for larger influence and Russia has established itself as a power broker, edging out the US.Democratic Sen.
