SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A father and daughter were taken to the hospital for injuries related to an apartment fire in Carmel Valley Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, firefighters were called to an apartment complex on the 12000 block of Torrey Bluff Drive around 4:30 p.m. The department says the man was taken to the hospital with burns to his hands and face while his daughter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The fire was reportedly contained to only one room of the apartment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the blaze may have been started by some sort of device the father was using to smoke. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A family from Chula Vista is desperately looking for their 9-year-old loved one. Erik Ochoa was swept away by the current in Rosarito on Easter Sunday. Ochoa lives in Tijuana with his father. His sisters, Zusel and Hilary live in Chula Vista. The boy was with two other children walking along the beach in Rosarito when they were swept away. One boy made it out of the current and ran to get an adult nearby. The third child washed ashore, lifeless, 25-minutes after going missing. Erik hasn't been seen since. The sisters have been looking for their brother since they heard about what happened. They've been going from Imperial Beach all the way down to Border Field State Park.The Mexican Navy is actively searching on the Mexican side. The U.S. Coast Guard broadcast a message to boaters telling them to be on the lookout. Erik was last seen wearing green shorts and a striped shirt. The family tells 10News the Mexican Navy will search until Sunday.  1008

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. They will continue introducing him to the rest of the Safari Park's crash of rhinos as he gets larger and older.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's baby southern white rhino charges into life at the park"While Victoria knows the other rhinos, Edward has only observed them from a distance," Safari Park Lead Keeper Jonnie Capiro said. "It's time to get Edward acclimated to his crash. We chose to have Helene meet him first, as she is closely bonded with Victoria."Edward is the 99th southern white rhino calf born at the Safari Park and the first such calf to be born through artificial insemination in North America. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years. This much was apparent at the beginning of Taste of December Nights.Within moments of its opening Friday, a line of cars streamed down Park Boulevard, waiting for a chance to order food from about a dozen vendors lined up at Inspiration Point in Balboa Park. "We've been going to December nights every year, but we didn't want to miss it this year," said Jasper Pascual, of National City, who came with his girlfriend Wendee. "It's something new, something interesting."The pandemic has upended decades of tradition, including December Nights in Balboa Park. Thousands normally pack the event in Balboa Park, enjoying holiday decorations, museums and food. This year, the event is a drive through for food vendors, with participants required to stay in their cars and wear masks. Pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter riders are not allowed. "This event obviously is re-imagined, it's different, but again I think it's the type of event that I think is just what some folks will need," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said as he kicked off the event. San Diegans appeared to agree, waiting in stop-and-go traffic to get into one of two ordering lines. A worker from one of the eateries comes to the window, takes an order, and eventually brings the food. Options included coffee, mini donuts, Cajun and kettle corn."Just tell people be super, super patient, bring some music, relax, have fun, enjoy it, because it's going to be a while," said Hellen Silva, who came with her husband and mother. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A popular Thai restaurant in the College Area has been broken into for the second time in three weeks.At Sala Thai, there are sizzling entrees and simmering frustrations. "Saw the mess on the floor and thought what's going on?" said owner Chira Svangvitaya.A look at the surveillance video gave Svangvitaya the answer. Just before 5:30 Monday morning, a man in a hoodie is seen creeping into through the back door. He heads right to the cash register but finds it empty.He grabs some paperwork, empties the change dish and moments later, he leaves. It isn't for long. "He walked in and out three times, like he's not afraid of anything," said Svangvitaya.Two more trips nets him armfuls of stuff, including a computer, iPad, iPod, checkbooks and a case of soda. Near the end, he takes off his hood - and Svangvitaya's heart sank."I feel so sad and annoying. I don't know what I did to him," said Svangvitaya.The intruder is a stranger to her, but appears to be the same man who broke into the restaurant early Halloween morning. On that occasion, he used a crowbar to mangle the lock and damaged the register while grabbing 0 in cash. He also nabbed five tablets and a computer, crippling her online delivery business.Svangvitaya spent 0 to add a deadbolt after the Halloween break-in. This time, the intruder destroyed the repaired lock and the new deadbolt and went right on in.
