WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Homeland Security has asked the military to provide more help securing the U.S.-Mexico border, two defense officials said Friday amid a political standoff over President Donald Trump's demand for more money to build a border wall.The acting secretary of defense, Pat Shanahan, has not decided how to respond to the DHS request, but in the past the Pentagon has provided help when asked. At one point last fall there were nearly 5,900 active-duty troops along the border in Texas, Arizona and California to assist border patrol agents and to erect wire barriers. That number now is about 2,350.The defense officials said DHS asked for certain military capabilities, not any number of troops. It will be up to Shanahan to decide whether more active-duty troops are dispatched. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the request for assistance has not yet been fully processed.One of the officials said DHS wants the military to put up concertina wire as barriers along 160 miles of border. That would be in addition to 70 miles of concertina wire that combat engineers put up last fall. If the new work is taken on by the military, it might require an extension of the current deployment beyond its scheduled end Jan. 31. The official said DHS did not specifically ask for an extension, but it has not been ruled out.The troops have been erecting and reinforcing border barriers but are not performing law enforcement tasks or engaging with migrants. Some also have been providing transportation and logistical help as well as medical assistance to troops and to Customs and Border Protection personnel along the border.Many in Congress, including leading Democrats, have criticized the troop deployments as a waste of money and a misuse of military resources.Separately, there are about 2,200 National Guard troops deployed along the border. It is possible that some of those, or additional deployments of National Guard personnel, could be used to perform some of the work requested by DHS. 2049

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions. WASHINGTON, D.C. – A group of bipartisan lawmakers unveiled two emergency relief bills Monday that they hope will help struggling Americans get through the COVID-19 pandemic.The same group of senators and representatives introduced a 8 billion bill earlier this month, but they couldn’t secure enough support. So, they broke the bill up into two with the hopes of passing something as the coronavirus continues to ravage the country.One bill is called the Bipartisan COVID-19 Emergency Relief Act of 2020. It would provide as much as 8 billion in relief to American students, families, businesses, workers, and health care providers.That measure would include additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program, schools, unemployment insurance, vaccine distribution, coronavirus testing, and contact tracing.The other bill is called the Bipartisan State and Local Support and Small Business Protection Act of 2020. It would provide 0 billion in funding for state and local governments, as well as liability protections. Both of those issues have been sticking points in relief negotiations.During a press conference introducing the legislation, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) said the bills are a compromise that will carry the American people through April 1, 2021, “to ensure our healthcare crisis doesn’t become an economic catastrophe.”Sen.
