America has an opioid problem and more mothers are struggling with sobriety.“At the height of my addiction, I could take anywhere from 20 or 30 Percocets a day if I had them,” said Amanda Martin, who’s opioid addiction started shortly after the death of a child.“My third born son died shortly after he was born and that just made a huge impact on me,” Martin said.During her fourth and fifth pregnancies, Martin, a former nurse, started taking pain pills which she says impacted her other children’s health.“They both had delayed speech patterns,” she said. “My youngest son that I took the most opiates with, he did have some developmental delays.”Martin’s opioid addiction eventually led to heroin use and ultimately put her in jail.New research shows during the past two decades, four times as many pregnant women are struggling with opioid use disorder and almost eight times as many infants are diagnosed with opioid withdrawal.Now, health experts say that many are having a hard time getting proper treatment.“Hospitals are providing variable care,” said Stephen Patrick, MD, director of the Vanderbilt Center for Child Health Policy. "And we see systems in communities really stretched, everything from local community hospitals to the child welfare system."He says every 15 minutes in America, an infant is born having an opioid withdrawal, which accounts for half a billion dollars in healthcare expenditures nationwide.“This year it looks like we’re on record pace once again to have to have a record-number of opioid overdoses,” Patrick said.While the COVID-19 crisis has made it harder for pregnant women to get into treatment, Patrick says this is a fixable problem, but that America currently lacks to funding and political will to change it.“As we start to usher in a new administration, I really hope the unique needs of pregnant women and infants affected by the opioid crisis are front and center,” he said.More help is something Martin agrees with, especially during the COVID crisis.“We see a lot of people coming in that are relapsing just simply because of the pandemic,” said Martin.Now three-and-a-half years sober, Martin is working as a recovery coach for Vertava Health in Mississippi and encouraging pregnant moms battling opioid addiction to get help, no matter how hard it may be.“There’s help out there,” she said. “And there’s non-judgmental places that you can come and you can get your whole life together and never have to live that way.” 2482

After a brief flirtation with resurrection, Nickelodeon's "Double Dare" is back -- for real, this time.The game show favorite will return to the network this summer to give "a new generation of kids the chance to compete in the messiest and most physically challenging competition of their lives," Nickelodeon announced Wednesday.The decision to bring the series back comes about a year and a half after Nickelodeon paid tribute to the game show with a 30th Anniversary special."Double Dare" ran on Nickelodeon from 1986-93 and was revived for brief run in 2000.The original show was hosted by Marc Summers and co-hosted by Robin Marella.It is not yet known who will host the new iteration. A years-long battle between the Cornwall-Lebanon, Pennsylvania School District and social studies teacher Luke "Todd" Scipioni finally came to an end this week when a court ruled that Scipioni can return to work, the Lebanon Daily News reported. School officials learned in 2014 that Scipioni had sex with a female student on her graduation night in 2004. The allegations surfaced during Scipioni's divorce proceedings, the Daily News reported. The Daily News reported that Scipioni and the student developed a relationship during the 2003-04 school year, but it did not turn sexual until student's graduation. The relationship ceased when she went off to college at the end of the summer. The district then fired Scipioni in October 2014 when it confirmed the relationship between Scipioni and the student. Scipioni then challenged the district in court, with an arbitrator’s ruling that Scipioni was not forthcoming in the details of the relationship, and that he should be suspended for one year, but not banned from teaching. This week, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that Scipioni should not have been punished beyond the suspension, and is entitled to return to his job.Scipioni is reportedly interested in returning to work for the district after he and the district settle on back pay. A district spokesperson said that while it disagrees with the ruling, it will abide by the justices' ruling. 1546

A man in Florida called police while Collier County Sheriff's deputies were chasing him Tuesday morning.The sheriff's office report said it all started because the suspect acted suspiciously. The sheriff's deputy went up to the car and smelled a smell similar to marijuana.The deputy spotted a baggie that contained a green leafy substance. The suspect then grabbed the bag, put it in his mouth, and sped away."I need help, please," said Aric Frydberg, the man who was arrested after the 7-mile pursuit on U.S. 41. "There's a police officer chasing me," he added.Fort Myers-based WFTX obtained the 911 call. The operator tried numerous times to get Frydberg to pull over.But during the phone call, Frydberg tried to get the operator to make some calls on his behalf. The first set of calls was to his parents."Call my mom, call my mom," said Frydberg. "Please call my mom," he added while on the phone.Then he took it a step further and wanted to speak to the president.  "Donald Trump is a close friend of mine," said Frydberg. "We made a deal," he added while he was trying to convince the operator.Frydberg then changed gears and tried a different strategy.  "My mom called me and said she was in a car accident in Homestead," he said. "My flesh and blood was in a car accident and I have to stop and help you," Frydberg added.Deputies eventually got him off the road and phone.The report goes on to say the deputies searched the car and found glass pipes with burnt leafy residue on them. They later field tested the particles and it tested positive for marijuana.Frydberg is being charged with tampering with evidence, resisting an officer, and two counts of battery of an officer. 1744
