The mayor of Austin, Texas, has apologized after reports revealed that he delivered an address urging his constituents to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while he was vacationing in Mexico."I regret this travel," Austin Mayor Steve Adler, a Democrat, said in a statement, according to The Austin American-Statesman. "My fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used by some as justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize."According to the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV in Austin, Adler took the trip after he hosted a small outdoor wedding ceremony for his daughter in early November. Both outlets report that there were about 20 guests at the wedding — more than the recommended guidelines of a limit of 10 per gathering that was in effect at the time.Following the ceremony, KVUE reports that Adler and eight family members boarded a private jet and traveled to Cabo San Lucas for a resort vacation. One day into that trip, on Nov. 9, Adler urged Austinites to stay at home."We need to stay home if you can," Adler said in that video, according to the American-Stateman. "This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely. ... We may have to close things down if we are not careful."Adler told the American-Statesman that he consulted with public health officials before hosting the wedding and that all 20 guests were required to undergo rapid COVID-19 tests before attending. He also said that masks were distributed during the reception guests "probably" did not wear them for the duration of the reception.KVUE adds that some of the guests traveled by plane to attend the wedding, including the Seattle-based wedding photographer.Adler isn't the only politician who has failed to heed his own warnings against travel. Last week, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, a Democrat, traveled by plane to Mississippi to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family, despite repeated requests to his constituents not to travel for the holiday. 2096

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released some of the video that was captured on Oct. 1 when police officers broke into the suite being used by mass shooter Stephen Paddock.Sheriff Joe Lombardo told the public on Tuesday that the department would release the video. Lombardo emphasized that the release of the video and other records would most likely retraumatize survivors and family members and that it would also put stress, both emotional and financial, on the department.  507

The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating nine recent cases of acute flaccid myelitis, also called AFM, according to a statement Wednesday. All of the cases are in patients younger than 18 and have been clinically diagnosed by health care providers, the statement said. State health officials are working with the care providers to obtain the samples and information to send to the US Centers for Disease and Prevention for testing and confirmation of the diagnoses."The CDC will make the final determination on diagnoses and numbers are subject to change," the statement said. All of the patients are "from northern Illinois," according to the health department, but no other location information was provided.Since 2015, when Illinois began monitoring reports of AFM in the state, four confirmed cases have been identified.AFM is a polio-like illness that affects a person's nervous system, including the spinal cord. Symptoms can include sudden limb weakness, loss of muscle tone and reflexes, facial and eyelid drooping, facial weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, swallowing difficulty or slurred speech, according to the CDC.The rare condition can be caused by a virus, a genetic disorder and environmental toxins. There is no treatment other than managing each patient's symptoms.Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the Colorado state epidemiologist, said the best prevention is frequent handwashing and keeping kids home when they are sick.On Tuesday, the Colorado Department of Health said?it has confirmed 14 cases there this year. All of the patients are children who have needed to be hospitalized, the department said, noting that "nearly all have fully recovered.""The state health department has been monitoring this situation closely since early spring. In addition to investigating the outbreak, the state health department has issued alerts to health care providers on how to test for the viruses and enhanced guidance to child care centers on infection prevention," the department said in a statement. The type of viruses found in 12 of the Colorado cases, enterovirus, typically increases in summer and fall and is common, the state department of health said. However, 11 of the Colorado cases of AFM have tested positive for EV A71, a rare type of enterovirus not usually seen in the US, rather in Asia and other parts of the world, according to Herlihy. "This is certainly the largest outbreak of enterovirus A71 we've seen in Colorado."She referred to these 11 cases as an outbreak within an outbreak. "We have 41 cases of children who have had some sort of illness of enterovirus A71, which is causing a wide spectrum of neurological illness."In previous years, cases of AFM in Colorado and elsewhere have been positive for a different enterovirus, EV-D68.On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Health said it was investigating six cases of AFM in children over the past few weeks but did not identify what virus or other cause may have led to the illnesses. As of September 30, according to the CDC, 38 cases of AFM have been confirmed in 16 states. This does not include all of the 14 cases announced by Colorado, as some of those cases were confirmed after September 30. It also does not include the cases in Minnesota or Illinois, as they are not confirmed.Since August 2014, when the CDC began tracking the illness more closely, the agency has reported 362 cases. In 2017, 33 cases were reported in 16 states. One hundred forty-nine cases were reported in 39 states in 2016 and 22 cases in 17 states in 2015. 3570

The presidential race remains too close to call, and vote totals show President Donald Trump's lead slowly evaporating in some key battleground states. In recent days, Trump has attempted to use his favorite social media platform to spread disinformation about the election process — but Twitter has fought back.Between early Tuesday morning — after polls had closed in most of the U.S. — and noon ET on Friday, Trump has sent a tweet or retweet 37 times. Twitter has applied disclaimers to 13 of those tweets.Of those disclaimers, 12 indicate that "some or all of the content" about the election in the President's tweet is "disputed" and possibly "misleading." Twitter also added a disclaimer noting that races in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina remain too close to call to Trump's Wednesday morning tweet in which he "claimed" all three states "for Electoral Vote purposes." As of Friday, those states are still too close to call.Trump railed against Twitter's fact checks in a Friday morning tweet, saying the social media platform is "out of control."In many cases, Twitter has added disclaimers to Trump's tweets in the moments after the President sends them. The social media service began fact-checking Trump earlier this year, but prior to this week, it would often take several hours to apply disclaimers.Trump has attempted to sow doubt in the electoral process for months. On the campaign trail, he often argued without basis that mail-in ballots would be fraudulent. The President's attempt to discredit mail-in ballot appears to have had a partisan effect on mail-in voting. An enormous percentage of mail-in ballots across the country have gone to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, while Trump has carried a vast majority of in-person votes. 1781
