SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An innovative K-12 curriculum created by the Cajon Valley Union School District (CVUSD) is gaining nationwide attention.World of Work aims to tackles problems seen in the education system head-on. "The programs that we have here at Fuerte are really empowering the students to think differently. They are really empowering them to challenge the adults to rethink education," said Kristen Goodrich, Principal of Fuerte Elementary. Through various activities, students discover which of six personality traits fits them best and the careers that could be a good match.It's called the RIASEC Model:RealisticInvestigativeArtisticSocialEnterprisingConventionalOn Tuesday, education and state leaders toured schools in the district as part of the ExcelinEd 2019 National Summit on Education Reform. "I jumped at the opportunity because it sounds like there's a lot of things going right here," said Wendy Horman, an Idaho State Representative. World of Work students receive hands-on experiences, meet a professional in the career, and practice skills needed in that career.By fourth grade, students are creating resumes, and by fifth, they're applying for jobs and doing interviews. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Sorrento Valley company is working to create an implant that will help people kick their addiction to both opioids and alcohol.BioCorRx, based in Orange County, is developing the implant. They chose San Diego-based Irisys Therapeutics to help them build it."It’s not going to fix the opioid crisis," says BioCorRx CEO Brady Granier. "But it’s going to be another tool in a tool chest of those people looking for another solution and one that will help them get through the cravings."The implant uses Naltrexone, a drug already approved by the FDA as an every-day pill or a once-per-month shot. Naltrexone blocks receptors in the brain so that opioids or alcohol won't have any effect on people who use them. It also helps curb cravings."As long as it’s blocking the receptor, the opioids come in, and they can’t engage with that receptor to give you the euphoria or the respiratory depression that leads to overdose," says Granier. "It’s protecting you."Granier says creating an implant that lasts three months will make it more likely that people will be able to beat their addition. The implant, named BICX102, would be implanted into a person's stomach fat and dissolve slowly over three months."The goal is to give someone a longer period of time to address those issues without the intrusive cravings coming in," he says. "A lot of behavioral changes can take place in 90 days that you can’t do in 30."Granier's company just received a .7 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It will last two years, which Granier says will fund the research through the development of the implant and some early testing.He's hoping to start human testing by 2020.Granier says implants like the one he is hoping to create are already available in other countries. But the FDA has yet to approve one in the US, where standards are more strict."The first pellet you make needs to be exactly the same as the 10,000th," he says. "It has to be a precise process."It's personal for Granier, who has family members with addiction in their past. He also worked as a nurse before starting his company. Granier says he saw the destructive effects of addiction every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An old airport terminal turned innovation lab hopes to ultimately improve the customer experience at San Diego International Airport (SAN).The second group of innovators has begun the 16-week accelerator program to "field test" and develop their concepts in a real-world airport environment.The Innovation Lab was launched to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. The 3,500-square-foot space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around."We wanted to provide a location where we could invite innovators in to test their solutions," said Rebecca Bloomfield, spokesperson for SAN. Jon Wisner, Director of Business Development & Partnerships at HOHM Inc., says they've already gotten good feedback on a sleeping pod they hope to bring to airports. "What we are trying to validate is the best usage for the pod - whether it be used for a nap, lactation room, or privacy just in general, meditation, prayer," said Wisner. The pods are currently being tested by airport staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A UC San Diego graduate is using a technology he created as a student to help avoid crowds during the pandemic. Nic Halverson launched Waitz in 2017, an application that measures and publishes how busy a space is at any given time.Using "Occuspace" sensors plugged into wall outlets, the app uses Bluetooth and WiFi signals to calculate how many people are in the room at a time. Halverson said it does not take any personal data and solely looks at how many devices are present.He said he first thought of the idea as a student who came from a small town of 3,000 people, then was overwhelmed by the crowds of San Diego.“I just turned to my friend and I was like, ‘man I wish we knew how busy every floor was before we came here,’ and that’s when kinda the light bulb went off,” he said.At UCSD currently, the application is used in two libraries, two gyms, and the main food court area. As of the end of August, about a dozen schools across the country will be signed up for the technology, with an anticipated number of close to 60 schools by the spring semester.While it’s useful for students trying to find a study spot, 2020 has changed the need.“We and other people realize that people care about how crowded places are now more than ever and it kinda transformed from being that was just convenient to have, it was nice to know how busy a place was before you went, to something that was more a matter of health and safety,” he said.While UCSD has not announced any plans to incorporate the app in any official coronavirus plan once students return to campus, the technology will still remain live.Halverson said they are currently talking to ski resorts to use the app to publish wait times for ski lines or restaurants, and he hopes it will continue to grow from there.“My dream is one day, you’ll be able to look and see how busy every Starbucks or Chipotle is right there on your phone,” he said. 1935
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - All month long recreational vehicle owners staying at the Dreams for Change safe parking lot have been desperate to find a new place to stay. They were given 30-day notices to leave the site by the end of July. Dreams for Change leadership says it was always their intention to shift clients to the City's new safe parking lot, located near SDCCU stadium. However, the new safe parking lot has gone mostly unused. RV owners are required to move their vehicles during the day, which can be a barrier for some.CEO of Dreams for Change, Teresa Smith, says they've now come up with a temporary solution. RV owners will be allowed to leave their vehicles on the property, but they will have to go during the day.The nonprofit must balance serving their clients while also abiding by permitting and zoning rules. They are working to treat RVs the same way cars are treated in the program.Smith says the ultimate goal is to transition clients into permanent housing, who receive assistance from a caseworker. According to the Dreams for Change website, 2,650 people have been served through the program since 2009, and 65% of participants find housing or long-term transitional housing within three months of coming into contact with the nonprofit. 1268
