WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Bernie Sanders held an in-person campaign for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March, heading to the battleground states of New Hampshire and Michigan to promote Joe Biden and soothe any lingering tensions between the Democratic Party's progressive and centrist wings. WATCH RECAP: On Saturday, the Vermont senator held a socially distanced, outdoor rally Saturday in Lebanon, New Hampshire which was capped to keep crowds from growing too large. Sanders spoke about a range of topics, from the economy to the pandemic. Sanders said that there are some who think the government has to make a choice between having a strong economy and protecting the American people coronavirus. He said the truth of the matter is that America won't have a strong economy if the virus continues to surge. "We will never have a strong economy if people are afraid to go to work, afraid to go to school, afraid to shop, afraid to have dinner at a restaurant, or afraid to do all of the things that we normally do," Sanders said. "We will never have a strong economy unless we get this pandemic under control."As of Saturday afternoon, more than 209,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus, according to Johns Hopkins. When speaking about the economy, Sanders said the working class is in "more desperation today than at any time since the great depression of the 1930's."Sanders added that during the pandemic, nearly 60% of Latino families and 55% of African-American families have either experienced a job loss or a pay cut, while the billionaires of our country have profited."In the last number of months, 640 three billionaires -- that's not a lot of people -- have seen their wealth go up by 5 billion," Sanders said. "Let me say that again. While 30 million Americans have lost their jobs, while 12 million Americans have lost their health insurance, while 29 million Americans do not have enough food to eat, while 40 million of our people face eviction, 643 billionaires increased their wealth by 0, that's billion over the last six months alone."On Monday, Sanders will host a drive-in rally in Macomb County, Michigan — a Detroit suburb that voted Republican in 2016 and was instrumental in clinching the White House for President Donald Trump. 2313
With coronavirus cases spreading among White House staff, the Commission on Presidential Debates confirmed Monday evening that a Plexiglas partition will be used on stage during Wednesday’s vice presidential debate.Peter Eyre, a senior adviser to the debate commission, said that the candidates will be seated 12 feet, 3 inches apart, and that there will be no handshakes allowed on stage between the candidates or moderator.Eyre added that the candidates, Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris, will be tested for the coronavirus before the debate. For the previous debate, the candidates were responsible for their own coronavirus testing.Only the candidates and moderator will be allowed to not wear a mask during the debate, also a change from last week’s presidential debate. During last week’s presidential debate, members of President Donald Trump’s entourage took off their masks during the debate.Eyre said that a small number of ticketed guests will be allowed into the debate hall in Utah.“If anyone does not wear a mask, they will be escorted out,” Eyre confirmed.Plexiglas was also used in last Saturday's US Senate debate between Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Jamie Garrison. A Pence aide said a divider was "not needed."“If she wants it, she’s more than welcome to surround herself with plexiglass if that makes her feel more comfortable,” Marc Short, the vice president’s chief of staff, told the Washington Post. “It’s not needed.” 1479
When scrolling through your Instagram feed, there's a good chance you've seen photos of friends posing in front of giant works of art on the sides of buildings. These colorful murals are a great way for an artist to make a name for themselves. But beyond that, the murals can be great for a neighborhood and its businesses.Tracy Weil is midway through his latest project: a 125-foot long mural in Denver’s River North Arts District.Murals like Weil’s do more for a neighborhood than add a splash of color to an otherwise dull brick wall."It can really kind of give an identity to a neighborhood, which I think is pretty fantastic,” says Weil. “If there’s not a lot of people there, not a lot of restaurants, what the murals do is they start to draw people. And they start to draw business."That’s exactly why the events center and nightclub behind the freshly-painted wall hires artists like Weil."I think it’s a great way to bring attention, to not just your specific business maybe, but to a neighborhood, to a region," says Andrew Feinstein, owner of EXDO Events Center and Tracks nightclub. “Regardless of what murals cost, it’s absolutely the right investment."And it’s an investment that's paying off, particularly when it comes to presence on social media. John Beldock, owner of a local motorsport store and body shop, says their mural of Evel Knievel has seen its share of Instagram tags."Branding-wise, it really adds to what people think about us," says Beldock.“It’s exiting to be a part of it; it makes a great selfie or Facebook profile pic or Instagram post,” says Weil. “And people really get into it.” 1631
