A new sculpture has been unveiled at Arlington National Cemetery that honors the commitment of our brave military servicewomen.Called “The Pledge,” the life-size statue features a female soldier in a full combat uniform alongside a service dog.A website for the sculptor, Susan Bahary, says the piece is meant to emphasize the capabilities of women, which were attributed to only men not long ago.“’The Pledge’ captures a brief private moment of mutual respect and love, with duty calling,” the website says. “They pledge to support each other, doing the best they can to accomplish their important mission and stay safe.”The sculpture was commissioned by the U.S. War Dogs Association.It will be on display at the Women In Military Service For America Memorial, which The Associated Press reports is the only major national memorial honoring all women who have defended America throughout its history.Click here to learn about visiting the memorial. 958

A typical delivery turned into a personal moment for one Michigan military family and an Amazon delivery driver.Amanda LeCureaux of New Baltimore, Michigan says she received a notification on her phone from her smart doorbell about an incoming delivery on Dec. 12 and turned on the camera to see what was coming.“I started to play it…and it showed him saluting, and I was like, ‘oh my gosh,’” LeCureaux said.The delivery driver dropped off a package, stepped back from the porch and saluted the house before leaving.The reason for the salute? A University of Maryland football player who died of heat stroke this summer did not receive proper medical care, and some members of the training staff made mistakes, according to preliminary results of an independent review.Jordan McNair, 19, died June 13, two weeks after taking part in a workout at Maryland's outdoor practice fields, CNN affiliate WJZ reported. Last week, the university placed its head football coach, D.J. Durkin, and members of the athletic staff on administrative leave pending the investigation into circumstances surrounding the death.The preliminary findings of an external review, which will be made public in September, found that an emergency response was not followed in McNair's case and the care the university provided was not consistent with best practices, Athletic Director Damon Evans said Tuesday.McNair's heat illness was not promptly identified, and athletic training staff did not take his temperature and apply a cold-water immersion treatment, Evans said.The university has also parted with its head strength coach, Rick Court, Evans said."We will honor Jordan's life and we will ensure that a tragedy such as this never happens on our campus again by working every single day to provide the safest environment for our student-athletes on and off the field," Evans said, fighting back tears.Evans announced the preliminary findings hours after he and university President Wallace D. Loh met with McNair's family and shared the findings with them.The two officials apologized to McNair's family during that meeting in Baltimore and issued public apologies Tuesday.Loh said he told the family the "university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes that our training staff made on that fateful workout day."Loh said he also told McNair's family: "The university owes you an apology. A Michigan couple faced discrimination due to their sexual orientation, but because of the state's laws, it’s legal. They’re sharing their story because of a new national campaign called Beyond I Do.The campaign highlights states that are legally allowed to discriminate due to sexual orientation, for things like employment, housing and social services, doctors visits or dining at a restaurant.Jami and Krista Contreras are a couple from Oak Park, Michigan. Three years ago, they became new parents and brought their six-day-old newborn to a local pediatrician, but they were denied care. "Your doctor prayed on it and decided she won't see you all today,” Krista Contreras claims one employee at the doctor's office said.The couple was floored. They said they had personally experienced discrimination for their sexual orientation, but they never though it would directly carry over to their newborn in this way.“We spoke to other people and they would say well they can’t do that… that’s not legal and we looked into it and it was legal,” Jami Contreras said.According to the Beyond I Do campaign, 31 states including Michigan don’t have protections for this kind of discrimination. “It was horrifying and humiliating and we just kept thinking god she's 6 days old and she’s already experiencing discrimination,” said Krista.  1358

A vehicle was intentionally driven Friday into three students outside a high school near the southern French city of Toulouse, injuring them, the country's interior ministry said.A driver was arrested after the collision, and the Toulouse prosecutor has been called to investigate, the ministry said.The collision happened outside Saint Exupéry high school, according to CNN affiliate BFM TV.Initial information about the conditions of the injured -- identified by authorities only as Chinese students -- conflicted. The interior ministry said the students were lightly injured; BFM reported that two were in serious condition.Toulouse Prosecutor Pierre-Yves Couilleau said around noon ET that two students remained hospitalized and one had left the hospital.The vehicle accelerated as the students crossed a road, the interior ministry said.The driver has a history of mental illness, the interior ministry said in a statement.
