BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military authorities pledged Sunday to tighten supervision on senior and middle ranking officers, through strict punishment in cases of breach of duty and regular inspection of their work.     The military will adopt a strict system to investigate and punish senior officers for breaching duty or making mistakes, said a circular issued by the Central Military Commission (CMC) on Sunday.     The document, approved by CMC Chairman Hu Jintao, said it will also introduce a system of accountability by regular inspection on the work of officers at army corps level.     Military units higher than regiment level of the People's Liberation Army must review the work of their commanding officers at least once a year, it added.     Commanding officers from regiment to army corps levels are usually regarded as middle and senior ranking PLA officers.     It will tighten inspection on senior officers to see whether they strictly follow the military disciplines and show loyalty to the Communist Party of China.     The circular called on the officers to keep a communist nature. "In the face of a complicated ideological situation, senior military officers must stick to their faith and keep a firm political stance," it said.     They should devote themselves to building up the country's military capacity to win local wars in the information age, it said.     The document said that the supervision and inspection will focus on any examples of extravagance and waste by military officers.

SINGAPORE, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China Aviation Oil said on Friday that its net profit in the first quarter of this year fell by 54.6 percent on-year to 4.1 million U.S. dollars.     The company said in a statement that revenue fell by 34.8 percent to 655.6 million U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2009 over the same period last year.     The company said the drop was mainly due to lower jet fuel prices in the first quarter of this year, adding that it will continue to take a cautious approach to its trading activities during the global downturn.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Kuwait signed five agreements here on Sunday in an effort to further the bilateral relations to a higher level.     The agreements covered fields of energy, finance, telecommunication, transportation and education, according a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- In light of an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico, China's Ministry of Health issued a notice Sunday about disease prevention and detection, warning citizens to be careful.     The notice defines the symptoms of the disease and how it can be transmitted to humans.     Although there is no vaccine yet, the disease is preventable, controllable and treatable, it said.     As of Monday morning, no cases of the illness had been reported in China.     The ministry said so far, there is no evidence that this flu could be spread through food.     It also warned those who travel abroad to be alert for any signs of infection.     Swine influenza A/H1N1 is a respiratory disease that infects pigs and does not normally infect humans. But sporadic cases do occur, usually for people who have had close contact with pigs.     It has killed more than 60 people out of about 1,000 suspected cases in Mexico.     China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) issued an emergency notice Saturday requiring people to report flu-like symptoms at the point of entry when returning from affected regions.     According to the Health Ministry, the ministry is working with the Ministry of Agriculture and GAQSIQ to monitor the disease.     The ministry has contacted scientists who have done viral sequencing on swine flu. It has also stepped up cooperation with the World Health Organization and the U.S. and Mexican governments to obtain updated epidemic information and prepare for a possible outbreak.     China should establish an effective disease prevention and control system it it entry-exit inspection and quarantine process, the ministry added.

URUMQI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Xinjiang branch of China Charity Federation said Saturday it had received 2.03 million yuan (297,218 U.S. dollars) in donation from all walks of life for victims in the Urumqi riot.     The single largest donation is 200,000 yuan from the Xinjiang company of China Pacific Life Insurance Co., Ltd., said the federation.     Wu Jie, an employee of the insurance company, said she would like to do something for the dead and injured people. "We need to comfort the families of the dead and help the people who need medical treatment."     Maolaxifu Rishat, a businessman of the Tartar ethnic group who was the first to propose a comfort fund for riot victims, donated 5,200 yuan on behalf of 14 donators from 14 different ethnic groups.     "We pray for national unity in Xinjiang, so that we can have a peaceful and harmonious environment," he said.     Urumqi Public Transport Group, which suffered 37.6 million yuan as hundreds of its buses were torched or smashed, received 3.38 million yuan in donation from enterprises in the city. Five bus drivers of the group were killed by mobs and 57 others injured.     The riot in Xinjiang on July 5, the worst in six decades, caused a severe shortage of blood at local hospitals where more than 1,000 injured people were rushed in.     Shortly after the shortage was reported, many citizens rolled up their sleeves to donate blood.     On Friday, Urumqi's blood center announced the shortage had been eased, but donors continued to pour in.     A total of 1,315 people from 13 ethnic groups had come to the blood collection stations to donate 400,000 milliliters of blood as of 10 p.m. Friday. More than 1,000 other people have made appointments with blood collection centers to donate blood in the coming days.
