SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show announced this year's air and ground military event has been canceled citing the coronavirus pandemic.The 66-year-old air acrobatics demonstration is one of the nation's largest military air shows drawing several hundred thousand spectators over the three-day weekend event.MCAS Miramar tweeted, "Due to the continuing spread and health concerns of #COVID19, @MCASMiramarCA must formally announce the cancellation of the 2020 Miramar Air Show. It is a disappointment to us as well as many across the world, but the safety of our Marines and fellow San Diegans must come first."This is the first time the event has been canceled since 2013 when the U.S. Department of Defense slashed budgets due to a government shutdown.This year's event was scheduled for September 25-27. Officials said they are aiming to bring back the event next year.“While we had initially hoped to host the show and help usher in a re-opened San Diego, there are still a great many risks posed with a mass gathering of this size and scale to do it in a way that ensures our guests absolute safety," said Col. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles has announced he will retire from football at the end of the 2019 season, the Eagles announced Saturday.Sproles spent 15 years in the NFL, racking up 3,552 career rushing yards, 4,840 receiving yards, and 55 total touchdowns. He was a three-time Pro Bowl running back and spend six seasons in San Diego with the Chargers before heading to the New Orleans Saints and lastly Philadelphia.The 36-year-old Sproles told reporters he's at peace with his decision to retire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Newly-elected San Diego District 4 councilwoman Monica Montgomery is vowing to improve the relationship between her community and the police department. On Monday, she was unanimously appointed to the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee. More than a dozen community members spoke during a special meeting on Monday, backing Montgomery. The overwhelming support for her appointment quickly turned to frustration and anger towards the rest of the council and the police department about Aleah Jenkins, who died in SDPD custody early this month. Montgomery says she hears the community's frustration and is ready to get to work. "A lot of this stems just not from the support of me, but the desire to have real action in our community when it comes to our police and community relations," said Montgomery.She plans on taking a closer look at an SDSU racial profiling study within the department and look into possibly giving the Community Review Board subpoena powers to allow them to perform independent investigations and obtain sworn testimony during alleged police misconduct. "I'm confident we'll do the right thing. Everyone will need to do the right thing; we're at a crossroads and we need to do the right thing by our people and by our officers," added Montgomery. The police department insists there is no evidence of force used during Jenkins' arrest and is referring all questions to the district attorney. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach residents were seen running for their lives as a pickup truck slammed into several parked vehicles early Thursday.Witness video captured the incident, showing a pickup truck revving its engine, screeching its tires, and slamming into vehicles. Witnesses said at least nine vehicles were damaged. Another video showed neighbors holding the driver down on the ground until police arrived, one neighbor holding the man down in a headlock. Someone nearby could be heard yelling, "don't hurt him," at the group.Police arrive to detain the driver, but it's not clear what led to the dangerous incident.One neighbor who helped hold down the driver said his first reaction was to prevent anyone for getting hurt."My first reaction he needed to get out of the car and restrain him so he didn't hit anyone else," said James Scherr.The driver was taken to a nearby hospital by police for minor injuries. Police did not say whether drugs or alcohol were a factor. 992
