(AP) — Police say officers arrested five teenagers Thanksgiving night on suspicion of robbing a San Francisco Bay Area Target and firing shot at security guards before fleeing in a car.The Fremont Police Department says in a statement Friday that officers responded late Thursday to the store at a Fremont shopping mall after several reports of shots fired.It says the teens ranging in age from 17 to 19 stole video games and other items and that when a getaway car arrived, one of them fired multiple rounds into the air as the suspects piled into the car and fled.Officers gave chase in a brief pursuit that ended after the car stopped and one of the suspects tried to flee on foot.The department says officers arrested that teenager and the other four and recovered a gun and the stolen items from the car. 833

FORT MYERS, Fla., - A new class is coming to Florida Gulf Coast University and it's raising eyebrows.The class is called ‘White Racism’ and will be offered in the Spring. “I thought the name was a little dramatic,” student Jamar Arrindell said. “It's been a growing topic of conversation."The topic took center stage at an open forum Thursday night titled “Race, Immigration and White Supremacy in the Post-Obama era.”“I saw the flyer for the event and had to come,” said Vanessa Fernandez, a former FGCU student. "I think it's important for us to talk through it so we can understand each other's sides”Dr. Ted Thornhill, a sociology professor, will be teaching the course."I understand why some people might be uncomfortable by the title," he said. "But in order to move the conversation forward people have to get comfortable with getting uncomfortable." Thornhill said the new course wasn’t developed in response to racially charged messages found around campus last fall, but to give students a broad idea of the history of racism, white supremacy and how to challenge racism in today’s society. “Silence is not the answer," he said. "Conversation, knowledge, education is the answer and that's what I'm hoping to provide students with the opportunity to gain.”The course was expanded from 35 to 50 students due to high demand, and it’s currently at capacity. 1402

Florida State University notified students Wednesday afternoon that Spring Break 2021 is canceled.FSU said the move is in an effort to keep students and staff safe and healthy.Under the new plan, the Spring semester will begin on January 6, 2021, the first three days of which will be taught remotely.As a result of canceling Spring Break the Spring semester will now end on April 23, 2021, a week earlier than planned.The letter reads as follows:"As our highest priority remains the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, Florida State University has adopted a new calendar for the Spring 2021 semester.The semester will still begin Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, however, the first three days of classes will be taught remotely. The university has canceled Spring Break in 2021. FORT MYERS, Fla. —A man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to set a Planned Parenthood on fire in Fort Myers, Florida.The Lee County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that Everett Little was taken into custody after a search warrant was served at his home.The 20-year-old man is being charged with arson, criminal mischief, and using an incendiary device.Officers believe Little committed arson at the facility on Commerce Park Drive on Oct. 10.The act was caught on surveillance cameras and law enforcement distributed the photos of the suspect, asking the public for help locating him.In the end, authorities said they identified Little thanks to the community’s help."That act was caught on camera, and through Crime Stoppers, he's behind bars," said Sheriff Carmine Marceno in a statement on Facebook.
