NEWARK, N.J. - Before the holiday travel season picks up, United Airlines said they will be offering free coronavirus tests to passengers on select flights between New Jersey and the United Kingdom, beginning Nov. 16.According to a press release, the airline launched the 4-week pilot program that will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 11.United is only rapidly testing passengers flying between Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow, free of charge.United said appointments are required, and passengers will have to arrive three hours before their flight to get results back in time."We believe the ability to provide fast, same-day COVID-19 testing will play a vital role in safely reopening travel around the world and navigating quarantines and travel restrictions, particularly to key international destinations like London," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United in the news release. "Through this pilot program, we'll guarantee that everyone* onboard has tested negative for COVID-19, adding another element to our layered approach to safety. NEW YORK CITY — Fire marshals arrested a 36-year-old man accused of setting off fireworks that burned down a Brooklyn home last month, officials said Thursday.Officials said that the video shows Damien Bend igniting the illegal fireworks on June 24. Bend is charged with arson, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said."Illegal fireworks pose significant dangers to the safety of New Yorkers and their property," Nigro said. "Our Fire Marshals will continue to actively enforce the laws relating to illegal possession and sales of fireworks in New York City."Bend allegedly set off numerous fireworks, sending one of them through a window at around 9:25 p.m. last Friday night. Officials say he continued to light them, even as flames could be seen through the window of the 51st Street home.Video shows that one of the people with Bend appeared to be smoking a cigarette and filming himself as he shot off the fireworks.His friend, also filming himself, eventually noticed the house was burning at 9:32 p.m. — about seven minutes after the fire started.The video showed one of the men trying to contain the fire with a garden hose, to no avail."They were doing it in such a confined area it was just bound to happen," said FDNY Captain Michael Koco, director of safety education. "It was a recipe for disaster."The FDNY has set up one of a number of informational booths across the city to inform residents of the dangers of setting off fireworks, given the dramatic spike in complaints."A lot of times, the people that are being harmed are the bystanders," Koco said.In the last nine days, fire marshals in New York have arrested 17 people and confiscated nearly ,000 worth of illegal fireworks.It took 60 firefighters to knock down the blaze started by fireworks at 51st Street."They're illegal for a reason," Koco said. NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Gigi Martinez held tight to her daughter, sobbing in the doorway of the Dumont Rehabilitation Center in New Rochelle Thursday.It was the first time the 60-year-old mother and grandmother from Yonkers was seeing her family in the outside world since March 28 — four months ago — when she landed in Lawrence Hospital with COVID-19."This is a miracle," Martinez said.By early April, Martinez was intubated and put on a ventilator. She remained on the breathing machine for three months, even when she was transferred to Dumont at the beginning of July.After three days on the ventilator, Martinez said doctors were delivering a scary prognosis to her three daughters."Three doctors told them to 'let me go,' but they kept fighting for me," Martinez said.Many COVID-19 patients don't survive after being placed on a ventilator. Patients usually average just three weeks on the machines — far less than Martinez's three months.Martinez developed kidney failure, sepsis and heart failure along the way."The doctors gave her zero chances and told us to 'make arrangements,'" said Milagros Rivera, one of Martinez's three daughters. "I never thought I'd lose my mom to this. We're a prayerful family. We FaceTimed every night and prayed with her."Martinez was weaned off the ventilator in early July and looked frail as she was wheeled out of Dumont on Thursday."I'm a little bit tired, but I'm blessed and so thankful," Martinez said.Because she suffered kidney failure, doctors told Martinez's family that she would likely need to undergo dialysis treatments for the rest of her life.
