Final moments carry a weight.“I know in my heart he knew I was with him, and that was when I had to make the decision to tell him it was ok to let go, recalled Laurie Beaudette of her final moments with her father.“It was because I loved my dad so much and I didn’t want him to suffer.”Beaudette’s father, Jim Mandeville, was a veteran who served during the Korean War. He had most recently been living at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke in western Massachusetts."He was in the Soldiers' Home for over 16 years, made a lot of friends," Beaudette said.In April, she says her 83-year-old dad’s health quickly declined."The week before Easter, we were FaceTiming and he looked like a zombie, and he couldn’t respond to me," she recalled.On April 14, Jim Mandeville died after testing positive for COVID-19.“The cramped rooms, they had way too many beds,” she explained of her father’s living conditions. “Veterans roomed, they were definitely not social distanced.”The number of people at Soldiers' Home who have died from the virus stands at 76.“It was written up by 2010 by the VA for not having sufficient space between beds,” said Paul Barabani, who served as the facility’s superintendent from 2011 to 2016. “There wasn’t enough room to get by the bed, and the wall with a walker, wheelchairs were out of the question.”He says in 2012, he submitted a 6 million expansion and renovation plan to create more space, but the state never acted on it.“I often say, only if that they listened, if they had increased the staff, as well as renovating the building, the outcome may have been different," he said.Barabani is part of the Holyoke Soldiers' Home Coalition. The group is made up of former Soldiers' Home employees and family members of residents.The coalition is working is calling for better staffing, improved facilities, and other measures to make sure an outbreak doesn't happen again at the facility.In June, an independent investigation commissioned by the governor of Massachusetts said decisions made by the home’s leadership were “utterly baffling.”The report included a social worker’s quote, stating it “felt it was like moving the concentration camp—we [were] moving these unknowing veterans off to die.”The state’s secretary of veteran services subsequently resigned, and the home’s superintendent was fired.“What I would like to say to the state right now and to leaders and politicians is, make this right," said Cheryl Turgeon, whose father is living at the facility. "Make it right now, and don’t wait. There is no excuse for waiting, knowing what we do right now.”Gov. Charlie Baker released a plan in response to the report that includes million going towards infection control and a promise to add more staffing.Turgeon’s father is still inside Soldiers’ Home.“He’s going to be 90 in September, and I want to see him hit that milestone I want to see him make that 90th birthday," she said.Turgeon is part of the Holyoke Soldiers Home Coalition, and so is Cheryl Malandrinos.“My father-in-law was more than number 63, who died at the Soldier's Home," Malandrinos said.Malandrinos’ father-in-law served overseas and returned to spend decades as a public school teacher in western Massachusetts.She says in April his health declined over the course of a week.The Malandrinos family had to say the same goodbye tens of thousands of families have said nationwide. Many members of the family were not allowed inside the hospital and had to say goodbye through video chat.While the Holyoke Soldiers' Home Coalition and many others are pushing leaders to right the wrongs that lead to the outbreak to create a better future, for the families of the 76 lost lives, the mistakes, mismanagement, and this virus have left a forever mark.“For me, I’m the one who made the decision to put him in the Soldiers' Home. I’m the one who promised him he wouldn’t die alone. I have to live with that, and I have to get up every day and realize what I thought was a godsend for him, probably ended his life early,” Turgeon said. “And I could not fulfill the one promise that I made to him when I put him in there, because he did not want to go, so I have to deal with that every day.” 4198

Former "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw was on the defensive on Thursday after Variety Magazine published an interview with a former NBC correspondent claiming Brokaw sexually harassed her. Linda Vester, an NBC reporter for a decade from 1989 to 1999, told Variety that Brokaw physically tried to force her to kiss him and groped her on NBC property. She also claimed that Brokaw showed up to her hotel room uninvited. Variety confirmed that two of Vester's friends were told about Brokaw's alleged behavior around the time of the incidents. In response to the allegations, Brokaw sent a statement through NBC to Variety stating, "I met with Linda Vester on two occasions, both at her request, 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at NBC. The meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate, and despite Linda’s allegations, I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other.”There are also no other known claims of sexual harassment against Brokaw. Vester told Variety that recent events at NBC, including revelations of alleged sexual harassment involving ex-Today Show host Matt Lauer, have prompted her to speak out. Vester told Variety that the sexual advances began four years after she began her NBC career during Pope John Paul's 1993 visit to Denver. "I’m standing there, and Tom Brokaw enters through the door and grabs me from behind and proceeds to tickle me up and down my waist," she said. "I jumped a foot and I looked at a guy who was the senior editor of “Nightly,” and his jaw was hanging open. Nobody acted like anything wrong was happening, but I was humiliated. I didn’t know Brokaw other than to say hello in the hall."Vester said that she was also asked several times in 1994 to have drinks with Brokaw. Vester claimed that Brokaw also called her, saying he was coming over. Vester said that 30 minutes later, Brokaw was at her door. "He walked past me and sat down on the sofa in my suite," Vester told Variety. "He puts his arm on the back of the sofa and he said, 'I like our rat-a-tat-tat.' I thought it was a bizarre statement."Vester added, "I could feel myself trembling. As I stood there, I asked in a frustrated and scared tone, 'What do you want from me?' And he gave me a look of annoyance like he couldn’t believe I didn’t get it. He said, 'An affair of more than passing affection.'"Vester left NBC in 1999 to anchor a program for Fox News. FLORIDA — As many as 200 employees at the Lockheed Martin/Sikorsky facility in Jupiter, Florida could be affected by potential layoffs this summer.The workers union representing the employees -- Teamsters Local 1150 -- said they are doing everything they can to find people new positions within the company.Journalists at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida first heard about the likely layoffs from employees who reached out earlier this week and expressed concern about who would be on the chopping block.The layoffs involve workers in the Blackhawk military helicopter program, which shares space at the United Technologies facility off Beeline Highway in Jupiter. There are a total of 500 employees working there.No names or positions of who will be laid off have been finalized."This has been coming for a while," said Rocco Calo, a board member for Teamsters Local 1150 based in Connecticut. Sikorsky is also based in Connecticut.In a phone interview with WPTV on Wednesday, Calo said unfortunately, they're seeing a big downtown in military work for the Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters they build."In the Florida plant, they were working on Canadian maritime military helicopter program, which is dwindling down now, coming to an end," he said.Sikorsky is also seeing a decline in the number of aircraft the government is requesting to be built. The company operates on a multi-year contract with the government and Calo said with the current contract shows a significantly lower number of aircraft requests than in years past. The union is monitoring negotiations for future contracts."It's starting to look a little better for the out years, but nothing is signed yet. But we some irons in the fire, we're hopeful," said Calo.Sikorsky was bought by Lockheed Martin for billion in 2015, which could also be a contributing factor the changes the Sikorsky is undergoing right now."Naturally when you go through mergers and acquisitions, there are things that can happen with companies. They can either increase in terms of employees or they downsize," said Kelly Smallridge, president and CEO of the Palm Beach County Business Development Board.Her agency monitors and recruits businesses to establish operations in Palm Beach County."While we hate to see any company lay off employees in Palm Beach County, this is the time that other companies will be happily take any kind of skilled worker over to their operations," she said.Smallridge said there are 1,300 aerospace and engineering companies operating in this county alone and the BDB is on stand-by to assist any employees affected by the Sikorsky layoffs."We're ready to help place those employees in other operations. There are 67 corporate headquarters in Palm Beach County, so there's ample business opportunity," she said.Calo said Lockheed is still working on crunching numbers to determine the final number of layoffs. While employees feared the number would push 200, Calo said after factoring in early retirements and relocations for some positions, that number could be much lower."We had a significant number of people sign up for an early out package," he said.Some workers could be offered jobs at other locations in Connecticut and Alabama."I don't think we will be able to offset all of the involuntary stuff. It is a huge downturn in work, but as I said, we're fighting every day," said Calo.On Tuesday, Lockheed Martin released its 2018 first quarter results.The company reported net sales of .6 billion for the first quarter of the year, compared to .2 billion in the first quarter of 2017."Strong operational and program execution in the first quarter allowed us to increase our financial guidance for sales, profit and earnings per share," said Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO Marillyn Hewson, in the news release. "Our team remains dedicated to performing with excellence, offering affordable and innovative solutions for our customers, and delivering exceptional value to our shareholders."Under the Rotary and Missions systems report, which includes Sikorsky, the report states that net sales in the first quarter of 2018 increased million, or three percent, compared to the same period in 2017.However, the report goes on to say, "These increases were partially offset by a decrease of 0 million for Sikorsky helicopter programs due to lower volume for government helicopter programs."Teamsters Local 1150 is planning to hold a meeting with employees to discuss the layoffs this week. The union also represents workers at facilities in Alabama and Connecticut.Union leaders are even driving to Washington, D.C. this week to ask Congress for help.For layoffs of 50 or more people, WARN notices have to be filed with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.A search of the 2018 notices shows that Lockheed Martin filed a WARN notice for 82 layoffs at Hurlburt Field Air Force Base in Hurlburt Field, Florida. A notice has not yet been filed for the Jupiter facility. The company is required to give a 90-day notice to the state before laying people off.Lockheed Martin spokesman Paul Jackson released the following statement:  We have not made any announcements but continually review all our business operations to ensure we are properly sized for current and longer-term business requirements and economic conditions within our marketplaces. 5400

Many of them are feeling the same way.That burnout can feel heavier because many people are afraid to take vacation.A new survey from LinkedIn found nearly 70% of professionals don't plan to take time off through the end of the year or aren't sure if they will.More than half say they're afraid to travel because of the risks associated with COVID-19 and 22% want to save their vacation time in case they or a family member gets sick.Even for people planning to take vacation, a quarter say they feel more pressure at work to be always-on because of the current state of the economy.If you're looking for a job right now, expect to see more openings that let you work from anywhere.“Most employers that we're chatting with right now are very upfront of saying, ‘yes we're ok with remote right now, but ultimately we will want that person to be working in our facility or one of our facilities,’ and so you have to ask the question to be sure if you're interviewing with an employer of what does it look like in 12, 24 months who knows how long,” said Good.Experts at Robert Half say they expect to see more work-from-home jobs long-term, even after the pandemic. 1776

  

Five days after a gunman slaughtered 10 people at a Texas high school, teachers are returning Wednesday to the site of the massacre.Santa Fe High School teachers and staff are returning "to support each other and prepare for our students' return," said Leigh Wall, superintendent of the Santa Fe Independent School District.Students will return next Tuesday, Wall said. They'll have access to "counseling assistance from many state and local agencies" and will see additional law enforcement officers on campus, the superintendent said. 544
